2 AN INTRODUCTION TO THE FESTIVAL SOUNDBRIDGE 2015 SUPPORT MESSAGE FROM OUR PATRON YAM TUNKU ZAIN AL-'ABIDIN IBNI TUANKU MUHRIZ: "Once again, I'm pleased to support the Society of Malaysian Contemporary Composers SoundBridge Contemporary Music Festival. Malaysians with no prior interest in contemporary music are being stimulated as a result of previous SMCC performances, and I hope this year's festival will reach new audiences and further develop the talent of local composers." The Society of Malaysian Contemporary Composers (SMCC) and Studio C will be hosting the SMCC th st Contemporary Music Festival, SoundBridge 2015 with three concerts on October The three concerts will be held at the Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) s concert hall in Kuala Lumpur. In addition, there will also be three open rehearsals, composers workshops and a panel discussion. All these events will involve Malaysian composers from SMCC, as well as guest composers from Southeast Asia and international guest artists. The festival will feature many well-known local and international musicians and artists, including composer/conductor Chong Kee Yong (Malaysia), pianist Nicholas Ong (Malaysia), Chong Mei Ling (Malaysia), Chee Su Yen (Malaysia), baritone Mak Chi Hoe (Malaysia), soprano Ang Mei Foong (Malaysia), conductor Fam Qing Rui (Malaysia), guqin player Ng Teck Hing (Malaysia), live electronics performer Goh Lee Kwang (Malaysia), vocalist Kok Siew Wai (Malaysia), saxophonist Yong Yandsen (Malaysia), percussionist Bernard Goh (Malaysia), multi-instrumentalist Gideon Alubakhan Chen (Malaysia), Indian classical dance master Datuk Ramli Ibrahim (Malaysia), calligrapher Pang Heng Khan (Malaysia), flutist Daisuke Kino-Shita (Japan), violinist Saori Nakazawa (Japan), cellist Asep Hidayat (Indonesia), clarinetist Tsai Pei-Lun (Taiwan), percussionist Max Riefer (Germany), meta-sax performer Timothy O Dwyer (Australia), Thai traditional/live electronics performer Pradit Saengkrai, (Thailand), Javanese dancer Agung Gunawan (Indonesia), ASEAN Contemporary Music Ensemble (ACME-Malaysia section with Chinese & Western instruments), Sirius Quartet (Germany/Malaysia/New York), and many others. The primary objective of this festival is to foster a deep intercultural exchange between artists from Southeast Asia and beyond. Malaysia and Southeast Asian countries have blossoming avant-garde music scenes, and SMCC and Studio C aim to shed light on them by showcasing original compositions by composers from this region. Our guest artists will share their expertise with local audiences and emerging composers during the festival. In this festival, a group of young composers from this region will collaborate with the artists to bring interdisciplinary projects to fruition. Interdisciplinary art forms such as short films, digital images and other live performance will be featured. These young composers will also benefit from working with the festival ensemble and ultimately obtaining a professional video and audio recording of the performance of their piece. The invited guests will conduct a series of open rehearsals to engage with local music students and audience through various dialogues. At this juncture, I would like to express my deep appreciation to the many individuals and organisations who have contributed to the success of the festival, especially our SMCC patron Tunku Zain Al-'Abidin Ibni Tuanku Muhriz, colleagues from the Society of Malaysian Contemporary Composers and Studio C, Rolf Stehle from the Goethe-Institut (Malaysia), Dr. Chan Cheong-Jan and his team from UMP (Malaysia), Assoc.
