1 APPLIED LESSONS Clarinet Studio Moravian College Spring 2005 INSTRUCTOR: PHONE: Dr. Deborah E. Andrus (messages) PURPOSE To enable students develop the skills they need to be superior musicians and teachers through the study of technique, etudes, ensemble music and literature for the clarinet OBJECTIVES To increase clarinet performance skills that include, but are not limited to: physical skills (embouchure, sound, technique, breath support), visual and aural skills (pitch/rhythmic reading, sight-reading) and interpretive skills (connection of all skills into a cohesive performance of a etude, piece or excerpt) To become familiar with clarinet repertoire in all arenas (technical, etudes, lyrical, orchestral, solo, chamber) To understand clarinet pedagogy through all resources available (books, articles, music) To effectively perform as a member of a clarinet ensemble (trio, quartet, choir, etc.) To become familiar with outstanding recordings of clarinet performance Develop and apply appropriate remedies for performance anxiety To help the student to become an outstanding clarinetist, musician and teacher EXPECTATIONS Students will be fully prepared for and warmed up for each lesson All students will perform at least twice in public during each semester of study Music majors will practice a minimum of 14 hours per week for each weekly lesson Students will keep a notebook with their weekly lesson assignments and practice journal, which they will bring to each lesson Students will keep a folder for solo works, warm-ups, scale exercises and reed information Students will participate in a clarinet ensemble during each semester of study Students will write program notes for each piece worked on and/or performed during the semester Attendance at all clarinet student and faculty recitals is required of all students enrolled in lessons All students will take at least 2 major graded exams on their technique during each semester Students will purchase all literature, books, reeds and equipment for their lessons. Some examples of appropriate equipment include: a professional model clarinet such as Buffet, Yamaha, Leblanc or Selmer, a high-quality tuner such as a Korg AT-1 or Seiko 1100, a high quality metronome such as the Seiko DM-20, a mill bastard file, sandpaper (600 grit) and a high-quality reed case Students will purchase all music studied in lessons and used in performances, including juries Students will have at least four (4) reeds working at all times
2 ATTENDANCE Attendance at lessons and studio classes is mandatory. For each unexcused absence, the final lesson grade will be reduced by one letter. If the instructor is notified by telephone of extenuating circumstances 24 hours in advance, the lesson will be rescheduled. The student is responsible for rescheduling the lesson with the instructor. EVALUATION Grading Scale Weekly Lesson Grade (13) 1300 points A= points Midterm Exam 300 points B=80-89 Scale Jury 300 points C=70-79 Written Work 100 points D= /20=Final lesson grade F=below 60 **All students enrolled in private clarinet lessons will take a jury examination in front of the instrumental faculty at the end of each semester that will be averaged with their final lesson grade. The average of these two grades will be their final grade for the semester as follows: Final lesson grade 75% Jury exam grade 25% Final grade for the semester = 100% LESSON GRADES For a lesson grade of A: Student arrives early, lesson materials are fully prepared and are virtually flawless; student is performing ahead of chronological level; problem areas discussed in previous lessons are solved or significantly reduced; outstanding attitude and enthusiasm which exceeds the minimum expectations For a lesson grade of B: Student arrives on time, lesson materials are well-prepared with occasional flaws; at or ahead of chronological level; evidence of attention to problem areas discussed in previous lessons, attitude of passive cooperation and willingness to meet expectations For a lesson grade of C: Student is occasionally late; lesson materials partially prepared with numerous flaws; at or somewhat behind chronological level; partial evidence of attention to problems cited in previous lessons; attitude of submissive cooperation with occasional lapses in concentration during lesson For a grade of D: Student is frequently late; lesson materials remain largely unprepared; behind chronological level; little or no evidence of attention to problems cited at previous lessons; frequent lapses in concentration and begrudging willingness to learn

Andrus Moravian College Course of Study for Applied Clarinet Students Course Materials and Requirements for 1 st and 2 nd -year students (100 level) **Technical studies, etudes and solos will be chosen from the following lists as appropriate for the individual student s goals and abilities. The instructor may substitute appropriate solo and/or etude materials at any time. Generally, each student will prepare warm-up materials, scales, two contrasting etudes and a solo for each lesson.
