I also am confident this musical experience will enrich your students so they can realize and appreciate the vast role orchestral music plays in our daily lives and the joy music brings to each one of us! Yours in music, Norman Gamboa Music Director/Conductor Aurora Symphony Orchestra

Previously, he served as music director of the Powder River Symphony Orchestra in Wyoming, director of orchestral studies at Washburn University and cover conductor of the Topeka Symphony Orchestra in Kansas, associate conductor of the Las Vegas Music Festival, as well as assistant conductor of the Waco Symphony and music director of the Waco Symphony Youth Orchestra in Texas. Norman Gamboa was born in Costa Rica and now makes his home in Aurora, Colorado. THE CONDUCTOR DOWN AND FRONT In France, the title of conductor is translated as chef d orchestre. In many ways a conductor is like a talented chef who makes everything taste or sound better by blending correct amounts of the right ingredients together at the right time. Small groups of musicians can play together by relying on their own teamwork, but a large symphony orchestra of 55 or more players needs a leader the conductor! Back in the 17 th century a large stick, like a cane, was sometimes used to beat time. This was clumsy and made a lot of noise; it was also sometimes dangerous. A French composer named Lully once hit his foot while conducting with a large cane. His foot became infected and he died! In the 18 th century the leader of the violins would sometimes use his bow to beat time. Sometimes the person playing the harpsichord with the orchestra would beat time by nodding his head, or by waving one arm. When the orchestra got bigger in the 19 th century, it was necessary to have a leader stand in the front where all of the players could see. This person did not play in the orchestra; his job was to conduct. At first he used a violin bow to conduct, and then a heavy rod. Now conductors use a light wooden stick, usually painted white, which is called baton. The conductor has three main jobs: choosing a well-balanced and interesting program, interpreting the composer s intentions, and rehearsing the orchestra. This means that the conductor always studies the musical score in advance, and often memorizes all of the compositions on a program. The conductor tries to guide the orchestra so that they play the music the way the composer intended it. S/he is in charge of how fast or slow the orchestra plays, how loud or soft each of the sections plays, and s/he also gives directions to different instruments when they have an important part.

11 Mr. Luis Diego Herra World Happenings in the 1950s Rosa Parks incites the Montgomery bus boycott in The Soviets launch Sputnik in 1957 and thus the space race begins. The NBC western Bonanza becomes the first TV show to be broadcasted in color. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is created. Today we are also facing a time of important happenings in the world. How many changes have you seen so far in your life? Home Life Luis Diego Herra was born on January 23 in the Central American country of Costa Rica. As a kid, together with his schoolmates, he used to put frogs inside horns and tubas; at one time, he even tried to fit head first inside a tuba he had borrowed from another student who was practicing, not because we wanted to see if there were any frogs inside, but because he wanted to unravel the mystery of music. Mr. Herra is not only an accomplished composer, he is also a very important orchestra conductor. Studies As a child, Herra began studying trumpet at the Conservatorio de Castella, a high school for the performing and visual arts in Costa Rica. A few years later he was accepted at the University of Costa Rica as a mathematics major and shortly after he resumed his music studies, this time in orchestral conducting and composition. In 1978 he enrolled at the Conservatoire National de Région de Strasbourg in France where he won the first medal in the orchestral conducting competition in He also attended l'académie Internationale d'été de Nice and also the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris. Later, Herra returned to his country to teach conducting and composition at the University of Costa Rica. Herra s compositions have been performed many times in important cities in Costa Rica and in other countries, including the United States, Mexico, El Salvador, Panama, Brazil, China and Poland. He has also received many distinguished recognitions and prestigious awards. Herra s music style The music of Luis Diego Herra is very cool and original, he always likes to combine conventional formulas and traditional harmonies with many exotic elements found in Latin American popular music.

12 The Marimba The marimba is a percussion instrument consisting of a set of wooden bars struck with mallets to produce musical tones. Resonators suspended underneath the bars amplify their sound. The bars of a chromatic marimba are arranged like the keys of a piano. The marimba is a relative of the xylophone, but more resonant and with a deeper sound. The marimba was developed in the African country of Zimbabwe, it is a traditional instrument whose name means song made by hitting boards. The modern version of the marimba has many uses, including solo performances, woodwind and brass ensembles, marimba concertos, jazz ensembles, marching band, concert band and orchestral compositions. Contemporary composers have used the unique sound of the marimba more and more in recent years. A player of the marimba can be called a marimbist or a marimba player. Color and then help the marimba find its mallets

13 Mr. Herbert Owen Reed Humble Beginnings Herbert Owen Reed grew-up in rural Odessa, Missouri, where his first exposure to music was his father's playing of the oldtime fiddle and accompanied by his mother at the piano. Reed was also attracted to the popular piano music of the 1920s which included many novelty piano tunes as well as his family's self-playing piano. He studied piano with Odessa's only piano teacher, Mrs. Felts, who attempted to interest him in the music of Bach and Beethoven. In 1937 he enrolled at the famous Eastman School of Music where he studied composition, conducting, music history, and music theory, graduating in Later he continued studying advanced composition with important American composers such as Aaron Copland and Leonard Bernstein. In the summer of 1947, he attended composition lessons with renowned composer Arnold Schoenberg. Reed s music style Herbert Owen Reed enjoyed investigating the traditional music of North America, using its sounds as inspirations for his own original compositions. Many of his pieces feature material derived from the Mexican, Native American, Anglo-American and African American cultures, blended with contemporary idioms. He also wrote music in a variety of genres, and has especially made an impact in the concert band world, where several of his compositions are often performed. La Fiesta Mexicana Mexican people are very proud of their religious heritage and they express their love and honor for the Virgin of Guadalupe. They express their devotion with a Mexican fiesta, which is it is serious and comical, festive and solemn, fervent and pagan, noisy and tender. Reed came to write La Fiesta Mexicana after studying six months in Mexico between 1948 and While there, he heard lots of different types of Mexican music from the many different cultures that make up the country s heritage, including Aztec, Roman Catholic, and of course mariachi music. He used these various ideas for his own compositions and very often inserted elements with the same flavor, he then stitched them all together with ideas of his own contemporary style. La Fiesta Mexicana s three movements or sections. I. Prelude and Aztec Dance The sound of the church bells and the noise of fireworks announce the beginning of the fiesta. People from all places come the old cathedral some on foot, some by burro. After a while, celebrations settle down until the church bells and fireworks again interrupt the silence of the Mexican morning. At midday a parade is announced by trumpets and a band is heard in the distance. Aztec dancers brilliantly dance in complete frenzy.

14 II. Mass The ringing of the bells is now a reminder to all that the fiesta is, after all, a religious celebration. Everyone gathers inside the old cathedral for contemplation and worship. III. Carnival Mexico is at its best on the days of the fiesta, a day on which passion rules above all. There is entertainment for both young and old the traveling circus, the market, the bull fight, the town band, and always the cantinas with their festive mariachis. LET S GO TO MEXICO! 16 Mexican Bird Rattle Craft In Mexico, paper mache rattles are very popular during celebrations. These rattles are shaken to welcome generous spirits and to drive away the unhappy spirits of the past. There are two ways of making a beautiful rattle, a template version and a paper mache version. The template version is a lot quicker and the paper mache version is more "traditional". Materials: toilet paper roll or cardboard tube, popsicle stick masking tape small rocks, dry beans or unpopped popcorn. Printer and paper scissors, something to color with, glue Instructions: Cover one end of the toilet paper roll with masking tape. Place a small circle of paper and taped it over the toilet paper tube to keep the "rattle" materials from sticking to the masking tape. Insert the popsicle stick inside the other end of the toilet paper roll and tape it on firmly -- tape it lots! (For an extra firm handle, tape one popsicle stick inside the toilet paper roll and tape a second popsicle stick overlapping the first on the outside of the toilet paper roll. Then wrap some tape around the two sticks to make them into one stick. You'll be able to glue the template pieces overtop of all this). Put some rocks, beans or popcorn inside the toilet paper roll and cover the other end with masking tape. Print out the craft template of choice. Color (if using the black and white version of the craft) and cut out the template pieces. Glue the large rectangular piece on first to cover the tube. Toilet paper rolls come in different sizes, so if you find the rectangle is a bit too big, just trim it down. If you find it's a bit too small, just cut out another small piece to fill in the gap. Glue the smaller rectangle along the bottom of the toilet paper roll. Fold the beak template piece in half and on the dotted line and glue to the center of the bird's head. Glue the eyes onto the face and the feathers onto the top of the head.
