Chair: Roy Tankersley, 51 Roy St, Palmerston North. Ph: Secretary: Joanna Love. 13 Tasman Views, Whanganui. Ph: MANAWATU - WHANGANUI REGION Newsletter: Guy Donaldson, 4 Monaco Grove, Palmerston North. Ph: donaldson.guy@gmail.com April 2018 Newsletter A note from the Chair At our first committee meeting of the year we were delighted to have Grant Hutchinson NZCF Chief Executive with us. He appreciated being able to hear firsthand of our activities. It was exciting to hear about the International Choral Symposium taking place being in Auckland in July We all need to put this in our diaries now!!! To have such a significant event on our doorstep is an opportunity not to be missed. We look forward to seeing you all at the SingFest (7 th April) with Joe Christensen from Hawkes Bay as our guest conductor and commentator and our Workshop and AGM (12 th May) with Isaac Stone. Both the Big Sing (13 th June) and the Kids Sing (14 th August) are regular fixtures in our region. Do attend these events and be inspired by the energy and enthusiasm of young voices. These are the singers of tomorrow, so our support as helpers and audience will go a long way to encouraging them to become singers for life. In January we were able to hear the New Zealand Secondary Student s Choir in concert with many members from our region and we wish them well as they travel to Beijing and Hong Kong in July. May we all get to the very heart of the words we are singing enhanced by melodies that will delight us and our audiences! Happy Musicking Roy Tankersley CHOIR NEWS FOXTON/RONGOTEA COMBINED CHURCHES CHOIR Pauline Rowe - Music Director It is always exciting when there are new people wanting to try their voices out for a choir. Not that the Foxton/Rongotea Combined Churches Choir auditions anyone, as it is an all-comers choir, and the majority of them don t read music. It can be a challenge, but what matters is the end result of seeing what a difference the year has made to each member, and their ability to enjoy the music and perform it to so many different groups. From the end of September through to November, and one last month (February), the Choir was able to bring many blessings to 10 different audiences around Foxton, Rongotea, Levin, Palmerston North, Feilding and Bulls. Classic Hits proved to be a very popular title choice for the Choir s collection of songs. Come 2018, and again it is a joy to have some more new voices to work with under the title What s in a Name?

UNITY SINGERS Palmerston North Stephen Fisher Music Director Unity Singers was formed in 1969 as a community choir with the objective to provide singing pleasure for club members and to the public in an atmosphere of friendliness and conviviality. Performances over the last 49 years have been both public and private, and held at retirement homes, service clubs and similar organizations in the Manawatu, Horowhenua, Rangitikei and Tararua districts. The Choir is also available to sing at weddings. An annual variety concert is held at the Regent on Broadway, Palmerston North on Sunday 10 th June starting at 1.30pm, and this year the theme will be Our World. The Choir has in recent years also performed an increasingly popular annual Carols in the Cathedral at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit. This year the date is set for Tuesday 4 th December starting at 7pm. Admission is by donation or an item of non-perishable food for the St Vincent de Paul foodbank. For most of the years that the Choir has been performing Helen O Connor has been the Music Director assisted by pianist Margaret Davis, and the continued success of the Choir is largely owing to their input. This year the concerts will be under the baton of Stephen Fisher, as Helen has currently stepped aside because of ill health. The Choir is also looking for a pianist to help out at rehearsals twice a month, and are of course always open to new members (particularly men). Practices are held on Tuesday nights at St Mary s Hall on Ruahine Street. CAMERATA Palmerston North Alison Stewart Music Director In September of 2017 the Camerata women s choir celebrated its twentieth birthday with a concert at St Peter s Church. The programme of favourites showcased their vast and varied repertoire. In October the Choir joined the New Zealand Male Choir for both a Palmerston North and a Feilding concert, performing separately and together. The Christmas season saw it performing at Downtown, and the Palmerston North and Feilding Libraries. Their first engagement this year is on Good Friday when it will sing with the St Peter s and All Saints choirs at St Peter s Church. RENAISSANCE SINGERS Palmerston North Guy Donaldson Music Director The Choir s first public performance was on Wednesday May 24 in the Molly Atkinson Ladies Choral Festival at St Peters Church. Jenny Boyack s report thanked the women of the choir for their stylish and secure singing. The first major concert for the year was on Saturday June 24, and had a theme of Into the Light. The Choir purposefully chose repertoire that had a mixture of extending music and lighter music. The Renaissance Singers contributed the opening bracket for the Musica Viva September concert at Square Edge with material being prepared for the Choral Proms relating to the theme of Flora and Fauna. New Renaissance Singers member Christine Archer Lockwood provided stylistic support at the piano for the singing of the good proportion of the Choir who were able to be there. On Tuesday September 5 Oxford Choral director Janet Lince took the choir for a workshop focusing on choral blending amongst other things. Janet reported that she thoroughly enjoyed the work with the Choir.

Guy Fawkes Day was the chosen date when the Choir presented A Choral Proms Concert to a packed Speirs Centre, with the principal work being Orff s Carmina Burana. The Choir was blessed with soloists Shayna Tweed and Roger Wilson, and pianists Christine Archer-Lockwood and Jonathan Berkahn, along with four percussionists. But the Choir itself rose to the occasion to present a vital and exciting performance which according to critic Stephen Fisher enthralled the audience, and also managed even to sustain the energy for a second half of lighter numbers and Proms favourites. On Saturday December 16 many of the Choir contributed to a double bill of traditional carols, firstly at Pepper Tree at 7pm, and then from 8.40pm with members of the PNCS and other choirs for the closing act in the City s Christmas in the Square. And then they were back at Julia Wallace on Monday December 18 for more carols, some Rodgers and Hammerstein and a Hallelujah Chorus. The first public appearance for 2018 will be for the Choral SingFest at St Peters on Saturday April 7. Meantime, they are in solid preparation for a joint venture with the Kapiti Choir in Paraparaumu. Eric Sidoti will be conducting the combined choirs with soloists and orchestra in Dvorak s great Easter work, Stabat Mater on Sunday April 15 at 2pm. There will be a repeat performance at St Peters on Sunday May 20 with organ featuring the same line-up of soloists, and with the Renaissance Singers probably augmented by some members of the Kapiti Choir with Guy Donaldson conducting that performance. The climax to the year will be a performance on Saturday November 10 in the Regent on Broadway with Whanganui s Schola Sacra and the Manawatu Sinfonia. The featured work will be Samuel Arnold s Hymn of Adam and Eve. From 1777 Samuel Arnold was composer and music director of the Haymarket Theatre Royal in London, and his works enjoyed critical acclaim and popular success in his lifetime. The Hymn of Adam and Eve was influenced and inspired particularly by Haydn s oratorio Creation, which Arnold conducted in In October 1802, only months after completing the work, he died and was buried in Westminster Abbey. The planned performances were cancelled, and the work has yet to receive a performance anywhere in the world. Palmerston North academic Professor Robert Hoskins is a world authority on the music of Samuel Arnold and was responsible for the editing of the published score of The Hymn of Adam and Eve. The concert will begin with Haydn Creation Part Three which is concerned with Adam and Eve. The Choir has secured one of the very few singers in the country who is capable of singing the coloratura role of Eve, Pasquale Orchard. Lindsay Yeo will partner Pasquale in both works as Adam to her Eve. PALMERSTON NORTH CHORAL SOCIETY Music Director Alison Stewart 2017 was a three-concert year for the Palmerston North Choral Society. On 17 September, 2017 the Choir presented their second concert in the Massey University Sir Geoffrey Peren Auditorium. This was a short programme - John Rutter s The Sprig of Thyme with supporting instrumental soloists, and was combined with a High Tea, which the choristers catered. This different approach to staging a concert was very well received by the audience and enjoyed by the choristers, who nicknamed the event High Tea with free concert on the side. The end of year concert was Handel s Messiah, performed to a full house at the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit on December 2, A chamber orchestra led by Allan Rae accompanied, with support from Stephen Rowley as harpsichord continuo and Clyde Dixon on trumpet. Soloists were Janey MacKenzie (soprano), Ellen Barrett (contralto), John Beaglehole (tenor) and David Morriss (bass).

2018 is commencing with the SingFest on April 7 th at St Peter s Church. The first major concert for the year is to be held on July 7 th 2018, also at St Peter s Church, and will feature the 2008 Howard Goodall Eternal Light Requiem, a stunning work that has only been presented twice in New Zealand to date. The remainder of the programme is a suite of four works by Auckland composer David Hamilton that were composed as a Remembrance Suite for the Centenary of World War I. The works are A Lament, A Call to Arms, In Flanders Fields, and Suicide in the Trenches. The end of year concert is to be held on December 1 st 2018, the programme being Jenkins Stella Natalis, along with Britten s Ceremony of Carols. This will also be performed in St Peter s Church. ALL SAINTS ANGLICAN CHOIR Palmerston North Music Director Jenny Hornblow All Saints Choir s primary purpose is to support the worship at the weekly 5pm service, most Sundays based on the New Zealand Prayer Book Evening Worship service, and on the third Sunday of the month a service of Holy Communion. The Choir continues to maintain a very stable membership and is always happy to welcome new members. Tuneful singing is a pre-requisite and music reading skills are helpful given the wide repertoire and quick turnaround of music in a church choir. The second part of 2017 involved a settling-in process as the Choir moved back to the Community Centre at the rear of All Saints following the closure of St Andrew s Presbyterian Church for earthquake strengthening. Although it is wonderful to be a step closer to returning to our beautiful and historic brick church, the Choir has had to adjust to a very challenging acoustic in the community centre. Selwyn Jebson, a former choir member, has loaned a small organ with two manuals and a pedal board and that has been greatly appreciated. Experimentation continues with choir placement in the space and repertoire needs to be able to maximize sound and support for both choir and congregational singing. It was fortunate that the traditional Christmas Lessons and Carol service was able to be held at St Peter s Church with members of their choir swelling the ranks. The Choir also contributed to the Christmas Midnight Service in the All Saints Community Centre, once again, an exercise in working out how to get the best choral sound in the difficult space. The Christmas season also meant carol singing to older parishioners and friends, and for the All Saints Living Crib and Christmas Lights display. The All Saints Choir is under way with their 2018 services and preparing music for the Easter season. Once again, the acoustic difficulties of the Community Centre mean that they won t offer their usual Good Friday Service of Reflection but will instead join Camerata and St Peter s Choir at the 10am St Peter s service. The NZ Choral Federation Singfest is a wonderful opportunity for us to revisit our Easter repertoire. There will be a Taize Service sometime in the winter the gentleness of the music, candles and flowers and readings is restful and refreshing but otherwise the Choir will continue with its regular pattern of services with hymn singing, different music settings of the psalms and a wide range of choral offerings from the choir. People are always welcome to join the service on a Sunday at 5pm.

MANAWATU OVERTONES CHORUS Palmerston North Co-Directors: Sylvia Fountain & Liz Watts There was a great start to the year with a Retreat in Masterton. Most members attended this fabulous weekend of coaching by one of the top directors in Australasia Virginia Humphrey-Taylor from Christchurch City Chorus. This coaching is providing a base for continued learning and growing in barbershop singing. For the third year in a row the Chorus is competing at the Sweet Adelines National Convention being held in Wellington on May 3 to May 6. Their two competitions songs are the uptake Never Say Never and the ballad How Deep is the Ocean. They have also had weekend coaching in February with Nicky McCaughan (from Christchurch) and are all looking forward to hosting the international coach Lea Beverley on the weekend of April 7-9. This unfortunately means they will miss the SingFest. The Chorus is very pleased that their co-directors have both completed their directors certificate programme which has involved quite a bit of study and sitting of tests. Attendance at Tuesday night rehearsals in the Scottish Society hall has been in the mid 20s out of a possible 31, which is pleasing as the quest towards improvement continues. After the Convention there will be an opportunity to add to the repertoire of new songs and revitalize songs learned last year which will be part of concert programmes in the near future. MANAWATUNES Palmerston North Music Director - Stuart Johansen For any men who are interested in singing a cappella, then this group is certainly an option. The current repertoire ranges from a (very) few true barbershop songs from around the early 1900 s, songs from the 70's (e.g. Queen, Billy Joel, Glen Campbell), one or two home grown songs (Dave Dobbin), a couple of choral a cappella and a number of children s movie theme tunes, all in the barbershop style. A number of the Manawatunes joined the Harbour Capital Chorus at the Pan Pacific competitions in Sydney towards the end of last year and the Chorus placed second in the NZ competition and one of quartets (Soundcheck) was placed fifth in the NZ contingent. It s not all hard competition work though. The Music & Magic show mid year attracted many children and their grandparents; and the Chorus has had a number of lighthearted and fun sing-outs to smaller audiences. In the month leading up to Christmas it entertained many elderly folk in rest homes. The quartet Soundcheck did a great job in serenading a woman on More FM recently - a Valentines Day prize from her partner - lots of fun indeed. The Manawatunes main annual show has been a great success in the past and this years show is booked for 15th July. It s usually a full house at the Speirs Centre. There will be some fantastic musical items from guests including up and coming local music talent. If harmony singing is something you might be interested in, what ever your age, you are most welcome to drop by and have a listen at the Red Cross Centre at 7:30 on Wednesday nights. ARCADIAN SINGERS - Taihape Music Director Helen Gordon The Arcadian Singers had the pleasure of hosting a memorable combined concert with Wanganui Male Choir in July Charlotte Oswald sang the solo in the Arcadian s performance of From

Away - a commissioned work by David Hamilton. The Male choir impressed with traditional Maori numbers and extracts from Les Miserables. Combined items included Cohen s Hallelujah, Robat Arwyn s Benedictus and R Lee Gillan s arrangement of My Lord What a Mornin. On a sad note, the Arcadians also sang with the Male Choir and members of the NZ Male Choir at Dave Spier s funeral in December. In October there was a return visit from David Dell and the Wellington Take Note Singers. The varied programme of popular music and sing-alongs was a crowd pleaser. David Dell sang some New Zealand songs and told their fascinating history. Additional verses had been added to the Gumboot Song as a tribute to the late John Clarke. The Arcadians sang carols with a full church of Waimarino folk and presented other Christmas pieces at St Joseph s Church, Ohakune on December 10. That uplifting service was followed by singing at local Community Carol Service in Taihape a few days later. The Arcadians are currently working towards a concert in Taihape on May 20 th with St Andrew s Church Choir from Taupo. This choir is directed by Susie Hunter. The concert will feature Hear my Prayer by Mendelsohn with soloist Cruize-Pomare Karauti-Fox (counter tenor). The Arcadians will present a selection of British Songs. LYRIC SINGERS - Whanganui Music Director Joanna Love The mid-year concert in June was De Lovely Things, at Christ Church, Wicksteed Street. Guest artists were Leonard Cave, organist and a Brass Whanganui Ensemble. Rest home concerts took place on Saturday 22 July at Masonic and Summerset homes. The Singers also participated in the Voices for Hospice concert at Central Baptist Church on 28 October. The Choir s end of year concert Sing for Joy was held on Saturday 25 November at St Mary s, Guyton Street. Guest artists were Elin Tomos, a Welsh mezzo-soprano, who received a standing ovation, and Airini Beautrais, a local poet, who read selected poems from her latest anthology, Flow. This was a charity concert and the Choir gave a donation of $1,200 to Singing for your brain, an organisation that brings together people with brain injuries, including those who have suffered strokes. Joanna Love is now in her fourth year of conducting the choir, with Lisa Boessenkool, accompanist, now in her ninth year of accompanying the choir. Membership sits at around 40 members, with 20 local businesses supporting the choir through sponsorship. The programme for 2018 looks like this so far: Saturday, 7 April, SingFest, Palmerston North Saturday, 12 May, NZCF AGM and workshop, St Stephen s Church Hall, Marton. Saturday, 16 June, mid-year concert, Trinity Methodist Church, Whanganui Saturday 29 September, Joint Choirs, WW1 concert, Central Baptist Church, Whanganui Saturday, 24 November, end of year concert, Christ Church, Whanganui

WANGANUI MALE CHOIR Music Director: Margaret Thompson 2017 was a busy year for the Wanganui Male Choir! In addition to its regular concerts in June and December, the Choir travelled to sing with the Acardian Singers in Taihape, the Wellington Male Voice Choir in Wellington, and joined with the Central Band of the Salvation Army at the Levin Citadel. The big event for 2017 was a tour of Australia [Melbourne, Geelong, Hobart & Sydney] by choir members, augmented by several choristers from the New Zealand Male Choir. The touring choir had good audiences and received enthusiastic receptions. Choir membership in 2017 was twenty eight choristers, along with Margaret Thompson as the new music director and Caitlin Arthur as the new accompanist. The two women successfully continued to match the high standards set by their predecessors from previous years. The Choir s first concert on 1 st July 2018 is titled Choruses from the Operas and Shows. The Choir will be singing the Gendarmes Chorus, Huntsmen s Chorus, La Donna E Mobile, Pilgrim s Chorus and Soldiers Chorus. From the shows we will include All I Need Is The Girl from Gypsy, Hey Look Me Over from Wildcat, Ol man River, from Showboat, and Seize The Day from Newsies. The guest artist will be Cecily Shaw, a mezzo soprano and award winning student from the Opera School Week held in Whanganui in January this year. She will be singing several arias from various operas. The Choir will also be performing two items with Cecily possibly the Gypsy Chorus and one other to be determined. At the end of September the Choir, along with Schola Sacra, Lyric Singers, Community Choir, St Stephens Marton, Arcadian Singers Taihape will be performing a joint concert commemorating the end of hostilities for World War 1 Peace at Last. The Wanganui Male Choir will be performing Beautiful Soldier and In Flanders Field. The end of year concert #272 will be titled All About Men from birth to death, - men in song, and will be held on Sunday 9 th December This concert will be a 120 th Jubilee Concert and the Choir hopes to sing as its opening song A Wet Sheet and A Flowing Sea, which was the opening song from the very first concert on 22 nd September years ago. SCHOLA SACRA CHOIR AND YOUTH CHORUS - Whanganui Music Director Roy Tankersley 2017 started with a rush and a roar into the first performance date of Saturday 8 April at Christ Church Anglican in Whanganui with From Darkness to Light with memorable readings from John Peill and Meg Hartfield. A wide variety of Easter music presented by both choirs finished with a lusty performance of The Strife is o er, the battle won by Henry J Ley accompanied by organ. On 1 July the Adult Choir took over Lynne Loader s home for a very successful and enjoyable Soiree and Lynne, Patron of the choir, was an amazing hostess.

On August 12 th at Christ Church, Whanganui the choirs presented Between Two Worlds which featured a work commissioned in 2015 by the Renaissance Singers. This was An Anniversary Mass by Palmerston North composer Graham Parsons with soloists Ellen Barrett, Nigel Tongs, Lindsay Yeo and Jonathan Berkahn on the organ. The first half featured a variety of items from both choirs with the Youth Chorus singing New Zealand songs. On Sunday 17 th September the adult choir rendered a variety of songs from spirituals through to Beatles as a fundraiser for and at the Sargeant on the Quay. On 28 th October both choirs contributed to the Hospice Concert with other local choirs. The Youth Chorus held a concert on 21 November, and on 25 November Schola Sacra held its first ever Flash Mob at the Market. It was a huge success and lots of fun. In the afternoon the Choir hosted a Friends of the Choir afternoon tea and a short performance of some items from the up and coming Christmas Concert From Pole to Pole held on 2 nd December at Christ Church. The large audience was so receptive and supportive, offering generous applause and singing with great gusto in the massed singing! Traditional Christmas carols are fast disappearing and there is a ready audience out there longing to celebrate Christmas with them. On 10 February 2018 the Youth Chorus held a workshop followed by a short concert for the adult choir and friends. On 24 March the adult choir also held a workshop which finished with a short concert for the friends of the choir of the items to be sung at the SingFest on 7 April. A concert on 19 th May With cheerful voice will feature anthems and Schubert s Mass in G. On 29 September Schola will join other Wanganui choirs for a Remembrance Concert for the World Wars. On Saturday 10 November in the Regent On Broadway Schola will combine with the Renaissance Singers to present the World Premiere of Samuel Arnold s The Hymn of Adam and Eve preceded by Part Three of Creation by Haydn. There is a fabulous line up of soloists accompanied by the Manawatu Sinfonia, conducted by Guy Donaldson and supported by a grant from the Earle Creativity Trust. On 8 December SING NOEL will see both choirs presenting a programme of carols including audience participation with the Youth Chorus in theatrical mode with folk songs and dance.
