Put right hand under mouth and feel warm air coming out. 2. Cold air means student is blowing too hard. Step Two: Hand Position 1. Left hand on top. Right hand on bottom. 2. Right hand has nothing to do. Find a neutral place hold on. Step Three: Tonguing 1. Begin each sound with a soft doot. 2. Echo beat rhythms with the tongue. NO RECORDERS YET! 3. Use rhythm of above poem as tonguing exercise.. Don t ask students to concentrate on fingering at this point. Step Four: Fingering 1. Have each student use right arm as recorder. 2. Start at wrist and paint three dots on outer arm. One dot on the back represents thumbhole. 3. Make a fist with right hand and place under chin.. Place fingers of left hand over painted holes and thumb on back. 5. Practice fingering. Student imitates teacher. 6. Use imitation recorder: a dowel with four painted holes. 7. Students practice the above ways before passing out recorders. 8. Make B impossible to miss. Put two stickers on first and thumbholes for every recorder.
