2 ***A MESSAGE FROM BAND DIRECTORS*** Mr. Porfirio Mendez Jr., Mr. Eli Lopez, Mr. Robert Salazar III, Mr. Leonel Barrera, and Mr. Roberto Alvarez Jr. Welcome to the Marching Band Season. You are now a member of the most successful student organization on our campus. Congratulations on being part of the most exciting, hardworking, cutting edge 4-A band in South Texas. We are planning to compete at several marching contests and have already acquired the music and the drill for next year s show. The music is Uprising. Summer Band will start on Monday July 31 st for all marching band members. Please report to the H.M. King High School Band Hall at your assigned time. Summer Band will end on Friday, August 25 th. See the attached detailed schedule. Summer Band is mandatory for all band students. Please work out your vacation schedules around our marching band schedule. We want you to have the experience of a lifetime during this marching season. All students and parents are encouraged to check our Facebook page for announcements. A copy of this letter will be posted on Facebook. Instruments: We do not want any personally owned instruments left in the band hall in May. Please make arrangements to come take your instrument home so that you can practice. We are not liable for these instruments. Have your instrument serviced or well-oiled and greased this summer. If you do not have an instrument, see a director at the King High School Band Hall on June 5 th and 6 th (8am-11:30am) (1pm-4pm). We have a few more school-owned instruments in stock. If you plan on buying a new instrument come by the band hall and speak to a band director so that you can get some advice as to which model is best for you. Uniforms: The school will provide your uniform jacket, trousers, and hat. You must provide your own black rolled heal (MTX marching band shoes). Tennis shoes will not be acceptable for performances. Black cotton gloves and black socks are also required. These items can be obtained at the local music dealer or department stores. Students will not be allowed to take the uniforms home. They will be checked out before every performance and turned in after every performance. There will be a band fee of $95 ($75 for uniform cleaning and $20 for the band T-shirt). Band parents and former students may order their shirts through the Band Booster Club. This money will be due by August 10 th. Dress Code for Summer Band: T-shirts, shorts, and tennis shoes are recommended for practice sessions. High top basketball shoes are not ideal because they do not allow the ankles to move freely as required in our marching. Hats and caps may be worn outdoors only. Sandals or flip flops are not allowed on the practice field. Please use sunscreen and bring a water bottle with you to practice. Attention Band Parents!!! We have a very active Booster Club. We would like to encourage all of our parents to join in the fun. We will definitely need your help. Our success depends greatly on your parental support. The next booster meeting will be on Monday, August 7, 2017, at 6:00 p.m. in the Band Hall at H.M. King H.S. We will need to get organized to help with summer band practices. Private Lessons: I would like to encourage all of our students to attend the TAMUK Summer Band Camp. It starts on June 14 and goes through, June 18. Applications are available online or at the TAMUK music building. There are many fine musicians in the area and we can most certainly help find one for you!
