The museum as a chance, inspiration and threat to the preservation of Polish bagpipe traditions Janusz Jaskulski, Museum of Musical Instruments, National Museum of Poznań Erasmus + PROJECT TITLE: EUROPEAN BAGPIPE EDUCATIONAL FORUM building EU methodology for preservation, playing and building of traditional bagpipe instruments PROJECT ACRONYM: European bagpipe educational forum Applicant organisation: Centre of Croatian traditional instruments, HR Partners: Orava Cultral Centre, SK / Muziekpublique, BE / Pluribus Unum, PL 3th transnational project meeting Juni 2016 Poznań i Region Kozła/POLAND
1) Zdzisław Szulc founder of the Museum of Musical Instruments ( ) collects instruments (including the Wielkopolska bagpipes), preserves the exhibits (e.g. catalogues, exhibitions, concerts), publishes the Dictionary of Polish Violin Makers and coorganizes the Violin-Makers Competition and the Association of Polish Folk Musicians Włodzimierz Kamiński ( ) continues in Szulc s footsteps, expands internationally Janusz Jaskulski (1988 -) - inspired by Szulc and Kamiński, begins to work with the section of European and non-european folk instruments, focusing on the bagpipes
2/. Bagpipes in need, or a/. the Wielkopolska Meetings of Bagpipe Makers / / - as a reference to the Polish Confrontations of Pipe Bands in Poznań, held in ; - cyclical, 3-days initiatives in the subregions of Wielkopolska in the form of public presentations of bagpipemaking techniques (master-student), exhibitions based on local collections and archives, concerts and a bagpipe annual Duda i Kozieł (6 editions, ) b/. goat bagpipe-making workshops (program and organization) Nądnia , two stages, in collaboration with NGOs
3 c/. participation of the Museum in compiling a nationwide program of the School of Master Folk Instrument Makers, together with the Institute of Music and Dance, Warsaw 2012 third edition of the program (bagpipes and bladder pipes / Platerspiel, kozioł, mazanki)
4/. The great return / - or the Reactivation of the Association of Folk Musicians in Zbąszyń (featuring local aficionados and folk musicians) in 2000 (previously active from 1959 to the 1980s) - continuous engagement of the Museum in the field of bagpipe music in the country and abroad, in collaboration with the Association
5/. Reconstructions and returns to the roots inspired by artifacts and archives a/. Adoration of the Shepherds Renaissance triptych painting by Mateusz Kosior, Poznań 1572, currently displayed in the Połajewo church - the reestablishment of the tradition of caroling at the crib in 2001, referring to the waning tradition of wassailing, including Wielkopolska pipers encouraged commune head Stanisław Pochyluk to adopt 3 important resolutions: * the meetings were to be cyclical * a local pipe band was to be established in Połajewo * a bagpipe calendar was to be printed each year (first edition in 2001) - thanks to the Marshal of the Wielkopolskie Province, Marek Woźniak, the event has an international character (each year features pipe bands from Wielkopolska and the Polish mountainous regions, as well as 1-2 ensembles from other European countries)
6 /. DIPLOMA of the 1 st Folk Music Competition in Kopanica (1937, Museum archives) as an inspiration to reactivate the event on site - 2 nd Competition in Kopanica, featuring pipers and goat pipers - in 2005, the Competition formula was expanded to include the Tomasz and Walenty Brudło Bagpipe Trail /initiated by regionalist Zbigniew Skoczylas in collaboration with the Museum of Music Instruments in Poznań/, in which pipe bands and invited guests ride in chaises following the trail of musicians between Kopanica and Podmokle (30 km), giving several gigs on route to their destination * Pipers Retro Train / /, from Wolsztyn to Kopanica
6a. Tomasz and Walenty Brudło Bagpipe Trail Folk Music Competition in Kopanica
7/. Political and historical celebrations, anniversaries, etc. as an inspiration to popularize bagpipes internationally: Three editions of the European Meeting of Pipers, Poznań, Wielkopolska 2004 Poland joins the EU (pipe bands from 11 member states) 2010 Chopin s Year in Poland + E. Radziwiłłówna s 1826 print presenting a pipe band (Marcin Syba i Józef Nadobny) Pipers Europe visits Chopin (pipe bands from 5 countries visited by Chopin, including the village of Nohant, France) 2011 Scottish Pipefest in Poznań / East meets West (Scots & pipe bands from 5 other EU member states) Exhibition Wielkopolska dudami stoi /pictures, instruments, archival materials, booklet, concerts/ in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage and the City of Poznań - Vienna, Haus der Musik / / - Brno, Zemske Muzeum /2007/
8/. ENTHUSIASM IS INFECTIOUS, or the effects of neighborly collaboration: a/. Kahlica / 15 th century stove tile with a piper (co-identified with Lubo Tatarka in Slovenska Lupca, 2009) inspired the Ozveny hradnych murov festival / / - the last 2 editions were endorsed by the honorary Consule of Slovakia in Poznań, dr Piotr Styczyński b/. Nowa Amerika Universität Laboratorium Kozła / Dudelsack Labor - a succesful attempt at marking out a bagpipe trail in the Lower and Upper Lusatia ( ), supplemented with a book of essays
9/. PIPERS GADGETS... Dębowa vodka + liquors /2007/ - Pipers anthem /2012/
10/. PROSPECTS a/. stabilization - internal / improved use of collected documentation/ - external /no stable backing from local authorities; frequent political changes entail upheavals of cultural policies; no strong NGO present to ensure continuity - e.g. the case of Kopanica/ b/. new projects - e.g. soundtrack to the silent film "Wieczornica Ludowa" made during World War II / recording of a secret patriotic meeting and a presentation of regional dances featuring a pipe band from Southern Wielkopolska / new grant - musicians and most people in attendance were identified / exhibition of film stills and a meeting on the 60th anniversary of the event, with 5 living participants in the original meeting; Poznań, 2002/
Thank you! Janusz Jaskulski
