20 GENERAL EDUCATION CLARIFICATIONS Look for the General Education link at the UWRF Registrar s Undergraduate Catalog Web Site for additional information. 1. In general it is hoped that if there is any legitimate question concerning the validity of a course within a student s program, the student gets the benefit of the doubt until the new General Education program is entirely in place. Current continuing students may choose to operate with existing or switch to new program Transfer students may choose to operate with either program New freshman students must satisfy the new General Education requirements 2. No General Education class can double count as a requirement in the Liberal Arts Music Major. 3. Up to two General Education courses can be double counted as credits towards a Music Education Major, a second major, or a minor. As additional General Education classes are approved, more double counting options could occur. 4. University requirements (diversity and global requirements) can count as credits towards a major, or they could come from General Education classes. Although a student must take the two requirements their credits do not necessarily count toward the 38 credits of General Education. 5. The courses taken under the SB (Social and Behavioral Sciences) and HF (Humanities and Fine Arts) designations must be from different disciplinary prefixes. 6. The courses taken under the S (Sciences) and SL (Scientific Investigation) designations must be from different disciplinary prefixes. There are some SL courses that are only a single credit. These classes must be taken along with the corresponding lectures, thus converting the class from a three credit S to a four credit SL. In this area students must take an SL class, but the second class can be either S or SL. 7. It is possible for a General Education class to be valid for more than one designator, but a student taking that class can only count it in one of the designators. SEE UNIVERSITY ONLINE CATALOG FOR ALL RESTRICTIONS GOVERNING THE GENERAL EDUCATION PROGRAM. University Requirements There are also two university requirements that do not count within General Education. Students are to take one course designated as American Cultural Diversity (D), and take one course designated as Global Perspectives (G). Both courses must be 200 level or above and must be at least three credits. These classes can be anywhere in the student s program. 19

MUSIC DEPARTMENT POLICY ON TECHNIQUES COURSES Students have the opportunity to test out of any techniques course or portion thereof. See the techniques instructor for the proper procedures. All waivers and test-outs should be handled by the Department Chair in the form of letters to the Registrar as soon as the test-out results are known. See Department Chair for more information on test-out policies and procedures. 21

23 APPLIED MUSIC ELIGIBILITY Applied music (private lessons on an instrument or voice) is an extremely expensive instructional service that is offered to music majors and minors, who are fulfilling degree requirements, at no extra cost (Sections 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5). If space is available, non-music majors or minors, or music majors and minors taking applied music for credits beyond those required for their degree, may enroll but are subject to an additional fee of $350 per credit (Sections 6, 7, 8, 9, or 10). To become eligible for private lessons with no additional fee, a student must: 1. Officially declare a major or minor in music. 2. Take one or more academic courses in music (usually theory) concurrently with applied music, or as soon as the student can enter the course sequence if a major or minor is declared late in the academic year. 3. Demonstrate basic performance competence through an audition on the instrument. The following policies will also affect applied music: 1. Consistently failing grades or frequent withdrawals from applied music courses may result in a student being declared ineligible for further applied music study. 2. Incompletes are to be made up during the next term the student is on campus. Failure to make up an incomplete may render the student ineligible to register for applied music until the deficiency is corrected. 3. Music Education Majors must register for 2 applied credits (primary instrument) per semester for a total of 8 credits at the 100 level and 6 credits at the 300 level. Liberal Arts Music Majors must register for 1 credit (primary instrument) per semester for a total of 4 credits at the 100 level. If a secondary applied area is taken, it must be for 1 credit per semester at the 100 level. 2-credit, 300 level courses in a secondary applied can be taken if the Upper Level Applied Music Audition is passed (see following page) level applied music is open only to music majors who have completed 4 semesters at the 100 level, passed an audition to be accepted into the 300 level, and receive permission from the instructor to register for the 300 level. 5. Students may not register for more than two areas of applied music during any one term without the permission of each applied instructor, the student s advisor, and the department chair. 6. Juries are required for each applied music course taken. 7. Exceptions to the above policies must be approved by the department chair and the applied instructor. Students are expected to practice a minimum of six hours a week for each applied credit. Most practice rooms are available on a first come-first serve basis. Practice rooms may have a sign-up sheet posted on the door to reserve a practice time and others may require a key for entry. Practice room key-safe codes may be obtained in the UWRF-MD Office with permission from the applied instructor. REGISTERING FOR APPLIED MUSIC COURSES: APPLIED MUSIC PERMISSION NUMBER The Applied Music Permission Number for registration is available at the UWRF-MD Office. In order to receive your Permission Number, you must complete and sign Permission Number Request form. A separate form must be completed for each Applied Music course. The Permission Number Request form is available at the UWRF-MD Office, or online at the UWRF-MD Resources webpage: 22

24 AUDITION REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTRANCE INTO THE 300 LEVEL OF APPLIED MUSIC Following the completion of four semesters of Applied Music study (in one area) or its equivalent, with an average grade of B or better, each student shall audition for a Music Faculty jury. The jury's decision will determine a student's acceptance into the 300 level of applied music. Each audition requires a minimum of 15 minutes of music, consisting of the requirements set forth by the following criteria. Students must provide a program and timings of each work performed. All accompaniments are required. Submit the program to the Music Department Chair at least three weeks before the audition, to make sure all repertoire criteria are met. The audition will begin with a choice piece, followed by jury requests of selections from the remaining pieces. After each audition a vote will be taken by secret ballot, which will be tabulated and posted by the Music Department chair. The jury will consist of five members including the student s applied instructor and one from each of the following areas: keyboard, vocal, instrumental, and non-applied. If the applied instructor is on the current jury, an alternate from the same discipline will be chosen by the instructor for that one audition. Faculty membership on the jury will be on a rotating basis. These auditions are to be taken during exam week of the 4th semester (or its equivalent) of applied instruction. Written notice of students who intend to audition will be given to the current chair of the audition committee two weeks prior to exam week. The audition chair will set the exam times and notify the committee members. These auditions may only be taken twice. If a student fails on the second attempt an appeal may be made to a review board consisting of the applied teacher, the current chair of the auditioning committee, and the department chair. 320 BRASS Scales All brass students must pass a memorized scale test given by the instructor prior to the upper level performance consisting of: Major 2 octaves Natural Minor 2 octaves Harmonic Minor 2 octaves Melodic Minor 2 octaves TRUMPET 1.
