We are thrilled to share all of the art and happenings of the Booker Middle School Visual and Performing Arts Program with you monthly. You will notice that we are starting fresh with a new newsletter and format. We will be making tweaks and fixes here and there and would love to have your feedback as we go. 2 Marcus is an 8 th grader who participates in both the 2D/3D Art and Drama disciplines. This month he has been chosen by our faculty for our VPA Student of the Month! Ms. Mills says he stands out because of his quiet confidence. Ms. Herbert said recently in a Herald-Tribune article that he is, sensitive and intuitive. A smart artist. Both teachers agree they are impressed with his emerging artistic voice both visually and on stage. Marcus expressed that he is very much enjoying studying Surrealism with Mrs. Herbert. He says The project I am working on involves the sky reflecting on water and the sunset. I really like creating an illusion with this piece, In the drama program Mrs. Mills just announced that their spring drama production will be The Jungalbook. Marcus said this is exciting because, I ve never performed or seen a performance of The Jungle Book, so it s something entirely new! He is starting to think about the piece artistically, specifically how the character Baloo will be represented. Sounds like he has his eye on a certain role! Good Luck Marcus, and Congratulations! Marcus s Artist Pick: Rene Magritte Surrealist painter Rene Magritte ( ) The surrealist painter Rene Magritte was a Belgian painter known for such works as Treachery of Images, On the Threshold of Liberty, The Human Condition, and The Son of Man. He became well known for a number of witty and thought-provoking images. Often depicting ordinary objects in an unusual context, his work is known for challenging observers' preconditioned perceptions of reality. 3 Holiday Fun and Festivities!! There have been an abundance of projects and activities that our students and our teachers have been involved in!! Joint Winter Music Concert We had such a wonderful time celebrating the winter and the holiday season with the beautiful music of our Orchestra, Jazz Band, and Guitar students. A few of the pieces included All I Want For Christmas is You, Ancient Voices, and African Bell Carol. Winter Art Show and Poetry Reading Everyone was packed shoulder to shoulder in Tornado Gallery to enjoy the work of the 2D/3D and Digital Art Departments. Setting the mood were the students from the Dragonfly Café. Recruiting Tour The VPA program is looking to tomorrow!! Mrs. Mills and some of our talented students toured 10 area elementary schools giving presentations to prospective students. Each discipline got to strut their stuff and the 5 th graders had a wonderful time! Caroling It is a favorite activity of all Mrs. Goldberg s students to go to local senior living facilities and sing carols for the holiday season. This year did not disappoint! The kids felt like celebrities, and their favorite part of the trip was the looks on the audiences faces! 3

4 Guys and Dolls at the Asolo but wait there s more! The students of Mrs. Mills Musical Theatre class were treated to a performance of the musical Guys and Dolls at the Asolo Repertory Theatre. They loved the outstanding performers, beautiful costumes, and sets!! Tea House Poetry Reading Local artist, Maggie Davenport, invited the Dragonfly Café poets to share their poetry at the opening of her most recent work now on exhibit at the Tea House. Poets who performed were: Jailyn Gentile, Ezekiel Salak-Sezen, Kaitlyn McCloy, Veronica Wyman, Infinity Rist, Lily Johnston, Ursula Kushner, Julia Grandpre, Sophia Famiglio, Juliana Famiglio, Tatum Tellbuesher, and Ivy Autman. Thanks to the parents for joining us at this fun event. All State Chorus Competition All State occurs in January. We had 11 students make it to the final round of auditions but 5 actually made it in to the choir. There is a multi-audition process and all 11 made it to the last round. Way to go singers!!! The Tolstoy Story Play Bravo to all the students who participated in the drama performance of The Tolstoy Story Play. What a fabulous show! Thank you for sharing your fantastic talents. 4

5 Perlman Music Program Visit On October 14, students from the Advanced Orchestra and the Intermediate Orchestra were visited by Alumni from the Perlman Music Program, Suncoast. They listened to excerpts from various string quartets and discussed the unique musical qualities that defined the pieces, even creating story lines that followed the tone, tempo, and timbre of each piece. The students were then given an opportunity to conduct the quartet members in a performance unique to each individual conductor s style. The musicians that visited were: Brian Hong, violin Max Tan, violin Jenni Seo, viola Nico Olarte-Hayes, cello A huge thank you to the really amazing musicians, Brian, Max, Jenni, and Nico and also to both Amy Kagan and Elizabeth Power for arranging this incredible visit! SAVE Grant and even more!!! Sarasota Against ViolencE (SAVE) was funded by the U.S. Department of Education through the Project Prevent (P2) program to assist Booker Middle School (BMS, the Tornadoes). Funds to be provided by this additional P2 grant will be integrated with the existing VPA programs, but will supplement those activities to provide student-focused activities which align with P2 goals in general and with specific SAVE program goals. In association with this grant, Mrs Herbert invited vertical artist, Ritchie Brasil to create a mural inspired by the P2 program goals. Keep an eye out on campus for it s progress!! The Education Foundation Grant The Education Foundation recently released the names of grant recipients. Family Writing Nights promise to be even more exciting thanks to the grant we received for journals, art supplies and a sound system. 5

It is a funky little cottage on Fruitville. It boasts many varieties of tea and a small menu. It is a venue for musicians, poets, and artists.
