The Palmer Catholic Academy Performing Arts Newsletter Spring term 2017 Issue 2 Twitter Our GCSE drama class, have just presented three showcase performances to a live audience composed of our peers, family members and teachers as a part of our course. Everyone s stimulus was the same: we were given two images showing recent protests against Donald Trump. As we were given sole responsibility for the structure and content of each performance, this added to the pressure to create something spectacular and gave us the freedom to incorporate whatever topics or issues we wanted. We were instructed to use the images as something to spark ideas, but we didn t have to re- create them. This particular type of assignment is called a devising unit. Our group decided to take our inspiration from Syrian migrants, as this is an issue that has been in the news recently and we thought it was important to get a message across to the audience about how ill- treated refugees can be. We used a non- naturalistic death scene to provoke emotions, and this definitely seemed to resonate with our audience as there were even tears shed! Our final product didn t only contain serious issues and themes however, as there were certain moments that we used to show our opinions on Donald Trump to which the audience laughed. On the whole, our drama performances went exceptionally well. Each member of the class put all their energy into it, and this was met with a positive response from the audience who seemed to enjoy it just as much as we did. As this was our first showcase live, nerves were kicking in and emotions running high, but in a way this added to the adrenaline that ran through our veins, a feeling that can only be achieved through performing. All three groups created performances that were completely different and I enjoyed watching other people s interpretations. I believe this unit has helped me to develop my drama skills - not just in my performance, but also within group work. I was not only pleased with the final result from my own group, but proud of the other two groups who were outstanding! Eleanor Harrison, 9 Fisher Protests Year 9 Showcase 8 th March 2017

Sing- a- thon 8 th March 2017 Over 40 students were involved in our Sing- a- thon. We are currently fundraising for our music tour to Lake Garda in Italy in July. The money we are raising is being split between our own funds and Drake Music. Drake Music is the leading national organisation working in music, disability and technology. Non- disabled people can make music in many ways and at many different levels. Their vision is a world where disabled people have the same range of opportunities, and a culture of integrated music- making, where disabled and non- disabled musicians work together as equals was raised 2

Lake Garda Music Tour Showcase 8 th February 2017 The choir and orchestra performed in a music showcase, performing a number of pieces that they re performing in Lake Garda in July. The choir have been working really hard to learn new music to perform at a variety of local concerts before our music tour to Lake Garda in July. They performed Hallelujah Leonard Cohen, Photograph Ed Sheeran and A Tribute to Queen Mark Brymer. The orchestra are growing ever stronger and more confident. They performed Sloop John B Traditional, When I m Sixty Four The Beatles and Can You Feel The Love Tonight Elton John. We have a number of very talented musicians at The Palmer Catholic Academy, but we need to pay particular thanks to Erin Davis, Veronica Arenas, Reychelle Bautista, Miko Lisiak, Stephanie Bullman and Tara Marie Al- Bazi. These students time after time go above and beyond to help in the music department. A huge thank you to all students involved. 3

Year 10 Showcase 23 nd February 2017 On the 23 rd February, my drama class and I had the opportunity to perform a live showcase to our families, friends and teachers. As part of our performance assessment we were asked to create a piece of Theatre in Education (TIE) with the stimulus of eating disorders. My group had chosen the topic of bulimia to focus on, with other groups focusing more on the themes of anorexia and anxiety. In class we had recently studied a play based on a true story called, Hard to Swallow by Mark Wheeler. The story focused on a young girl called Catherine and her family. Catherine had suffered from anorexia. This is where the stimulus of eating disorders had come from. It was a great opportunity to perform to a live audience and we have received good feedback from parents and teachers. Dionne Bertrand- Edinborough, 10 Alban 4

On Thursday 1 st March, 20 Year 9 and 10 students went to The Kenneth More Theatre in Ilford to see the musical Sweeney Todd. The Havering Music Makers told the tale of Sweeney Todd also known as Benjamin Barker, who returns to London after being wrongly deported by a villainous judge for a crime he didn't commit. Sweeney sets up a barbershop and forms a sinister partnership with his fellow tenant and pie shop owner, Mrs Lovett, where his clients get more than a close shave. All students really enjoyed the show and asked to watch it again. Quiz Night 14 th March 2017 On Wednesday 14 th March, the Performing Arts Department organised its second Quiz Night. A fun time was had by all. We had five teams from a mixture of departments but a particular thanks to Mentoring, R.E, History, Health & Social care, Malcolm and SLT for getting teams together. After five very difficult rounds and two table top rounds, the results were. 1 st Gryffindor Malcolm and Lisa Buxey (our site manager) 2 nd No AMD SLT team Joint 3 rd Son & Mother/Clueless - R.E & Mentoring, Health & Social care and History 4 th Bubbles Yr 8 & 10 students 5
