Crosstalk, used in 10/100/1000BASE-T systems, measures the mixing of signals between wire pairs within a cable. Alien Crosstalk, in 10-GbE systems, is the measurement of the unwanted signal coupling between wire pairs in different and adjacent cables. or from one balanced twisted-pair component, channel, or permanent link to another. The amount of ANEXT depends on a number of factors, including the promixity of adjacent cables and connectors, cable length, cable twist density, and EMI. ANEXT is tested in a six-around-one configuration. The affected cable is called the victim cable. The surrounding cables are the disturber cables. Unique push-pull plug fits any standard RJ-45 opening. To use, simply push the boot forward to latch into the outlet. Then pull back to release. This illustrates a six-around-one configuration. The central or affected cable is called the victim cable and the surrounding, adjacent cables are called disturbers This test configuration presents a worst-case scenario, and the center cable would be adversely affected by ANEXT. The push-pull design enables easy access and removal in tight-fitting areas, such as blade servers. 6 Free Tech Support Sales

Gain space in your cabinets (and ensure the door will close) by using our exclusive SpaceGAIN 90 Patch Cables. You can save up to 10cm of space in front of your patch panels and rack-mounted equipment. That s significant when every centimeter counts in today s highdensity data centers. If you ve ever retrofitted cabinets or installed extradeep equipment, you ve probably run into the problem of not being able to close the cabinet door. SpaceGAIN solves the problem. Better yet, you ll save both time and money by eliminating cable managers. The down and up cables are ideal for data center applications. Use them for high-density patch panel connections. Tame the cable chaos on your desk with the right and left cables. Use them for quick laptop connects and disconnects. 10 Guidelines for choosing The basics of fibre optic cable. Fibre optic cable is one of the fastest-growing transmission mediums for both new cabling installations and upgrades, including backbone, horizontal, and even desktop applications. Fibre offers a number of advantages over copper. Greater bandwidth Fibre provides far greater bandwidth than copper and has standardized performance up to 10 Gbps. But fibre also gives network designers future-proofing insurance with possible speeds up to 40 Gbps or even 100 Gbps. While not currently a standard, these speeds could become a reality in future proposals and ratifications. Keep in mind that fibre speeds are dependent on the type of cable used. Single-mode cable offers far greater distance than either or 50-micron multimode cable. In addition, fibre optic cable can carry more information with greater fidelity than copper wire. That s why telephone and CATV companies are converting to fibre. Low attenuation and greater distance Because the fibre optic signal is made of light, very little signal loss occurs during trans mission, and data can move at higher speeds and greater distances. Fibre does not have the 100-meter (328-ft.) distance limitation of unshielded twisted-pair copper (without a booster). Fibre distances can range from 300 meters (984.2 ft.) to 40 kilometers (24.8 mi.), depending on the style of cable, wavelength, and network. (Fibre distances are typically measured in metric units.) Because fibre signals need less boosting than copper ones do, the cable performs better. Security Your data is safe with fibre cable. It doesn t radiate signals and is extremely difficult to tap. If the cable is tapped, it s very easy to monitor because the cable leaks light, causing the entire system to fail. If an attempt is made to break the physical security of your fibre system, you ll know it. Fibre networks also enable you to put all your electronics and hardware in one central location, instead of having wiring closets with equipment throughout the building. Immunity and reliability Fibre provides extremely reliable data transmission. It s completely immune to many environmental factors that affect copper cable. The core is made of glass, which is an insulator, so no electric current can flow through. It s immune to electromagnetic interference and radio-frequency interference (EMI/RFI), crosstalk, impedance problems, and more. You can run fibre cable next to industrial equipment without worry. Fibre is also less susceptible to temperature fluctuations than copper and can be submerged in water. Design Fibre is lightweight, thin, and more durable than copper cable. Plus, fibre optic cable has pulling specifications that are up to 10 times greater than copper cable s. Its small size makes it easier to handle, and it takes up much less space in cabling ducts. Although fibre is still more difficult to terminate than copper, advancements in connectors are making termination easier. In addition, fibre is actually easier to test than copper cable. Migration The proliferation and lower costs of media converters are making copper to fibre migration much easier. The converters provide seamless links and enable the use of existing hardware. Fibre can be incorporated into networks in planned upgrades. Standards TIA/EIA-785, ratified in 2001, provides a cost-effective migration path from 10-Mbps Ethernet to 100-Mbps Fast Ethernet over fibre (100BASE-SX). An addendum to the standard eliminates limitations in transceiver designs. In addition, in June 2002, the IEEE approved a 10-Gigabit Ethernet (10-GbE) standard. Costs The cost for fibre cable, components, and hardware is steadily decreasing. Installation costs for fibre are higher than copper because of the skill needed for terminations. Overall, fibre is more expensive than copper in the short run, but it may actually be less expensive in the long run. Fibre typically costs less to maintain, has much less downtime, and requires less networking hardware. And fibre eliminates the need to recable for higher network performance. e Black Box Explains Fibre optic cable construction. Core This is the physical medium that transports optical data signals from an attached light source to a receiving device. The core is a single continuous strand of glass or plastic that s measured in microns (µm) by the size of its outer diameter. The larger the core, the more light the cable can carry. All fibre optic cable is sized according to its core s outer diameter. The three multimode sizes most commonly available are 50, 62.5, and 100 microns. Single-mode cores are generally less than 9 microns. Cladding This is the thin layer that surrounds the fibre core and serves as a boundary that contains the light waves and causes the refraction, enabling data to travel throughout the length of the fibre segment. Coating This is a layer of plastic that surrounds the core and cladding to reinforce and protect the fibre core. Coatings are measured in microns and can range from 250 to 900 microns. Strengthening fibres These components help protect the core against crushing forces and excessive tension during installation. Core Coating Cladding Strengthening Fibres Cable Jacket The materials can range from aramid yarn (Kevlar ) to wire strands to gel-filled sleeves. Cable jacket This is the outer layer of any cable. 10 Free Tech Support Sales

11 fibre optic cable. Buyer s Guide Multimode Fibre Types and Standards ISO/IEC Industry Standards IEC ISO/IEC Generic Cabling for Customer Premises ; IEC Product Specifications - Sectional Specification for Category A1 Multimode Fibres ; TIA/EIA-492-AAAx Detail Specification for Class 1a Graded-Index Multimode Optical Fibres ; (1) OM1 is typically a 62.5-um fibre, but can also be a 50-µm fibre; (2) OM2 is typically a 50-um fibre, but can also be a µm fibre; (3) OM4 is also a 50-µm laser-, but with higher bandwidth. Ratified October 2009.; (4) The ISO/IEC standard stipulates maximum cabled attenuation. The IEC and TIA fibre standards call for lower (and varied) bare fibre attenuation. Types of fibre cable. Fibre standards. Multimode cable has a large-diameter core and multiple pathways of light. It can be used for most general data and voice applications, such as adding segments to an existing network. It comes in two core sizes: 50-micron and 62.5-micron. Both have the same cladding diameter of 125 microns, but 50-micron fibre cable features a smaller core (the light-carrying portion of the fibre). Although both can be used in the same way, 50-micron cable is recommended for premise applications (backbone, horizontal, and intrabuilding links) and should be considered for new installations. Both also use either LED or laser light sources. The big difference between them is that 50-micron cable provides longer link lengths and/or higher speeds, particularly in the 850-nm wavelength. Single-mode cable has a small (8 10-micron) glass core and only one pathway of light. With only a single wavelength of light passing through its core, single-mode realigns the light toward the core center instead of simply bouncing it off the edge of the core as multimode does. Single-mode provides 50 times more distance than multimode, so it s typically used in long-haul network links spread out over extended areas, including CATV and campus backbone applications. Single-mode cable also provides higher bandwidth, so you can use a pair of singlemode fibre strands full-duplex for up to twice the throughput of multimode. It has a range between 26 and 82 meters, depending on whether you re using 50- or 62.5 micron cable. It also supports 300 meters over 2000 MHz/km multimode. 10GBASE-LX4 10-Gbps Ethernet over 1300-nm multimode. Uses wavelength-division multiplexing to support up to 300 meters over multimode. Also supports 10 kilometers over single-mode. e Black Box Explains Fibre connectors. The ST connector, which uses a bayonet locking system, is the most common connector. The SC connector features a molded body and a push-pull locking system. The LC connector, with a small-formfactor connector, features a ceramic ferrule and looks like a mini SC connector. The MT-RJ connector has a molded body, a small-form RJ-style connector, and uses cleave-and-leave splicing. The MTO/MTP connector uses highfibre-count ribbon cable. It s used in high-density fibre applications. The MU connector resembles a small SC connector, has a simple push-pull latching connection; and is for high-density areas. sales@blackbox.be 11
