Networking in private Households Impacts on electricity consumption A Study funded by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy Research-Programme Electricity O:/ /FOLIEN/BRP-ENERGY-IN-HOUSEHOLDS.PPT Page 1
Authors of the Study Bernhard Aebischer, CEPE, ETHZ ( Alois Huser, Encontrol GmbH ( Page 2
Agenda - Introduction of subject - Methodology - Technology and Market - Energy Consumption - Summary - Recommendation / Follow Up-Activities Page 3
Introduction of subject House with external and internal network Page 4
Introduction of subject - Internet is driving force for networking - Impact of electricity consumption unknown - Study should indicate possible change of electricity consumption - Study should recommend actions - Pilot project in Switzerland with a fully networked household Page 5
Introduction of subject (Pilot Project in Switzerland, started November 2000) House from the back Ms. Steiner using the oven Page 6
Introduction of subject (Pilot project in Switzerland, started November 2000) Bus Architecture Page 7
Introduction of subject Investigations in three areas 1. Direct impact of the networking on electricity in private households (Standby) 2. Indirect impact of the networking on electricity in private households (control, regulation automation, remote control) 3. Indirect impact of the networking outside the household (e-commerce, teleworking) Page 8
Methodology (3 Stages) 1 Procurement of Information (primary data) - Study of existing literature/talks to experts - Measurements of different devices 2 Processing of primary data - Analysis of measurements - Basic simulations of single devices - Calculations of scenarios 3 Report Page 9
Technology and Market The system 6\VWHP e-box A Bus Coupling Unit is added to each standard electronic appliance to make it able to communicate.lwfkhqã&rqwuroohu Internet Telephone Kitchen Touch Screen Satellite Service Providers Service Gateway Claudio Diodato Fridge Freezer 22/10 2VA Washer Dryer 1271 Vi Dishwasher High Techna ISX 1063 Oven FMS 90 XE Claudio Diodato Networking of white goods Page 10
Technology and Market - IT applications in households very spread - 1,9 Mio. PCs = 50% of households - 30 % are connected to the Internet (with average use of 4,3 hours/week) - Practically no networks in households today (except TV-cable and phone lines) (driving force for existing ones is enthusiasm, aesthetics, convenience, use of new services) Page 11
Technology and Market Arguments for promoters - Greater convenience - Increased security - Higher autonomy for elderly/handicapped - Reductions of costs by simpler systems - Efficient use of energy - Possibility to shop electronically - Management of power consumption Page 12
Technology and Market Anzahl Haushalte in Zeit Phone line Wireless Powerline No. of networked households in the USA (Source: The Yankee Group) Page 13

Energy Consumption Scenario calculations for different devices: - Multimedia and Internet - White Goods - Lighting control Page 17
Energy Consumption Considered aspects for scenarios: - Use of Multimedia/Internet will be 100% widespread within 20 years - Networking of white goods will take 40 years for 100% saturation - Saturation of households in blocks will take slightly longer - Saturation of lighting will take substantially longer - Assumption has been made that networking is possible without the need of additional wiring Page 18
Networking in private Households: Impacts on electricity consumption Energy Consumption Impacts, based on scenarios Upper threshold for additional electricity consumption in Swiss households as a result of inhouse networking ON SB/OFF Today s total consumption of households : GWh/a) additional in 2010: GWh/a additional in 2020: GWh/a --> + 30% in 2020 Page 19 GWh/a
Energy Consumption Further results - High probability that networking will be state of the art, but slower that up to know predicted - High dependency on progress of wireless communication - Maximum increase of 1,3%/a --> +30% - Standby- and Off mode are part of this with about 25% - Increasing with network is substantially higher than savings - Influence in outside systems very complex to investigate Page 20
Energy Consumption Impacts of networking in households outside the house - A lot of influences have to be considered: -E -Commerce with - Purchase of Consumer Goods - Procurement of information - Tele-Working - difficult to quantify Page 21
Summary - Networking in households will increase electricity demand substantially, and will even be the most relevant component of the growth in households - Networking does not very much support energy efficiency - All efforts to avoid the predicted increase have to be taken Page 22
Recommendation/Actions - Comprehensive studies to reduce uncertainty - Optimization of electricity consumption in Standby and off modes - Promotion of innovative solutions - Cooperation on international level - Monitoring of an existing networked household Page 23
