1 Electrical Depth Work Introduction With changes in a lighting system in a building come changes in the electrical system. The first part of the electrical work involves the analysis of the affected panelboards and associated lighting circuits. The emergency lighting was also considered here. Once these changes have been made, a study was conducted to be sure the existing system would be sufficient for the new installed system. Conductors and circuit breakers were also resized along with one of the main distribution panels and transformer. Finally, a protective device fault current coordination study was conducted to be sure the electric system was safe under all operating circumstances. 13 Emergency Lighting The current system in the building runs on normal/emergency switching for the purposes of emergency lighting and runs off of a generator. The generator turns on if it notices the normal electric is no longer running, forcing the switch to cross over to emergency power. After considering other options I have decided that this system will also work best with my system. Not only are the spaces very large, but any other type of emergency system would be distracting. Also, battery backup ballasts for the luminaires are not an option since I have already decided to use a daylight control system which uses ballasts specific to the control system. The chart below will show the available normal/emergency circuits, what wattage is offered from removing the existing system, and the fixtures I have decided to add to the system in place of the existing. 16 Control System The daylight control system I have chosen for this project is one that will help reduce the lighting loads during daylit hours by automatically dimming and switching certain zones. The zones will be programmed into the system once the system has been put into place and have been determined in the lighting portion of this report. The entire system is made up of a series of power supplies which can each supply power to 64 ballasts and each need their own circuit on the panelboards. I have also specified daylight sensors which have been located in the lighting portion of this report. This system has not yet hit the market, so very little information is currently available. I am under the impression that this control system can also control other types of lighting, but no information is available to help me determine how many fixtures, which aren t linear fluorescent, can be placed on each power supply. I have not used all of the available lighting circuits from the existing design which leaves a good number of spare circuits. Since the appropriate information is not available I will assume that this system will fit on the current panelboards. The diagram of this system can be found in the appendix within the control system specifications. Analysis of Panelboard and Associated Feeder There have been four panelboards which have been affected by my lighting redesign. The panelboard and associated feeder I will be analyzing is panelboard D since the most changes were made to the circuits on that panel. Load Calculations LIGHTING: The loads for the changed circuits are listed above. Calculations for the existing circuits to remain: D-4: 12-2 x2-3 lamp fluorescent troffer (lamp 17W linear fluorescent- 18 input watts each) 0.54KW 8-2 x4-3 lamp fluorescent troffer (lamp 32W linear fluorescent- 33 input watts each) 0.8 KW 1.5 KW D-6: 8-2 x4-3 lamp fluorescent troffer (lamp 32W linear fluorescent- 33 input watts each) 0.8 KW 1-4 bare fluorescent fixture (lamp 32W linear fluorescent- 33 input watts each) 0.03KW 0.83KW RECEPTACLES: Each duplex circuit requires 180VA. The receptacles were counted from the power plans. All circuits fall under this maximum ampacity and will be protected by this size breaker and use (2) #12 & (1)#12 in ¾ conduit. Panelboard Protection I=VA/( 3(V))= (16450VA) /( 3(208V))= 45.7A This panelboard was originally protected by a 100A breaker. I will keep it at this size because of the fact that the control system was not placed on the panelboards, and there are many spare circuits on this panel where this system could be placed. Additional Design Loads The only design loads that have changed in my system are the lighting loads. Since panel D, which has been already analyzed, is on SPD2, the second main distribution panel in my system, I will select the minimum size for this piece of equipment along with its protective device. In turn, the building s transformer will be sized accordingly. The panelboards which are connected to this distribution panel are B, C, D, F and MP. 19 Uninterruptible Fire Power Supply Adjusted connected load Protective Device I=VA/( 3(V))= (159,160VA) /( 3(208V))= 441.8A This main distribution panel will be sized for 600A. Feeder Size Since the load on this distribution panel has changed so slightly the existing feeder can still be used: is (4) 600 KCMIL & (1) 4/0 in 4-4 conduit Building Transformer This transformer is also connected to another main distribution panel- SPD1. The lighting loads do not change the total connected loads on that distribution panel either. Since the loads have been changed only the slightest bit, the transformer that was used in the previous design will still be adequate for this design. The transformer was initially rated at 966 KVA, approximately 50% larger than the capacity of the system. 80

21 Protective Device Coordination Study The path I will address for this study will start at the building transformer, to SPD2, and end at panelboard D. These calculations will prove that my electrical system is safe under all conditions and that a fault will be isolated without disturbing any other part of the system. The exact transformer specifications were not given to me so assumptions were made with regards to the utility system rating (500MVA) and x/r ratio (12%). I have assumed the building s transformer is made by Square D and has an impedance of 4% and x/r rating of 2. Calculations 82

Conclusion The only design loads which have been affected by my redesign are the lighting loads. The necessary equipment has been sized, and through this in-depth study and comparison to the existing system I have proven that the existing system is adequate for my redesign. The fact that the same equipment can be used is a good thing, mostly for monetary reasons. It also proves that the system was initially sized correctly and is safe for operation. 83
