4 Carina Grega Food Network Space Final Thesis Report Executive Summary Executive Summary For the lighting portion of the thesis work, the open office area, boardroom, audience waiting area, and dining/kitchen area have been redesigned. The designs strive to be stimulating, functional, and efficient. Design goals were set forth and met in all spaces, including illuminance values and power densities. The primary facet of the electrical portion is the redesign of the electrical distribution system as if the Food Network spaces were designed as one project. In addition to this redesign, the affect of the lighting redesign on the electrical system is studied. The design set forth strives to be more efficient as well as more serviceable as it is simpler than the original solution. As the electrical distribution system has been it follows naturally that the effect of the electrical redesign on a major construction issue cost must be studied. Although the addition of a major transformer brings cost up slightly, there will be savings over time as the system is more efficient and easier to maintain. Food Network occupies only a small portion of Chelsea Market, the potential effect the Food Network spaces can have on other tenants is an important consideration. The audience holding area has the potential can be a very noisy environment and there are other tenants in its general vicinity. It was found that the other spaces are not negatively impacted, but perhaps an acoustical ceiling would improve the experience of the space for audience members

5 Carina Grega Food Network Space Final Thesis Report Project Background Project Background Building Name: Food Network Space Location: Chelsea Market, 75 9th Avenue, New York, NY Site: Chelsea Market occupies the block from 15th to 16th Street and 9th to 10th Avenue in New York City s Chelsea section. Its location links Chelsea s expansion South and West with the West Village moving North. It was formed by connecting 18 historic buildings through an 800 foot long concourse, 300 feet of which were once a covered rail yard. The space that Food Network now occupies was completely gutted. Historical: The Chelsea Market spaces were formerly occupied by the factory and offices of Nabisco from the 1890 s to the mid 1940 s. This was the birthplace of the Oreo cookie. The 18 buildings that comprise the current Chelsea Market range from 6-10 stories. These buildings along with the railyard and were all built between 1904 and the late 1930 s. Nabisco left the site in In the1970 s the complex became the New York Industrial Center but fell into great disrepair. In 1996, the newly renovated collection of buildings opened its doors to the public as Chelsea Market. Architecturally, Chelsea Market embraces its past. It integrates the materials and details of the original buildings to create a truly unique space. Size: Approximately 113,000 square feet Total Levels: The building section includes the basement, 6 above grade stories, mezzanine on 6th floor, and roof level. The Food Network space includes a - 5 -

Architecture: Approximately: - 75,000 sf office space on 2nd, 3rd, and 6th floors - 24,000 sf studio and technical space on 6th floor and mezzanine sf storage space in basement sf production/test kitchen space on 6th floor sf audience holding area on concourse level Technical space includes edit suites, studio, support, green rooms, dressing rooms, control rooms, etc. In the office space, there are open offices, private offices, conference rooms, waiting areas, media libraries, pantries, lounges, etc. The landlord raised the roof for a 30 height clear to accommodate the studio and technical spaces. 7 Carina Grega Food Network Space Final Thesis Report Lighting Overview and Considerations Lighting Overview and Considerations There are four spaces that were chosen for redesign, each with their own tasks, challenges and goals. The spaces are: Concourse Level Audience Holding Area 3rd Floor Boardroom Open Office Area 6th Floor Dining and Kitchen Area Although these spaces are different and have separate criteria, there are some goals that are to be carried throughout the entire Food Network Space. This is where ideas for new shows are formed. New programs are constantly being developed and older shows are always being improved upon. Several are actually taped in the studio on the 6 th floor. This area is suited for a studio audience; for instance, Emeril Live is taped here. The integration of the studio audience brings its own challenges to spaces such as the audience holding area. The dining/kitchen area is also a public space as well as being the fully functional hub of activity. Because of these unique details, the following points should be integrated throughout the design: Stimulate appetite This is important not only for the public who come into the space, but also for those who work there on a daily basis. Their focus is food, so it should be celebrate and mirrored in the lighting design. Food is best when it is fresh and uses high quality ingredients. This same principle is applicable to the lighting as well

8 Carina Grega Food Network Space Final Thesis Report Lighting Overview and Considerations Just Taste Life This is one of the primary mottos for Food Network. It is not only referring to food, but is a reminder to enjoy every moment and take time to truly live. Therefore, it is important to create a festive and pleasant atmosphere throughout the spaces. One of the best ways to describe the warm feel that the design should strive to replicate is home for the holidays. Not much is better than being in the most comfortable places, with family, friends, and of course great food. This may not seem to describe lighting exactly, but more so the feel that the lighting design should give the spaces. This photograph is a visual inspiration illustrating both goals - 8 -

10 Carina Grega Food Network Space Final Thesis Report Lighting - Open Office Area Design Criteria and Considerations Goals: -Create a comfortable, professional environment -Accommodate for extensive VDT use -Avoid distracting glare -Pay careful attention to Illuminance Ratios -Less than 3:1 task to near background -10:1 task to far background -Provide sufficient illumination on task plane Recommended Illuminances: Horizontal: 45fc Vertical: 10fc Direct Glare: (Very Important) As VDTs are in use in this area, it is critical to avoid direct glare. The discomfort due to direct glare is not conducive to a good working environment. Luminances of Room Surfaces: (Very Important) Ensuring that there is diffuse light will improve comfort and reduce overhead glare. Dark areas at tops of walls should also be avoided as light should be generally uniform and avoid contrasts. Reflected Glare: (Very Important) Reflected glare from the desktop and computer screen must be avoided as this causes discomfort to the worker and reduces visibility. Illuminating from the sides of the task or selecting special VDT screens can help eliminate this. Source/Task/Eye Geometry: (Very Important) If this is treated correctly, it can help avoid both shadows and reflected, which as noted previously are important factors with VDT use. Light Distribution on Task Plane (Uniformity) : (Important) As noted above, visual comfort is very important. Therefore, the design should reduce contrast by avoiding shadows and bright spots and providing a generally uniform illuminance on the ceiling, walls, and partitions. Luminance ratios should also be checked. Light Distribution on Task Plane (Uniformity) : (Important) Patterns should be avoided on the desk top as they can cause discomfort, reduce visibility, and are distracting. The illuminance on the work surface should be higher than the surroundings to improve visibility on the task, but must be uniform on the surface as well

11 Carina Grega Food Network Space Final Thesis Report Lighting - Open Office Area ASHRAE 90.1 Power Allowance: 1.5 W/ft 2 Note: Where lighting equipment is specified to be installed to meet requirements of visual display terminals as the primary viewing task, the smaller of the actual wattage of the lighting equipment or 0.35W/ft 2 times the area of the space that the lighting equipment is in shall be added to the interior lighting power determined in accordance with this line item. 13 Carina Grega Food Network Space Final Thesis Report Lighting - Open Office Area Controls ASHRAE 90.1 requires that areas greater than 250 square feet in buildings larger than 5000 square feet have an automatic shutoff. Therefore, this area shall be connected to a time clock system with a local override switch. The perimeter lighting and the main area lighting shall be switched separately. The main area lighting shall be further controlled by row. The task lights shall be connected to the furniture system for individual control. Panelboard Data All fixtures add up to only 2432W and therefore can be placed on a single circuit to a 277/480V panel. This should have a 20A circuit breaker and be wired with 2#12 + #12 Ground in ¾ Conduit. Please see the electrical section of this report for further details. 16 Carina Grega Food Network Space Final Thesis Report Lighting - Open Office Area Analysis and Conclusions In this space, the main goal is to create a comfortable, professional environment. This means providing sufficient illumination on the task plane to prevent strain and accommodating for VDTs to prevent distracting glare. The pendant fixture is primarily indirect, which provides an even ambient illumination thus avoiding bright spots, which would reflect in VDTs. Although there seem to be bright spots on the ceiling, they fade to the darker areas of the ceiling gradually therefore reducing reflections in VDTs. The fixture itself has a titanium finish and slim, crisp rectangular form that references the stainless steel appliances and islands throughout the kitchen. The vertical component of light provided is at a good level. This is due to the indirect component of light and results in good facial modeling, which aids communication and therefore improves professional interaction. Although the indirect luminaires provide adequate lighting levels, task lights are also to be installed in each workstation. These allow workers to increase illuminances at their individual desks as they prefer. The recessed fluorescent downlights provide the area light around the walkways while minimizing distraction. Fluorescent lamps are used throughout the space as they are efficient. This results in energy savings and a power density that is less than the allowance. It also minimizes maintenance needs as they have a long lamp life. For flexibility, the luminaires over each row of workstations form individual switching zones. This allows one person to work and less than the full lighting system to be turned on

The lighting should also draw the occupants to the boardroom table and focus attention towards the front of the room and projection screen. Direct Glare: (Very Important) Because it causes discomfort and a drop in visibility, direct glare must be avoided. It also would interfere with and VDT monitors that may be in the room. Modeling of Faces and Objects: (Very Important) Important professional contacts are made in the boardroom and communication is vital. Therefore, modeling of faces is one of the most pertinent issues here. Interreflected light should increase vertical illuminance on faces and thus make them seem more pleasant and easier to read. System Control and Flexibility: (Very Important) This is not listed as an important task through the IESNA recommendations. However, as there is a projection screen in the room, it is important to allow for control of the light scheme to be switched to allow for both general meetings and situations where the projector would be used. Luminances of Room Surfaces: (Important) As there is the possibility of VDT use in this room, it is important for room surfaces to interreflect and provide diffuse light to reduce direct glare. This also helps in modeling of faces. Reflected Glare: (Important) As there is a large amount of glass walls around the room, attention must be paid to direct glare to avoid causing discomfort to the occupants. There is also the possibility of reflected glare on the table. VDT use in the room also requires that reflected glare be minimized

Zones a, b, and e are to be on one, and zones c and d are to be on the other, The table lamp plugs into a local receptacle. Please see the electrical section of this report for further details. 25 Carina Grega Food Network Space Final Thesis Report Lighting - Boardroom Analysis and Conclusions In this space, a professional, productive environment is imperative, as important meetings are to take place here. Although it should be professional, it should also be vibrant and interesting to model the overall feel of Food Network and their motto Just taste life. The artichoke pendant fulfills both these requirements. It is a representation of a tasty, interesting, and healthy vegetable. It adds whimsy while obviously referencing food. It also catches your eye and brings it to the conference table, reminding that work is to be done. Highlighting the columns creates depth in the space, and using recessed fixtures throughout the space reduces distraction and again draws one to the conference table by contrast. The table lamp in the sitting area creates a feeling of home. It is welcoming and like the artichoke fixture, eases the occupant. Another need of a presentation space like this is a great deal of flexibility in controls. A five zone dimming system provides this flexibility and allows for preset environments. The preset environments allow one to change the feel of space instantaneously to suit the activity taking place. The indirect component of the artichoke fixture also aids good facial modeling for communication by increasing vertical illumination and filling in shadows. All fixtures in the space are equipped with lamps with good color rendering, which flatters skin tones. The lighting levels achieved are more than adequate and provide for those who prefer brighter areas. The dimming system allows for the levels to be brought down easily when preferred. The power density is a bit higher than preferred, falling above the recommended but below the recommended with applicable additions. As the system is to be dimmed, has decorative components, and meets all other goals well, this is acceptable

It is critical for detailed preparations in the kitchen area. Source Task Eye Geometry: (Very Important) This is very important in the kitchen area as detailed tasks are performed there. Appearance of Space and Luminaires: (Important) As this space is a highlight of the Food Network Space, this can almost be considered very important to relay the importance and emphasis of the space. Direct Glare: (Important) To ensure comfort and visibility for both diners in the dining area and chefs in the kitchen area, direct glare must be avoided. Points of Interest: (Important) Attention is to be drawn to the food. It is the primary focus of the entire business and is of utmost importance. System Control and Flexibility: (Important) Different times of day and types of food require different moods in the dining environment, thus there should be a good deal of flexibility. Different chefs may also prefer different levels of lighting for comfort and efficiency

30 Carina Grega Food Network Space Final Thesis Report Lighting Dining/Kitchen Area Controls ASHRAE 90.1 requires that areas greater than 250 square feet in buildings larger than 5000 square feet have an automatic shutoff. Therefore, this area shall be connected to a time clock system with a local override switch. The area is divided into 14 zones, 9 to be dimmed and 4 on/off only. Please see Lighting Plan for detail. Switches are located near major entrances except for those controlling hood lights which are located at the individual islands. Panelboard Data There are to be 6 circuits providing power to the fixtures (2) 277V and (4) 120V. All circuits should have 20A circuit breakers and be wired with 2#12 + #12 Ground in ¾ Conduit. Please see the electrical section of this report for further details. It is the area where the primary focus of the network food is prepared, presented, and tested. This is also a public space with high-end appliances throughout. It is very important to match this quality in the lighting. The goal is to create a stimulating and interesting atmosphere that is also functional. Attention must be drawn to the food. The fixtures over the dining table are a clear reference to fruit, especially with their bright coloring. This reference catches your interest and stimulates your senses. It draws you to the table to the presentation of the food. The pendant fixtures over the work islands in the kitchen area are similar to these fixtures, and therefore connect the spaces and at the same time are more fitted in appearance towards the clean, utilitarian work area. Wall washing fixtures emphasize the texture of the brick. This ties in with the Chelsea Market architectural goal of emphasizing the natural materials and textures in the building, drawing one to the past. This also balances the brightness that may come from the windows. All other fixtures throughout the space are recessed so that they provide light without distracting from the main areas of concentration. All lamps in the space have good color rendering properties. This is vital as the appearance of colors in this space is of the utmost importance. This enhances the presentation of the food allowing the true colors in the dishes to be seen. Good CRI also enhances communication by flattering skin tones. Good facial modeling is also very important for assessment of reactions and communication. The vertical levels of light achieved are high enough to fill in shadows on the face, allowing one to read nonverbal communication with more ease. The overall levels of light are adequate. This is important as creating a bright atmosphere results in a safer more hygienic space. It reveals spills and dirt that

Task lighting for kitchen work areas aids this as well, allowing individual stations to be brightened as needed. For flexibility, there are 14 control zones. This allows areas in use to be lit without wasting energy on vacant areas. Nine of these zones are dimmable. This allows for customization of light levels to accommodate for various events and moods. The power density in this space is very high due to the large amount of decorative light as well as the less efficient/higher CRI lamps used throughout. This is concerning, but acceptable for several reasons. For instance, nearly all fixtures are dimmable, and there are several control zones, so the space will rarely be at full output. Also, there are several smaller support areas that are not public surrounding this space. These secondary spaces can have simplistic, efficient lighting to bring the power density to an acceptable level

The appearance of this space and the audience s reaction to it will form the basis of their experience. Color Appearance: (Important) The primary tasks in the area (socialization and eating hors d oeuvres) require a pleasant appearance of skin and food to provide an appetizing experience for the audience. Direct Glare: (Important) Comfort and visibility are important and direct glare would hinder both and therefore must be avoided. Light Distribution on Surfaces: (Important) Avoiding distracting patterns and shadows as well as conforming to a good luminance ratio will improve the audiences perceptions by adding to comfort and visibility while ensuring a visually interesting space. Luminances of Room Surfaces: (Important) By supplying diffuse light from room surfaces in addition to direct light, nearly every other important design criteria is positively impacted. Modeling of Faces or Objects: (Important) As mentioned previously, socialization is an important function in this space. Good modeling of faces will enhance the communication between audience members. The food also must look appetizing to prepare the audience for an excellent experience. Surface Characteristics: (Important) As the architecture of this space emphasizes the materials used, they are a source of visual interest. However, undesirable contrast between the luminaries and their background must be avoided. It is important that they are excited for the show. It also should be noted that this space is the first that audience members will see of the Food Network areas, therefore it should create a good first impression. Finally, as the shows thrive on audience interaction, this should be induce here. The Plate fixture provides an indirect, soft and diffuse illumination throughout the area. The concept of the glass plate as a floating reflector allows transmission of light both horizontally and vertically, defining the glass form and providing ambient illumination. The fixture is interesting and high quality, and is also not overly distracting. Washing the walls takes away from the tunnel feeling a narrow space like this may take on. It also increases the indirect portion of light, which fills in faces and creates a glowing ambience to the space. Finally, the door leading to the elevator area that will bring the audience to the studio is highlighted to create anticipation. It is washed in red a color thought to stimulate the appetite. A food network logo, in red and white, is also projected on this area, adding an extra pop. The light levels are fairly even and are proportionate in the vertical and horizontal planes. The values are slightly higher than needed, but this is good as all fixtures are dimmable. Therefore, the levels can be reduced if too high, but also provides for those who prefer a bit brighter atmosphere. The area also falls well below power density allowances, which results in energy savings

The fixture provides not just downlight, but a soft glow around the semi-transparent housing. This creates a welcoming feeling of home The layout is even and clear. The halogen lamp provides warm pools of light and has good color rendering capabilities. This will make faces look healthy and induce interaction. This also will make any hors d oeuvres look more appetizing. Comparison Although the second solution is warm and inviting, it also needs a great deal more fixtures and wattage. It will have a lower base and installation cost than the first solution. However, the higher power density results in more energy consumption over time. In addition, the first solution is primarily 277V and the second is all 120V. This results in an even greater amperage drawn in the second case. Halogen bulbs have a shorter life than fluorescent this causes an increased maintenance cost. In conclusion, although the second solution seems much more simplistic, it will result in much greater costs over time than the first. The first is more interesting, achieves the goal better, and is more efficient

52 Carina Grega Food Network Space Final Thesis Report Electrical Overview Electrical Overview Existing System Overview Chelsea Market is served by Consolidated Edison, the electric utility for most of New York City. The Food Network space is supplied by two separate radial systems from the landlord. One 1400A, 277/480V, 3 phase, 4 wire plus ground feeder serves distribution panel DP-6S on the sixth floor, which in turn feeds all the equipment on the 6th floor and mezzanine. Another feeder, 1200A, 277/480V, 3 phase, 4 wire plus ground, serves panel LP-3W on the 3rd floor, which feeds the 2nd and 3rd floor, including the UPS system on the second floor. LP-3W also feeds LP-B located in the basement, which feeds all the equipment on the basement and concourse level. On each floor, there are several electric closets, each serving a different area of the floor. All 277 and 480 volt loads are served from the LP panels in each area. The 120 and 208 volt loads are served via an RP panel which is served by the LP panel in the area via a 480V // 120/208V delta-wye dry type transformer. The transformer for the studio dimming system is K-13 rated. Please see the single line diagram and equipment list for further clarification and sizes for the equipment. There is no indication of a generator on the Food Network drawings. However, I would be surprised if there is no generator for Chelsea Market. Emergency lighting is through integral 90-minute battery packs/ballasts. There is a 100kVA UPS system with batteries and a harmonics filter. This serves all of the technical areas on the 2nd, 3rd, and 6th floors as well as the mezzanine. The UPS, technical grounding systems, studio dimming system and fire alarm system are all connected to the building class E system. Each panelboard has its own main circuit breaker for overcurrent protection. There are also heavy duty fused disconnect switches for the studio dimming system as well as for two existing A/C units on the 3rd floor. As there is

As there are no stacked core areas, feeding the wiring up to the spaces was a difficult task and thus the spaces do not have uniform areas where equipment is located. Nearly all equipment is located within electrical closets, and as noted above, these closets are located throughout the spaces and serve an area of the floor. Lighting in the spaces is primarily 277V Fluorescent, but there are some areas where halogen, incandescent, and LED fixtures are used. Other areas such as the kitchen use all 120V fixtures. The kitchen is tied into the studio dimming system. This dimming system allows for the vast amount of flexibility needed in the studio area as well as the kitchen. There are no capacitors for power factor correction in the Food Network space. The main design situations were dealing with the haphazard way that feeders must rise up to the floors as well as supplying the UPS system for technical areas as noted above. The 3rd floor feeder comes from the basement and feeds down to the second floor, which feeds down to the basement and then back up to the concourse. This may seem disorganized, but it occurred this way because the spaces were designed as three separate projects. First, floors 2, 3, 6, and the mezzanine were designed, then the basement, and lastly the concourse. Please see existing riser for more information

58 Carina Grega Food Network Space Final Thesis Report Electrical Overview Electrical Redesign and Analysis Because the spaces were designed in three phases and have a haphazard arrangement, I chose to redesign the distribution system. After looking into several options, it was clear that having several panels and transformers throughout the floor (as is) is best for this layout. The spaces are too spread out and irregular for the distribution to be done efficiently any other way. The major problem, therefore, is the riser. As noted it is difficult to find areas through which wires can be wound up the building. It is thus even more troublesome that the design had to be done as it was, as this just causes more confusion in an already messy situation. Through the revised layout the 1200A feeder that went to the third floor and caused the confusion is brought to a 1200A panel in the basement. This is a shorter distance for such a large feeder to go. The distance to the LP-3W panel is 340 longer. Panels LP-3W, LP-2W and the UPS system are now to be fed from the new LP-B. This causes load in LP-3W to drop from 860.2A (Demand Load) to 443.7A. With an allowance for growth of 1.25 this comes to 554.6A and allows for the panel to be 600A rather than 1200A. The audience holding area has the potential to be a very noisy environment. A large group of people gather here, socializing and anxiously awaiting their admission up to the studio on the 6 th floor to be part of the audience during the filming of shows. The space is also very hard there are exposed ceiling and columns, as well as hardwood floors. The 2 nd floor is occupied by an open office space and there are also other tenants surrounding the space (see graphic below). The main concourse walkway borders it to the south. Because of this, not only are the acoustics within the space important, but the sound transmission to other spaces must be considered

This can causes speech within the space to become less intelligible and causes more echoing. This can cause the space to become uncomfortable for the occupants. Reducing the reverberation time can make the space seem warmer and raise intelligibility. This will result in a more home-like feel in the space and make it easier for people to communicate with each other. As this area is used for mingling and inducing interaction in the audience members, this is important. By adding polyurethane foam to the ceiling, the reverberation time is brought to a more acceptable level. One must be careful not to bring the reverberation times down too low this will cause the space to seem dead. This is also unwanted here as the space is supposed to be lively and cause excitement. When reverberation times get to low, people may be able to hear others conversations too easily as well, which may cause discomfort. The general NC level for stores, open office areas and public spaces is The calculations show that the actual value is around 35, lower than required, but a good result. A level of 35 is adequate for libraries, private offices, classrooms, etc. So it is fine here and allows for these type of spaces to be added in the vicinity of the Audience Holding Area without difficulty

66 Carina Grega Food Network Space Final Thesis Report CM - Cost Analysis Construction Management - Cost Analysis Cost Analysis Overview As mentioned in the electrical section of this report, the savings from increased serviceability over the years will be invaluable. The clearer, simpler layout will make it much easier to find and fix problems. The installation cost will also be decreased greatly. Feeding wire in this building is difficult as there are no clear risers. With the new layout the wiring only needs to go up, as opposed to the previous design where it fed up to the 3 rd floor and then back down to the 2 nd, then down to the basement before back up to the concourse. The amount of wiring surprisingly remains the same, as the footprints for the occupied areas of floors 2 and 3 are well offset from the basement area. As for equipment, much of the equipment remained, just rearranged throughout the building. In the end, only (1) 800A Panel was added (new LP-3W), and (1) old panel was taken away (old LP-B)

68 Carina Grega Food Network Space Final Thesis Report Conclusion Conclusion The goals set forth have been met. The spaces for lighting analysis have been redesigned to meet the design criteria. The unique attributes of each space have been accentuated to create an exciting and inspiring atmosphere while being functional as well. The new electrical redesign makes the layout clearer and increases serviceability. Electrical equipment has been checked to make sure it can serve the new loads correctly. Mechanical loads on the third floor have been analyzed as well, and have proven to be adequate. The acoustical analysis has shown that the space does not disturb surrounding tenants, but could use some improvement within via acoustical insulation on the ceiling. Finally, the electrical design is slightly costlier than the original, but $500 respective to the total project cost of $12 million is negligible. It will pay for itself through easier maintenance over time

ColorBlast 12 is specifically designed with the needs of lighting designers, architects, and retail window directors in mind. ColorBlast 12 is a sealed product designed for both indoor and outdoor installations. The stylish and rugged die-cast aluminum housing meets or exceeds specifications for use in wet and damp locations. ColorBlast 12 is available with a soft-focus, tempered glass lens or a clear tempered glass lens. The soft-focus lens produces a soft-edge 21 beam of light, while the clear lens offers an extended light projection. The housing is also equipped to affix spread lenses, louvers, and other attachments and is available in either a black, white, or aluminum powder coat finish to match its environment and prevent oxidation. Designed to quickly aim the fixture without the need of special tools, ColorBlast 12 includes an industrial-grade constant torque hinge. 104 PDS-150e Color Kinetics PDS-150e intelligent power/data supply is specifically designed for Color Kinetics bcolor Series and icolor Series fixtures. PDS-150e provides a robust 150W power source and intelligent data drive circuitry. This data circuitry conditions data supplied from a DMX512 controller, including Color Kinetics full line of controllers, to a format compatible with the fixtures. This integration of power and data simplifies wiring installation. The 150W power source features a built-in ventilation fan in addition to an automatic over-temperture shut-off to protect it from damage due to overheating. The data drive circuitry has been specifically designed with short circuit protection to prevent failures due to incorrect wiring/installation. PDS-150e also features diagnostic LEDs to aid troubleshooting of Color Kinetics systems. PDS-150e automatically accommodates supply voltages ranging from 100VAC to 240VAC, which must be hard-wired to the supply. Light fixtures are hard-wired to two-piece locking connectors for easy fixture disconnection and reconnection to output terminals. RJ45 data input and output connetors let you daisy-chain data from one power/data supply to another. A DMX repeater is provided to maintain the integrity of the data in large installations.
