For your convenience, you can also simply use the Dissector as is with just a few clicks a complete Dissector can be accessible for online viewing or for download or printing by your students. Important Notes This manual is comprehensive and aims to provide instruction for every function you may wish to perform while customizing your Dissector. For FAQs, visit the FAQ page on the Dissector site Your Thieme Sales Representative will be happy to assist you with any queries beyond functionality of the site. We recommend that you use either Firefox or Chrome as your browser during your customization. These browsers have been found to work best with the advanced functionalities used in the Thieme Dissector. If you must use Internet Explorer (IE), please ensure you have upgraded to the latest version, which is IE9. Please note that the final publishing process can take up to 24 hours. It is recommended that instructors start the publishing process at least one day before they would like their students to be able to access it. Similarly, please be aware that due to the large amount of content and the high-quality images in each Dissector, the PDF preview can take up to one hour to generate.
3 Overview 1. Customize your Dissector. On the Manage Content page, click the plus sign on the left-hand side of the body regions to reveal the available modules within the unit. Re-order the modules or units simply by dragging and dropping them to their desired location. Click on the links to review the popup content, and uncheck the box if you wish not to include the content. Please note that if you uncheck the popup boxes, an html link to the pop-up will still show up on the specific page where the pop-up should be. If you check the boxes, the pop-up will also show up as additional content pages in the Dissector. Open the module in editing mode to customize the content. You can include videos in your Dissector by placing your cursor where you d like the video to appear, then clicking on the drop-down menu in the upperright hand corner of the module window. You will be notified at your account s address when your preview is ready for downloading. Review your Dissector for accuracy and completion. If further changes are needed, please return to the Manage Content page on the Dissector site. When you are satisfied with your changes, create another preview PDF for your review. 3. NOTE: Clicking Publish will submit your content to our conversion and delivery processes. Do not publish unless you are sure your content is final! The final Publish process can take up to 24 hours to complete.
4 You will be notified at your account s address when the publishing process has been completed. The will include details about how your students can access their Dissector manual. 4. Republication Once you have published your Dissector, modifications may be made using the newly added Republish function. Simply modify your content as detailed below, and publish the Dissector as normal. You will need to notify your students that their Dissector has been updated so they can download the changes in their offline viewer, VitalSource Bookshelf. o On desktop and laptop platforms, the Dissector Document is updated by right clicking on the Dissector in the All Titles screen, then clicking check for book updates. The Dissector will be automatically updated. o On mobile ios systems (ipod/ipad), students will first need to delete their original Dissector Document, then redownload the Document to receive the new version. To do so, they will need to press the edit button in the top right of the screen red icons with a minus sign will appear to the left of their books. Next, they will press the minus sign next to their Dissector, and a red button marked Delete will appear to the right of their Dissector. They can then press the Delete button to delete their Dissector and hit Done to confirm they are done deleting books. Their Dissector will now appear in the Other Books section of the All Titles screen; they can then press that Dissector s icon to redownload the updated version. Organizing and Editing Content Getting Started Log in to your account on the login page using your username and password. The main navigation menu appears in the upper right corner of the window. The Manage Content page is where all your customization takes place. The Finalize & Publish page allows you to review your work and complete the publishing process that distributes your Dissector to your students. Before you begin to customize the content, feel free to take a look at a preview of the Unedited Thieme Dissector to get an overview of the body of content that s at your fingertips. You can also publish the Unedited Thieme Dissector for your course if you choose not to customize your own.
5 Manage Contents page The Manage Contents page is a navigational overview of the Dissector content, in which you can make a number of organizational customizations to your Dissector. See below for what you can do and how you can do it. Re-order body region units. The top level of the Manage Content page consists of units organized by regions of the body. Simply click, drag and drop the title of the unit to organize the order in which your students will perform the dissection. View modules within a unit. Each unit contains a number of modules with discreet dissection procedures. Click on the plus sign to the left of a unit title to expand the available modules in that unit. Re-order modules. Click and drag the title of the module to place it in a new location within the same unit. You can also expand multiple units and drag a module across a unit, if you wish to do so. Edit unit and module titles. Click the pencil icon to the left of the title to reveal a text box and customize your unit titles. Delete content. If you wish not to include a module or an entire unit, set their inclusion status by clicking on the pencil icon and checking or unchecking the Included box in the right hand column of the Manage Content page. By default, all units and modules are included. View and edit module content. Clicking on the plus sign next to a module title allows you to access the Dissector module content for editing and review. Edit content. Clicking this link will open the module content in editing mode. In this overlay window, you can edit text content similarly to how you edit a normal word processing document. Further discussion on text editing is in the Editing Content section of this manual. Note that the pop-up links with muscle information are not live in this view. View Unedited Thieme Dissector. Clicking on this link will bring up a window of the original content as it was provided before customization. Note that you cannot perform editing functions in this view. Revert to Unedited Thieme Dissector. Clicking on this link will replace your saved version of the module s content with the original unedited content. Please make sure you want to do this before clicking the link, as there is no way to recover your edits once you revert to the unedited content. Pop-up content. Expanding module content also reveals pop-up links that are associated with that module, if any. o The pop-ups contain additional information on muscle attachments and actions. o If a pop-up is unchecked in the editor, the content will still be accessible via a hyperlink in the document. If the pop-up is left
6 Editing Content checked, the content will appear within the actual body of the Dissector in addition to the hyperlink. o You can review the page s content and set their inclusion status (by checking or unchecking the box to the right of their link) from the Manage Content page. o Note that while the pop-up links are visible in editing mode, the links themselves are not active. o Note that the pop-up content is not editable. o If you have changed the checkbox settings for any of the pop-ups, click the Update button to save your changes. Choosing the Edit content option for a particular module allows you to customize the content for your Dissector. Details on the various functions are below, and we also suggest you familiarize yourself with the functionalities by testing them out in editing mode. Notice the toolbar at the top of the window. It provides similar functionality to common word processors. Hover your cursor over a button to reveal its function. Details about the toolbar in editing mode is below. The content area contains text and images. Text can be deleted, inserted, and styled. Images and videos may be selected, deleted or moved. More information about images is in the Notes on Images section of this manual. Please note that the page break indicators will not show in the final output. They are only visible in editing mode and are there for your guidance. Please note that links to pop-up content and videos are not active in editing mode. You can view their content from the Manage Content page, when viewing the Unedited Thieme Dissector, in the PDF preview output, and, of course, in the final version delivered to students. Note: the orange Identification bullet used in the Unedited Thieme Dissector is a stylized bullet that exists in editing mode as a.jpeg image. Thus it will not function like an automated bulleted list. To insert a new identification bullet, select one somewhere else in the document by clicking in the center of the bullet, use Ctrl + c on your keyboard to copy it onto your clipboard, move your cursor where you would like to insert the new bullet, and press Ctrl + v to paste it into your document. The Editing Mode Toolbar See below for details about editing functions in the toolbar that you may not be familiar with. Close. Closes the editing mode window and brings you back to the Manage Content page. You will be prompted to save your edits if you have any unsaved changes.

In this drop-down menu you ll find a list of videos appropriate to the particular module you re editing. Select a video and it will be inserted where your cursor is currently positioned. Notes on Images Images used in the Thieme Dissector have been specifically composed to best complement the dissection techniques and anatomical features in the text content for the Unedited Thieme Dissector. Additionally, page text and images have been laid out to keep images on the same page as their corresponding text. While much thought has gone into the composition, selection and placement of images, we realize that some users will want to remove an image or place it in a different location. The instructions in this
8 section will describe how to perform these actions, but we urge caution in doing so, as you may affect the completeness and layout of your customized Dissector. Remove an image. While in editing mode, simply click on an image and press delete on your keyboard to remove and image. If you choose to delete an image, be sure to delete its accompanying caption, as this is a separate element on the page. Insert an image. Choosing from the images used in the particular module that you have open in editing mode, you may click the Image Manager button on the toolbar to insert an image into your document. Note that various functions are allowed to further edit image such as resizing them. It is strongly recommended you do not change the size, resolution, or dimensions of the original image in order to preserve the integrity and visibility of the image and its labels. Move an image. Select the image in editing mode by clicking on it. Press Ctrl + x on your keyboard to cut the image and place it on your clipboard. Click to move your cursor at the location you wish the top of the image to appear and press Ctrl + v on your keyboard to paste the image back into your Dissector. Notes on Videos By default, your Dissector will contain links to videos inserted at appropriate points within the document. To insert a link to a video in another location, place your cursor where you d like the video to appear, then select the video from the video drop-down menu for that module in the top right corner of the editing window (indicated by a video camera icon). You can delete and replace video links at your discretion. Review, Finalize and Publish When you have completed all of the customizations for your dissector, click on the "Finalize & Publish" link in the header. The first step on this page is to create a preview PDF that you can download and review to make sure that your customized Dissector is correct. Click on the blue "Preview" button to begin the generation of your PDF. PDF generation can take up to an hour. You will be notified at your account address when your preview is ready for downloading. Click on the link included in the notification to begin your download. NOTE: The PDF is large (about 60 MB). Once you begin downloading the PDF, please let the download complete. Do not cancel it mid-download. The link provided is good for one use only. After you have downloaded the PDF, review it to ensure your document is correct. If further changes are needed you may return to the customization area and make them. When you are once again satisfied with your changes, you can create and download another
9 preview PDF for checking. Also on the Finalize & Publish page is an area where you can review the appearance of information on the cover page of your published document. If changes are requires, click on the link provided to make them. When you're satisfied that your complete document is ready, return to the "Finalize & Publish" page and click on the "Publish" button. Clicking the "Publish" button will submit your customized content to our conversion and delivery processes, which can take up to 24 hours to complete. You will be notified by when the publishing process has been completed. The notification message will also include details on how your students can obtain their dissector access. Access for your students Upon completion of the Publish process, you will receive an with a link and an access code. Please forward both to all students who will need access to your customized Dissector. Your students will then be guided through a registration process to give them access to your customized Dissector. Please note that access to the Dissector is set up via WinkingSkull.com, Thieme s popular website for medical students. As part of the registration process for the Dissector we will also create a VitalSource account for each of your students. We are using VitalSource as a delivery platform for the Dissector. As a result, your students will be able to view the Dissector online, and download it to their desktop computers, iphones and ipads. The number of students who can use the access code that you have been provided with is limited according to the terms of your Dissector license.
