Pathfire Dish Repoint from Galaxy 26 Vertical (93º WL) to Galaxy 25 Vertical (97º WL) CWD Rev /30/2008

1 Shortly after 11AM ET on 6/29/2008, the Galaxy 26 satellite used for distribution of syndicated programming using Pathfire from CBS Worldwide Distribution and Disney ABC Domestic Television Distribution experienced a power system anomaly. As a consequence of this all traffic has been permanently relocated to Galaxy 25 Transponder 23. In order to continue receiving syndicated programming via this path it is necessary for engineering staff at your station to reconfigure the satellite feed to Pathfire equipment from Galaxy 26 to Galaxy 25. The transponder number will remain the same so there is no need to retune the receiver. The new carrier is active and we request that the station RF reconfiguration should be done as soon as possible to ensure continuity of content delivery. This procedure explains how to repoint the Pathfire dish formerly on Galaxy 26 to Galaxy Identify the Dish Antenna that is currently pointed at Galaxy 26. Figure 1. Spectrum Analyzer Connection. 2. Referring to Figure 1, connect a Spectrum Analyzer to the Galaxy 26 Dish by doing the following ** IMPORTANT FAILURE TO REMOVE AC POWER FROM RECEIVERS AS INSTRUCTED MAY RESULT IN DAMAGE TO THE RECEIVER - PLEASE FOLLOW THE INSTRUCTIONS CAREFULLY ** A. Disconnect AC Power from the CWD Syndication DVB Receiver (and any other receivers connected to this Galaxy 26 Dish). Then, disconnect the RG6 or RG11 cable from the LNB. B. Connect a short piece of RG6 cable to the LNB. Connect the other end of this cable to the input side of a two-way L-band splitter (ideally, a diode-steered splitter). C. Connect the RG6 or RG11 cable originally attached directly to the LNB to the DC Power Passing Port of the 2-way splitter (if the splitter is diode-steered or passes DC on all ports, it doesn t matter to which port it is connected). D. Connect a short piece of RG6 cable (8 feet or so) to the other port of the splitter. On the other end of this cable, connect a Spectrum Analyzer. If the splitter passes DC on all ports and is NOT diode-steered, be sure to place a DC Block on the input of the Spectrum Analyzer to prevent the DC from damaging this unit (if it is diode-steered or power-passing on one port only, no DC Block is necessary). 2 E. Set the Spectrum Analyzer to the following settings 1) Center Frequency = MHz (or 0.99 GHz) 2) Span = 50 MHz 3) Amplitude = 5 db/div 4) Resolution BW = 100 KHz 5) Video BW = 1 KHz F. Restore AC Power to the CWD Syndication DVB Receiver (and any other receivers connected to the Pathfire Dish) to provide power to the LNB. The Spectrum Analyzer display should reveal a flat line. 3. Mark the Dish s Azimuth & Elevation adjustments (with a Sharpie Marker) so that you will have a reference point for your starting position. Then, loosen the bolts that are used to lock down the azimuth adjustment. 4. Move the antenna VERY SLOWLY in a clock-wise direction (from a bird s eye perspective); i.e. the dish will be moving in a westward direction. After some movement, the display will appear as shown in Figure 2 (this should be Galaxy 3C at 95 WL) Figure 2. Galaxy 3C MHz. 5. Continue to move the antenna VERY SLOWLY in a clock-wise direction (from a bird s eye perspective). The Galaxy 3C downlink signal will soon be replaced by the display shown in Figure 3. 3 6. Move the azimuth back and forth a few degrees to be sure that you are on the main lobe, and not a side-lobe. Once the azimuth is optimized, then move the antenna s elevation angle DOWN slightly and optimize it as well. Finally, optimize the polarization by rotating the feedhorn/lnb until all traces of the Horizontal pol are nulled out. This may be tricky, since you are already within a few degrees of the optimized polarization; you may have to change the center frequency on your Spectrum Analyzer a few times to locate any traces of Cross-pol Interference (XPI) from the Horizontal pol and null it out. Figure 4 is an example (from AMC3K Transponder 23, which is unrelated to this procedure; merely an example) of how XPI can degrade the downlink signal if it is not nulled out Figure 4. Remove the 2-way splitter, and reconnect the cable feeding the receivers directly to the LNB. Restore AC Power to the receiver(s). 8. Check the front panel of the CWD Syndication DVB Receiver. The LED that indicates satellite lock (Labeled Lock on a Viacast Receiver and Link on a Skystream Receiver) should finally be illuminated. 9. If the IP Address of the CWD Syndication Receiver is already known, go to step 13. Otherwise, complete steps Figure 5. How to Start the Command Prompt Application. 10. On the Pathfire DMG Server, referring to Figure 5, left-click on the button and the menu item. Then, type cmd in the Open: field, and left-click on the button. Page 3 of 6

4 11. At the command C:\> command prompt, type ipconfig and press Enter. Figure 6. IP Configuration Info. 12. Among the resulting info, DVB Ethernet adapter DVB1 is the NIC connected to the CWD DVB Syndication Receiver. DVB1 should be assigned an IP address that begins with x.x (in Figure 6, it is ). Subtract 5 from the last octet of this IP Addresses to obtain the IP Address for the CWD Syndication Receiver (in this example, subtracting 5 from 97 would produce 92; so the resulting DVB Receiver IP address would be ). 13. Launch Internet Explorer on the Pathfire Server. 14. If the CWD Syndication DVB Receiver is manufactured by Viacast, complete step 15. If it is manufactured by Skystream, complete step Viacast IPC6500 IP Companion A. In the Internet Explorer Address field Enter the following Syndication IP address>/viewlb.html (Example: Figure 7. L-band Performance Screen on Viacast Web Graphics User Interface (GUI). B. Referring to Figure 7, notice the Low/High/Present Eb/No readings (5 th Row). The last number (the present Eb/No) should ideally be 7 or higher. Log this number, as well as the Signal Level (3 rd Row) in the provided fields on page 6. Page 4 of 6

5 16. Skystream uemr1600 Receiver A. In the Internet Explorer Address field Enter the following Syndication IP address>/ (Example: Figure 8. Skystream uemr1600 Homepage w/login. B. The browser window will appear as shown in Figure 8. Left-click on the Statistics link on the left-hand side of the screen, and the Enter Network Password will appear as shown. Type emradmin in the User Name field, and left-click on the OK button (there is no password). C. Referring to Figure 8, left-click on the Statistics link on the menu on the left-hand side of the display. Then left-click on the Satellite Receiver sublink. Page 5 of 6

Log this number, as well as the Signal Strength (1 st Row of lower table) in the provided fields on this page. CWD Syndication Galaxy 25 Lband Performance Signal Level (Viacast) = - Signal Strength (Skystream) = Present Eb/No = 17. Send an to gal25move@pathfire.com to indicate that you have completed the procedure, and also provide the Signal Level/Strength and Eb/No measurements recorded above.
