1 142 SIERRA ST., EL SEGUNDO, CA USA (310) FAX (310) DIGIT & 6-DIGIT "U" SERIES TIME CODE READERS OPERATION AND MAINTENANCE MANUAL The "U" Series of 4-digit and 6-digit Time Code Readers is designed to auto-detect, read and display either SMPTE, EBU, ASCII or ESE Time Code. Hours, Minutes and Seconds are displayed on six-digit models (Hours and Minutes or Minutes and Seconds on four-digit models). In the event the Reader receives erroneous time code, it continues to count. An error indicator (located to the right of the hours display) lights when bad code is detected. This feature can be turned "OFF" via an internal DIP Switch (#3, Bank 1). "U" Series Readers are available with LED displays measuring.56", 1.0", 2.3" and 4.0" in height. Enclosure styles include Desk Top ("ES" and "LX"), Console Mount (option "Q"), Rack Mount (option "P") and Wall Mount (option "Wall" standard on certain units). Custom displays and enclosures are available on a "Special" basis. Part Numbers covered in this Operation and Maintenance Manual include the following:.56 Displays 1.0 Displays 2.3 Displays 4.0 Displays Four Digits ES-361U ES-366U ES-369U ES-364U LX-361U LX-366U LX-369U ES-991U ES-941U LX-991U Six Digits ES-161U ES-166U ES-993U (1 Seconds) ES-943U ES-996U LX-161U LX-166U LX-993U (1 Seconds) Units receiving SMPTE (Drop Frame or non-drop Frame) or EBU are also able to display date encoded User Bits. An internal DIP Switch (#1, Bank 1) allows the unit to display this data (Month-Day-Year format for 6-digit units, Month-Day for 4-digit units). Switch #2, Bank 1 enables Day-of-Year mode in which the date is displayed as Day-of- Year (1-366). The 12HR DIP switch (#4, Bank 1) allows the unit to display in 12 hour format. When in 12 hour mode, a PM indicator (located to the right of the seconds display) lights during the PM hours. Units receiving ESE can accept ESE "Time" Code (TC76, TC89, TC90) or ESE "Timer" Code. Units receiving ESE "Time" Code display Hours, Minutes and Seconds (4-digit units display only Hours and Minutes). Units receiving ESE "Timer" code display Minutes and Seconds, and if the Generator outputs "Tenths of Seconds" data and the Reader has six digits, the unit displays Minutes, Seconds and Tenths of Seconds (99 : 59. 9). The "12/24" DIP Switch (#4, Bank 1) allows the unit to display time in either 12 or 24 hour format. (If the unit is receiving TC76 in 12 hour format, only the 12 hour mode is available.) When in 12 hour mode, a PM indicator (located to the right of the seconds display) lights during the PM hours. The "DATE" DIP Switch (#1, Bank 1) allows the unit to display Date information, if receiving TC90 (Month-Day-Year format for 6-digit units, Month-Day for 4-digit units). Switch #2, Bank 1 enables Day-of-Year mode in which the date is displayed as Day-of-Year (1-366). Units receiving ASCII display Hours, Minutes and Seconds (4-digit units display only Hours and Minutes) unless format B is being received. These units accept RS-232C, RS-422A or RS-485 voltage levels at 9600 baud. Formats "A", B, "0" or "1" can be decoded by the Reader. These formats are defined under "Specifications. LX units use a male DB-9 connector for the ASCII interface instead of a female DB-9 connector. The pin designations remain the same however. This should be considered if purchasing a cable for use with a LX unit. Several Options are available with the "U" Series Time Code Readers. Options Amber, ESE, J, P, Q, RS, TZ, UL, W and Wall are discussed under Options and Specifications. INSTALLATION & OPERATION The basic installation of the U Series Time Code Readers is as simple as connecting any of the proper Time Codes to the rear mounted input connector and applying 117 VAC to the unit. Units receiving SMPTE or EBU must have the input signal connected to the BNC input and ground connected to ground (if from a balanced source, the signal may be taken from either the Hi or Lo signal pin (XLR pins 3 and 2, respectively)). If the balanced output consists of an isolated transformer secondary, the unused output pin should be grounded to complete the signal path. 06/22/05 Page 1 of 9 4-6digit.doc

2 Units receiving ESE Time Code must have the input signal connected to input and ground connected to ground. Page 2 Units receiving ASCII Time Code must have the input signal connected to pin 3 on the DB-9 connector and ground connected to pin 5. If receiving RS-422A or RS-485, the Lo signal line connects to pin 3 and ground to pin 5. The Hi signal line is unused. The unit s Setup Features ( RUN, DATE & 12/24 ) and optional TZ feature can be configured on-the-fly or before initial application of AC power. The RS option should be configured before the initial application of AC power. Hardware is included with wall mount units to mount the enclosures to the wall. Two 3/16 holes should be drilled for the plastic anchors. Refer to page 3 to determine how far apart the holes should be drilled for the specified unit. Drive the anchors in flush with the wall (for concrete walls a drill slightly larger than 3/16 will be required). Screw the 5/ machine screws provided into the anchors. Leave the heads approximately 1/8 from being flush with the wall. Hang the enclosure and adjust the screws as necessary to have the enclosure hang snugly to the wall. Amber: ESE: OPTIONS When this option is specified, Amber LEDs are used. When this option is specified, a regenerated ESE Time Code Output is available on a rear mounted BNC (Output) connector. If Date information is being supplied to the unit, Date data is available in the ESE TC90 Time Code Output. This output is capable of driving up to 100 other ESE Time Code Readers at a distance of up to 4000 feet. J: When this option is specified, input voltage is 220 VAC, 50/60 Hz. P: When this option is specified, the unit is housed in a rackmount enclosure with an etched and clear anodized front panel. See Mechanical Specifications for dimensions. Q: When this option is specified, the unit is housed in a console mount enclosure with an etched and clear anodized front panel - 3.5" high x 9" wide x 8" deep. RS: TZ: UL: When this option is specified, an RS-232C ASCII or RS-422A/RS-485 ASCII output of time data is available. Time data is accessible on the rear mounted 9-pin D-sub connector. This option is available with a format A or B output. Pin 2 is RS-232C txd, pin 5 is ground, pin 6 is RS-422A/RS-485 txd A and pin 7 is RS-422A/RS-485 txd B. An internally mounted DIP switch permits selection of the data stream configuration. See page 4 for ASCII data stream specifications. DIP switch positions for ASCII configuration are shown below. Software is supplied with this option to enable a computer to read the ASCII output and set the computer s clock. Only one ASCII output is provided with option RS. RS-232C or RS-422A/RS-485 should be specified when ordered. When this option is specified, a DIP switch is supplied for setting the unit to another Time Zone. DIP switch positions for Time Zone Offset are shown below. When this option is specified, the unit is supplied with a UL approved wall mount power supply. W: When this option is specified, the unit is supplied with a three wire line cord. On LX models, a three wire line cord is standard. A two-wire power cord is otherwise supplied. To subtract seven hours from that of the Generator Clock, turn ON Switches 2, 3 and 4 of Bank 2. To add 3 1/2 hours, turn ON Switches 1, 2 and 3 of Bank 2 and Switch 5 of Bank 1.
