A Thanksgiving Lesson from Teaching House A Teaching House Thanksgiving Teacher s notes Thanksgiving Aim: Learners will develop Listening skills through a song and then discuss turkey pardoning as part of the new Thanksgiving traditions intermediate/upper-intermediate Length: Approximately 60 minutes (extendible) Note to teacher: This is a song activity which also develops the students vocabulary also. The song is a parody version of, but sung by a Turkey. The idea is to have a follow up discussion based on the Turkey Pardoning. This class is easily extendible VIDEO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hd4h5xklgue 1) Warmer: Get the students to talk about what their favorite part of Thanksgiving is (hopefully someone will say food) 2) Post the images around the room/give students a handout with the images on them. Sts write down a word or phrase for each image*. Sts then get in pairs and compare their answers and then some class feedback *Note there is no right or wrong answer here. 3) Tell the sts they need to write a short story using the words/phrases they chose previously. Sts then compare their stories and a quick fdbk on a couple of ideas 4) Tell the sts they are going to do a listening to find out what the story is actually about. They need to listen and decide if any of their predictions were correct and for the story. 5) Play song for the sts, would be more entertaining to show them the video as well. Get fdbk, were they correct with their predictions. 6) Give sts the lyrics to the song and listen and complete the tasks. Listen once, compare in pairs. Listen a second time and get fdbk 7) Writing task/speaking Task (depending on time - if there is a lot of time remaining do the task as a writing, if there is less time do the task as a speaking. Writing: Sts write a letter to the President in order for TURKEY GAYNOR to be pardoned from the chopping block. Give sts the model letter and get them to underline the three reasons given for pardoning the turkey. Allow sts some time to brainstorm their own ideas before writing their letters. Publish the letters as a gallery and get students to decide who makes the best argument Speaking: Sts group into As and Bs. Half of the sts take the role of President and the others as TURKEY GAYNOR. Sts need to have a debate with each other for Turkey Gaynor to be pardoned from the chopping block or not. Allow sts some time to brainstorm their own ideas before debating. After get sts to tell each other who made the best argument IMAGES WITH ANSWER KEY: BOSS BUTTERBALL INCUBATE ALIVE CRACKED 1
