Summer Reading Suggested Books Grade 2

TO THE PARENTS OF INCOMING SECOND GRADE STUDENTS The following his a list of suggested books we think your children might enjoy reading this summer. This is not an exhaustive list by any means. It is a list of some of our favorite authors and we have made an effort to include books with many different reading levels. It is our desire that your child enjoy his or her summer reading experience and you may want to provide some guidance as to which books to read, but let your child do some choosing as well. Chances are if your child is reading what s/he likes to read, reading will remain enjoyable and adventurous. We suggest that your child read at least five books by various authors. We also advocate reading with your child. This can mean two things. First, it may mean that you read one page and your child reads one page. It may also mean that you read the book with your child (not for your child). After you have both finished the book you can discuss it or act it out, or bring it to life in any other way you can imagine. Finally, we strongly urge you to read aloud to your child. There may be books on this list that are presently too difficult for your child (we have listed some advanced books), but are prefect read-aloud books for you! Research has proven overwhelmingly that children who are read to are more successful students. Go back to some of your favorite books that you remember from your childhood and use those as your inspiration. Make this summer an enjoyable reading experience for you and your child! The Second Grade Teachers
