1 Summer Reading Assignment Incoming Third Grade Students Part One Create a Comic Book Strip Materials: The book you choose to read One piece of large, white, construction paper or poster board (18 x 12 ) Pencil, colored pencils, and crayons no markers Steps: 1. Fold your construction paper or poster board to create six boxes 2. Identify the problem in the story 3. Recreate the problem in the top three boxes. Use color and add a caption below that describes what is going on in your illustrations. 4. Identify the solution in the story. 5. Recreate the solution in the bottom three boxes. Use color and add a caption below that describes what is going on in your illustrations. 6. On the back of your comic strip, write one paragraph (4-6 sentences) describing how the characters in the story solved or could solve their problem(s) using Catholic Social Teaching. > Ask yourself, how do the characters solve their problems in a peaceful way? > Use the attached paper to help you answer this question. 7. Add a title to the top of your comic strip. Please make sure your name is also on the front. Choose one of the following books to use for your Comic Book Strip: Henry Huggins by Beverly Cleary Freckle Juice by Judy Blume The Magic Finger by Roald Dahl Nikki & Deja by Karen English (Choose one from the series) The Carver Chronicles by Karen English (Choose one from the series)

Option for the Poor and Vulnerable We believe that the needs of the poor should be considered first. Those people who are not poor should share what they have with others. Dignity and Rights of Workers We believe that the needs of all workers are respected. When working we can use the talents God has given us. Solidarity We believe that all of us are God s family, and that we must live and work together despite the differences among us.

Postcard Project Materials: The book you choose to read Postcard Project templates Pencil, colored pencils, and crayons no markers Steps: 1. Read a picture book from the list below 2. Write a postcard to your future class about 3 different summer adventures For example: day at camp, vacation, visiting friends, walking the dog, building a tree house, etc. Use complete sentences and correct spelling, capitalization, and punctuation 3. Illustrate the front of your postcard showing where your summer adventure took place 4. Create a code name for yourself to use as your signature on all 3 of your postcards do not write your real name! Examples: If you love to swim, your name could be Speedy Shark If you travel, your name could be The Terrific Tourist If you visit museums, your name could be Cultured Carrie Come up with your own be creative!
