Calgary Chapter May 12, 1978 Last summer, Judy Sills gave an Orff course at the University of Calgary. This course will be given this year by Cynthia Downe. In February, Grace Nash's sessions during the Calgary City Convention attracted 300 people! She has been invited back for February 1979 at which time Lethbridge and Medicine Hat would like to engage her. Calgary would like to host the Alberta Chapter Conference in 1979 and hopefully a Southern Alberta Chapter will be established at that time. May 18, 1979 The Calgary Chapter was formed in November 1978 with: President Ruth Lomenda Treasurer Stanton Morris Secretary Marilyn Langford News Editor Susan Fuerbringer The chapter has 34 members and has held three successful workshops during the year. Grace C. Nash was the guest of honour at a luncheon meeting of the chapter during the Calgary City Convention in February. A recorder workshop was held with Marie Morris, and in March, Eric Favro presented a workshop. An April workshop had to be cancelled because of poor attendance. May 8, 1986 Jeanne Tearne spoke about incorporation. She also spoke about computer time for the conference. The Calgary Chapter is trying to establish its own levels training in Calgary. CHAPTER REPORT 1984-1986 The past two years have been a time of steady growth in membership and it has been encouraging to see newer members enthusiastically working on the executive. I was delighted to receive wholehearted support for our plans to host the 1988 National Conference, and we already have a sizeable number of members ready to go to work. Our two school boards are ready to help through their respective music departments. The Calgary Chapter has continued to sponsor three major workshops each year. Our clinicians have unfailingly provided us with rich resources and personal challenge. They have included Shirley Funk, Diane Shieron and Bob de Frece from the Edmonton Chapter; Donna Otto-Spence, and our own members, Ruth Lomenda, Vera (Slack) Patterson, Wendy Rae and Jeanne Tearne. Vera Patterson has taught recorder for the levels courses at the University of Alberta. Our biggest venture to date occurred in November 1984 when we joined with our Calgary Boards and Lethbridge to bring Jos Wuytack of Belgium here for ten days. Jos worked in

the schools and teachers were freed to observe classes. A Friday evening and Saturday workshop ended the week. Held at the University of Calgary, Jos led some 130 participants in his unique style as we danced, played and sang our way through a widely diverse and stimulating program. We were delighted at this time to welcome Morna-June Morrow on her first "official" visit to Calgary. The Chapter has sponsored an Introductory Orff Course for the past three years. Taught by Ruth Lomenda, the course has attracted an average of thirty participants and has undoubtedly contributed much to the growth of our chapter as well as offering a sound introduction to the Schulwerk. Ruth is a most creative person and a highly skilled teacher. We are very proud of her. This winter we changed the format from three-hour evening sessions offered weekly to four-hour sessions on alternate Saturday mornings, for a total of 20 hours. We added separate recorder and movement components taught by Wendy Rae and Sonia Yudcovitch. Sonia is an English trained Laban specialist and an exciting teacher. Wendy has superb recorder skills and her arrangements for recorder and Orff instruments delight us all. We have been working hard to establish levels training at the University of Calgary and finally have a firm commitment for at least Level One in the summer of 1987. For the first time this year we offered two evening mini-sessions for our members and intend to continue these. They make a great vehicle for sharing skills and knowledge. I feel very privileged to have served as Chapter President through these exciting years. The richness of friendships which grow from our activities is an unfailing source of joy. We had as our guest our National President, Alison Kenny-Gardhouse, and the Presidents from British Columbia, Alberta and Lethbridge Chapters.We also had many guests from the Alberta Chapter and from Medicine Hat. We need to do more visiting of other chapters. The level of sharing at this workshop gave our chapter a much needed boost. In July 1996 we held our first level II course in Calgary. Our thanks to Joe Berarducci for coming from Vancouver for this event. It was an outstanding success and we are planning our first Level III this year in July under Joe s capable leadership. Also thanks to Debra Giebelhaus-Maloney for her help in setting up the courses. Without accreditation our members do not have transcripts to send for scholarships. This year because of Work to Rule we were not able to hold our Level I course in the Fall. We tried to have it in January, February, March, but there was not enough registration. We plan to try again in the Fall. President s Report to National Executive 2004 Liaison Report Calgary Orff Chapter October, 2004 Submitted by: Adele Buehler, President For: Debra Giebelhaus-Maloney National Liaison ANNOUNCEMENTS; A Chapter scholarship of $250.00 was awarded to Cherlynn Sauter of the Calgary Orff Chapter and applied toward her Level I course this summer, 2004. We will be offering our first post Levels course in the summer of 2005 with Steven Calantropio as Instructor. Participants will be immersed in the compositions of the Orff Masters. SUCCESSES; We successfully hosted the Music for Children:Carl Orff Canada National Conference CONNECTIONS - in April/May of this year. The Conference committee was able to report success in terms of attendance, organization, quality of sessions, an abundance of positive feedback and a PROFIT of approximately $15,000.00. The Committee had the full cooperation and contribution of the Chapter. Many hours were donated by numerous members of the Executive and the membership to help make this Conference a success! The Chapter offered 3 workshops during the 2004 2004 term. (Workshops had 60 70 in attendance in spite of many Music Specialists having been reassigned to regular classrooms. We did not have a Spring workshop because of the Conference.)

We had 42 students some 27 in level I and the remainder in Levels II and III. We received a great deal of positive feedback regarding the Courses and the Instructors: Joe Berarducci, Debra Giebelhaus-Maloney and Shirley Murray. Several articles regarding the courses were published in the Fall, 2004 Ostinato. The Courses were run on a balanced budget and fulfilled the desires of the Executive to carry themselves financially. FINANCES: We have returned to a good financial status. We were able to have more local Clinicians for workshops Having the Conference here in Calgary lowered costs for this year as well. We now anticipate that we will be able to help cover some of the costs for Eve de Moissac of our Chapter who is now National Secretary and for Debra Giebelhaus-Maloney of our Chapter who is our Liaison Officer and National First Vice President. SUCCESSES March 19, 2005 We hosted the Western President s Meeting. Diane Sjoberg s workshop initiated a very enjoyable and inspirational meeting day for all.. Our workshops have been well attended even though we struggle against the odds of reduced numbers of Music teachers, a reluctance by teachers to give up Saturdays for professional development, busy work schedules etc. The Orff philosophy is proving to be as flexible as ever, adapting to ever changing conditions within our school systems. Executive We have a large, energetic, active Executive new, young blood to carry us into the future. Our newsletter has taken on a new energy particularly with added attention to advocacy of the Orff philosophy and Music education in general. There has been increased communication regarding neighboring Chapters and their workshops. We will include advertising in future issues of our Newsletter. This will bring in some income as well as inform members of resources and services available. We will also include a listing of those Music teachers who are available to substitute teach in our local School Districts. Advocacy We collected several letters from graduates of our summer Levels Courses for publication in the Ostinato as well as in our own newsletter. We were greatly encouraged by their enthusiasm and varied perceptions. We will build a more consistent and more vibrant rapport with the University of Calgary as well as Mount Royal College with the aim of introducing students to Orff and consequently to classrooms. We will include an Advocacy section in each Chapter Newsletter. (We issue 3 per year.) This section will provide quotations and accessible activities etc. for Music teachers to help them with advocacy. We will accept an invitation by the Editor of a local magazine Calgary s Child to publish an article on Orff Music for Young Children programs here in Calgary. We plan to have a more positive relationship with other Music organizations to develop a stronger voice for Music education for young children. This course will be open to all experienced musicians. Those interested in perusing the Post Levels accreditation will be expected to complete special assignments. Calgary Chapter has changed our workshop format from 4 workshops a year to 3. This is in keeping with the majority of the other Canadian Chapters. We feel that our membership is being pulled in too many directions, and there are excessive demands on their time. Our focus will be on providing quality workshops, well worth our memberships time and effort. The Calgary Chapter is very excited about our new Newsletter format thanks to our creative and computer savvy Elizabeth DiMarino. FINANCES: The Chapter has continued to benefit from a good financial status. Many local clinicians were used this year, and we have now successfully enticed several non-local clinicians to lead us through the next few workshop sessions. FINANCES CONTINUED: The Chapter has sent money to support the organizing committee of the National Conference - Collage 2006. In addition to full sponsorship to the National conference, of our President - Rachel Saxberg, the chapter has fully funded the flights to Toronto for 2 National Executive members Debra Giebelhaus- Maloney (National First Vice President) and Eve demoissac (National Secretary). The Calgary Chapter has also ear-marked 1500.00 in funds to sponsor 15 of our members @ 100.00 each to attend the National Conference in Toronto, 2006. Concern that there are some members that cannot attend workshops partly because of scheduling conflicts. Should we look at hosting Sunday workshops? CONCERNS CONTINUED: WORKSHOPS/COURSES: Discussion has arisen that we continue to strive to book clinicians and instructors that are in keeping with a high standard of education and experience in Orff Philosophies. Disappointment that our first attempt at offering a Post Level 3 Master Class did not come to fruition. Discussion and reflections have centered on possible factors: Accessibility - being limited to Post-Level 3 graduates not enough qualified registrants to draw from. The Timing of the course. Miscalculation in regards to the interest and appeal to our Membership. COMMENTS RE: NATIONAL BUSINESS Communication: This is still a challenge, however I feel somewhat improved this year. Website issues: When is it updated? How do we get our stuff on it? Pamphlets and CD: Have the Glitches been worked out and is the material available? Corporate Donations: We are still unclear about the corporate donation policy. If we pursue corporate donation how would they be handled? Must they be sent to National? Much positive feedback regarding the Courses and the Instructors: Joe Berarducci, Debra Giebelhaus-Maloney and Shirley Murray. The Calgary Chapter has had several very successful workshops. Attendance at the workshops has been 80+ people, which represents a significant increase from the past. Our attendance at the November workshop was a very healthy 87! The Calgary Chapter has also had a slight increase in membership. Until official numbers come from national, out best estimation is that we have 76 subscription members, and 9 members that renewed in September. There are also about 10-15 non-subscription members. SUCCESSES CONTINUED: FINANCES: The Chapter has been enjoying a very healthy financial status. We have been able to bring in some talent from around Canada as well as the United States to lead down many different and exciting paths of discovery. We also anticipate that we will be able to help cover some of the costs for Eve de Moissac (National Secretary) and Debra Giebelhaus-Maloney (President) related to their responsibilities for Carl Orff Canada. NEW VENTURES: This past year, as incentive to travel out of Province, the Calgary Chapter offered $100.00 each to a maximum of 15 members, towards their registration and attendance at the National Conference in Toronto. There were 7 people who used the $100.00 for the national conference. ADVOCACY: Calgary has continued to work towards a more fervent role in advocating the Orff Philosophy of Music Education: They have elected to build a rapport with the Nazarene University College, U of C as well as Mount Royal College with the aim of introducing students to Orff and consequently to classrooms. The Chapter is continuing to look into opportunities to advocate for support of Orff Courses at the University Level The Calgary Chapter is exploring different possibilities regarding membership with CMEA. The Chapter is continues to foster positive relationships with other Music Organizations to develop a stronger voice for Music education for young children. The Calgary Chapter is working on starting up a website. The Calgary Chapter secretary will develop a PowerPoint presentation for use in advocacy. In addition to mail, the Calgary Chapter has been emailing information and brochures to teachers and members. This includes brochures, updates and news. We have found this for be a cost-effective and efficient addition to our advertising and awareness campaign. COURSES: An Introductory Course will be held this spring, lead by Debra Giebelhaus-Maloney and Eve de Moissac. Doug Goodkin Jazz Course in August. EXECUTIVE: There are 13 members on the Executive including 3 Members at Large. There is lots of positive energy. They a great combination of experienced and new young executive members. CONCERNS: Lack of consistent attendance at meetings. Scheduling meetings to suit everyone s schedules can be a challenge. Keeping track of members that join us at odd times of the year. COMMENTS RE: NATIONAL BUSINESS Is there a specific media coverage release form or statement that National uses for permission of photos and video pertaining to adults (members etc.)? NEW VENTURES: Advocacy: - Children s Day the Calgary Chapter executive is interested in organizing a children s day as many other chapters do. We are still in the early stages of planning this, and would possibly be able to start in 2009 2010. - The Calgary Chapter has recently started a website, which is still under construction at this time. - The Calgary Chapter has been contributing to various music performances by teachers in the city. Orff the Wall is a group of student performances which are designed to raise awareness and educate parents, administrators and school board trustees about the benefits of a quality Orff based music program in schools. This past September we had Sanna Longden, a dance specialist, visit us from Illinois. We promoted this workshop to both Orff teachers as well as dance and phys. Ed teachers with great attendance from all three. In November we welcomed Deborah Ziolkoski with a Classical Adventure. As we traditionally have done, we offer our November workshop as Bring a friend for free for our subscription members, which boosts the attendance of this workshop, held at a busy time of the year. Finally we were excited to host J.S. Kofi Gbolonyo, a Ghanaian musician, currently working on his Ph. D at the University of Pittsburgh. We offered a Friday night session of drumming and dancing to complement the Orff-Afrique pedagogy on the Saturday workshop in January. We had a tremendous success with this workshop, with many non-orff members attending. Because of our recent success with our workshops and the Doug Goodkin jazz course offered in August 2007 we are enjoying a healthy bank balance. To return some of this money to our members, we have increased both the number and the dollar amounts of our local scholarships. We are offering $250 for up to four successful applicants for our summer levels courses, $100 for up to five applicants for our spring introductory course, and are sponsoring up to 30 people at $100 each who are attending the Encore National conference in Edmonton. We have also had success with attracting new members to our Orff executive, with Bonnie Jaycock, Tashina Hanrath, Linda Newton-Zaharia and Bonnie Kvicala joining us in various positions. NEW VENTURES: The Calgary Chapter has recently started a website, which is nearly ready to be launched at this time. The Calgary Chapter has been contributing to various music performances by teachers in the city. Orff the Wall is a group of student performances which are designed to raise awareness and educate parents, administrators and school board trustees about the benefits of a quality Orff based music program in schools. Also, we will be contributing to a pair of schools and another performing group who have been accepted to perform at the National Orff Conference in Edmonton this April. CHANGES (personal or professional): The biggest change within the Calgary Orff Chapter has been the loss of our Past President, Rachel Saxberg. She resigned in December due to personal reasons, which has left us without an experienced leader. Without having a mentor, someone who has gone through the job of being the chapter president has been difficult, but has been made easier with the amazing support of Debra Giebelhaus-Maloney and the other members of our Calgary executive. Many thanks go out to all. COMMENTS RE NATIONAL BUSINESS: We are glad to provide support for our National Orff executive members from Calgary. We have paid for airfare and hotels of both Debra, our President and Eve DeMoissac, the national secretary for events and meetings this year. Saturday January 17 th, 2009 SUCCESSES: Last year s workshops and our first workshop of the 2008-2009 year were well attended and well received. We had many non-orff teachers attend, and our membership numbers are growing (95 at the start of this year). Also, our summer levels courses were attended by 45 students from all over Canada, and some from as far away as Hong Kong and Korea. Due to our successes in our workshops and levels courses, we continue to enjoy good financial health. We will continue to look for ways to give this money back to our members in meaningful ways scholarships, sponsoring children s performing groups, providing some funding for national conferences, and paying for the National Past-President (a Calgary Chapter member) to attend Orff conferences and meetings. NEW VENTURES: Our website is up and running www.calgaryorff.com We are participating in a number of Orff advocacy initiatives, and are about to start a scholarship to be given to a group of teachers wanting to put on an Orff concert to promote the Orff philosophy. CHANGES (personal or professional): Our Calgary Orff Executive is changing, with 5 new members-at-large joining us in September. Next year we are looking at finding a new treasurer, vice president and newsletter editor. CONCERNS (personal or professional): Scholarships we offered 9 qualified applicants up to $1500 in scholarship money this past year, and had only one applicant, who received $250 towards the summer levels course. We are promoting these scholarships to our membership, at our workshops and through our newsletter and hope to share some of our excess funds in this way. Our intro Orff course this spring had to be cancelled due to low numbers. We are puzzled as to why this happened, and are hopeful to have a full course in the spring of 2009. Two of these ladies have agreed to take on the treasurer/membership secretary position in the fall of 2009. CONCERNS (personal or professional): Our executive meetings are well attended by the same people, while some of our executive attends nearly none of the meetings. Often when we have to discuss and vote on a motion, we have to send out an e-mail to ask everyone to vote so we can have quorum. Providing snacks and wine helps, but everyone has such busy lives that it is challenging to find the perfect time when we can all meet together. Lately we have been having trouble booking workshop clinicians. Our vice president sends out invitations and gets little to no response. We also are always looking for new people to invite, but having no clinicians list (as the National had provided in past years), makes it difficult to search for contacts for quality presenters. We continue to have excellent response to this and high levels of interested participants, despite the economic challenges being faced by many. We are also very excited to have been able to successfully invite Rick Layton and Doug Goodkin to present workshops for our chapter in October 2010 and January 2011, respectively. SUCCESSES: Due to Karen Petty s sudden illness and resulting cancellation one week prior to our scheduled September workshop, we were very happy to have Joe Berarducci fill in at the eleventh hour so that we did not have to cancel our key workshop for attracting new subscription members as well as renewing our membership for the year. Catherine Glaser-Climie presented fan amazing choral workshop for us on Nov. 14 th 2009. She is highly acclaimed local presenter and founder of the Cantare Children s choir, who perform worldwide. On January 16, 2010 we are pleased to be hosting Susie Green who will present the workshop Weaving Movement. In addition, we continue to enjoy a healthy membership as well as healthy participation in the three workshops that we present each year, resulting in a continuation of a good financial status as a Chapter despite recent economic challenges. NEW VENTURES: We are offering more scholarships, funded by our Chapter, to our membership towards our Intro course, our Levels courses, to assist with attendance at the National conference, and to support advocacy opportunities such as an Orff the Wall concert that showcases both the Orff approach and advocating for music as part of a balanced curriculum in all schools. CHANGES (personal or professional): We have a new 2009-2010 executive that was voted in at our September 2009 AGM(see attached file) with many brand new faces that are gifting the Chapter with their valuable volunteer time. The new faces include Ondrea Mann, our new Treasurer, Kate Ceri, our new publicity person, along with several new members-at-large. We were sad to say good-bye to Marguerite Boychuk, who has served our chapter for over 10 years in the position of Treasurer. CONCERNS (personal or professional): We have grave concerns regarding the new proposed Fine Arts curriculum being proposed for the province of Alberta. The new proposed framework essentially waters down the music curriculum with no specific objectives related to skills or knowledge. Instead, each of the areas of Fine Arts are presented in terms of modules that offer a surface sampling of the discipline and do not require the knowledge of any specialist teachers. In light of the expected severe education budget cuts that have been predicted next year, this situation for specialist teachers becomes even more alarming. Many schools already do not support a quality music program, and essentially, the new proposed curriculum gives schools a legitimate reason to not longer budget for music specialists. As president of the Calgary Orff Chapter, I have been asked to present some of these concerns to a forum of Arts Stakeholders and government officials, along with Sue Harvie. questionnaire regarding this new proposed curriculum and to advise their school/parent communities of these concerns. We continue to work towards establishing a relationship with the University of Calgary, that singularly supports Kodaly and does not recognize Orff as a legitimate pedegogy. In addition, the university is making major cuts to all arts-based pedagogy courses/degress offered, including music. We are looking into a way that would enable people to register for workshops,etc. directly through our web-site as it is becoming increasingly difficult to predict workshop attendances beyond our membership, as very few people are willing to use snail mail or take the time to phone in their registrations. In addition, we feel that if it was easier to register, it would help us attract more new members. In addition, we have recently improved our electronic/mail communication protocols with our surrounding school boards so that we can more efficiently send out information about workshops and/or things that our Chapter is doing to support teachers. We are hoping that we will be able to increase our membership, as well as ensure that we are meeting the needs of our current membership with this more efficient communication. We are also working on developing a Handbook of Executive duties and Responsibilities specific to the Calgary Chapter as we have many new faces on the executive. In addition, we are reshuffling some of the duties between executive members in order to function more efficiently and ensure that responsibilities are clearly laid out for each exec. member now and in the future. One example of this is separating the Treasurer and Membership Secretary Roles which have traditionally been handled by our Treasurer. We will also be adding the position of Web Manager, who will communicate with our Web Master to ensure that our web-site is up to date and look into new technology opportunities for upgrading the capabilities of our site. We are also working on redesigning our workshop brochures to more prominently feature the Calgary Orff Chapter name and logo to further increase our presence.
