Dear Talented tudent, Welcome to auditions for the AHS Drama Company s musical revue, NEW HOLLYWOOD CITY: A MOVIE MUSICAL REVUE! This show brings us back to the first complete cycle of musicals that you will be able to perform in during your stay here at Annapolis a musical revue (this year), a spectacle musical, an edgy musical, and a classic musical. We are so excited to welcome you to this process, especially freshmen, new students, and students new to Drama Company. This audition packet contains everything you need to prepare for auditions for our full season. We will be casting vocal and dance roles for the musical revue. Musical revues have plenty of opportunities for everyone, so we re looking forward to having a wonderful cast of diverse talent. The theme of this revue is movie musicals which came first the movie or the musical? While character development will be limited, it certainly won t hurt to take a look at the movies or musicals that you are unfamiliar with before you audition. We will be holding AUDITION WORKSHOPS during panther hour in blue block on Tuesday, January 2 nd ; Wednesday, January 3 rd ; Tuesday, January 9 th ; and Wednesday, January 10th! These workshops will be used to go over the choreography and the vocal music. The audition process measures your singing and dancing skills. However, we also value work ethic skills and consider those in casting. Below are some descriptions of additional traits and skills we will be looking for throughout auditions and how to demonstrate them! Commitment Review the essential dates as provided and be prepared to make arrangements with your family, school, employer, coach, or other extracurricular activity supervisor to be available for these rehearsals. Except for absolute emergencies, we cannot have last-minute absences from essential rehearsals or performances. Timeliness Please arrive early for all audition times. We are lucky to have so many eager participants, but that means we are running a very tight schedule. Showing up on time to auditions is a strong indication of what we can expect during the rehearsal and production timeline. Following Directions Following directions is a very important skill in theatre. Please be sure you carefully follow all the directions in this packet, as well as additional directions provided at auditions by ANY member of the production staff. Again, this is an indication of what we can expect in rehearsals. Preparation There is a lot of material in this packet! We know, because we made it. We are giving you the opportunity to prepare for your audition so that you can give us your strongest performance. We have provided plenty of resources here; please take advantage of them. We want to see what level of time and dedication you have put into this process.
Positive Attitude We don t much care for High School Musical, but we are all in this together. Please treat each other and the production staff with respect. However the casting turns out, you will likely be working with most of the people you are auditioning with. We are also not interested in casting people who cannot get along with one another. Building a strong ensemble is essential to a good production, and this can only happen with cast members who build each other up. Audition Logistics Your audition begins at your designated time. What to expect: 1.!You need to arrive at your designated time and quietly take your place and wait for us to call your name. 2.!Please wait in the designated area. Do not wander around the building. 3.!You will be waiting for a great deal of your audition. If you are in the room where auditions are taking place, you are expected to be silent. If you are in the waiting area, you are expected to maintain a polite volume as to not distract anyone else working in the building. 4.!Bring a not-too-messy snack and water. You re going to be here for a while! 5.!Remember that we like you! We have to keep neutral expressions, but we really do want you to do well. Take a few deep breaths in through your nose and out through your mouth before you start performing and try to calm yourself down. Give us your best shot in the moment! While we cannot offer specific help in preparing your materials, we can answer any questions related to the audition process. We ll see you in a few weeks, and break a leg! ~Your Directors Mr. Parr Artistic Director, Production Manager asparr@aacps.org Ms. Lorenz Executive Director, Company Manager elorenz@aacps.org Mrs. Gonzalez Music Director, Pit Director lgonzalez@aacps.org Mr. Murphy Technical Director, Executive Producer aemurphy2@gmail.com Mr. Korbelak Technical Director, Improv Troupe Director bkorbelak@aacps.org Ms. Hackett Business Manager, Thespians Advisor lhackett@aacps.org

Dance Audition Information Due to the nature of a musical revue, there will be many types of dancing used in this revue. We will utilize jazz, tap, partner, acro, and much more. If you are a beginner or novice dancer, you will learn. If you are an advanced dancer, you will be challenged with speed and leadership. Preparation!!!!! Practice the dance audition video to Brand New Day found on YouTube, ahsdramaco.weebly.com, or Google Classroom. This should look WELL REHEARSED. If you have any questions or concerns, please seek out help during Panther Hour. Please make sure you wear clothing that you can be active in for auditions. If you are a seasoned dancer, feel free to wear leotards. Bring any dance shoes (ballet, jazz, tap, etc.) you have to auditions. Also, bring a pair of hardsoled shoes to try a few simple tap moves. If you do not have any dance shoes, just show up with normal active footwear. After the warm-up and the Brand New Day audition, choreographers will assess basic movement and some short dance combinations. Try your best and have fun! Dance is an art in itself, so it can be silly or it can be serious. The Attitude Many of the songs in New Hollywood City are very energetic. Your dance audition should demonstrate that. If you miss a step or the moves are too complicated, try your best to stay in character and make the dance work for YOU. Try to enjoy yourself, never give up, and just have fun! The Audition The choreography team will lead different parts of the audition. Please do not try to solicit additional information from any of team, otherwise, you and the choreographer could be removed from the production.
