Virginia ALLENs in the pre-1800 Probate Records 1 Table of Contents ALLENs in the Virginia Probate Records, before 1800 ALLEN Probate Records in Virginia Counties, BY YEAR OF RECORD ALLEN Probate Records in Virginia counties, BY COUNTY Virginia Counties with Missing Probate Records, BY COUNTY NAME Virginia Counties with Missing Probate Records, BY DATE OF COUNTY FORMATION Virginia Probate Records for Counties Formed before 1776, BY COUNTY NAME In all the lists in this report, surnames are specified (and rendered in all-caps) only when they are not spelled Allen, and abbreviated given names have been expanded silently. Also, county names that are asterisked were among the original Virginia shires created in 1634. ALLENs in the Virginia Probate Records, before 1800 SOURCE: Clayton Torrence, Virginia Wills and Administrations, 1632-1800; an index of wills recorded in local courts of Virginia, 1632-1800, and of administrations on estates shown by inventories of the estates of intestates recorded in will (and other) books of local courts, 1632-1800 (1930; repr Baltimore, GPC 1965) This is an index to all Virginia probates prior to the year 1800 that appear in the county records books. There appears to be just one entry for each person s probate, presumably the first date of record for that probate, and the type of the record has been collapsed to just four categories: wills, nuncupative wills, inventories (which were supposed to be taken and presented to the next court after administration of the estate was granted), and other types of records (usually records of administration or estate accounts). Most of the early record books of the earliest VA counties are a jumble of all types of records, which implies that Torrence and his helpers actually went through these all page by page looking for probate items. However, once separate records series for wills and probates started up, they more likely relied on the convenience of intrinsic indexes. Whether Torrence et al. did go to the lengths of compiling his own index from the raw, jumbled records, it seems even more doubtful that he took account also of the county order books, in which orders of administration and inventory taking were typically recorded. Thus, a truly exhaustive search of any county s records would require that such books be examined, and in most cases scanned page by page.
