Gettig started How to use this maual This maual gives step-by-step istructios for safe ad correct fittig ad coectig of the module, ad operatio. Before you start, we advise you to read the whole maual, particularly the chapter o safety istructios ad the checklist for trouble shootig. You will the kow where to take care ad how to prevet mistakes which take a lot of effort to correct. tams elektroik Keep this maual safely so that you ca solve problems i the future. If you pass the module o to aother perso, please pass o the maual with it. Iteded use The carriage ligthigs are desiged to be operated accordig to the istructios i this maual i model buildig ad with model railways. Ay other use is iappropriate ad ivalidates ay guaratees. The carriage ligthigs should ot be mouted by childre uder the age of 14. Readig, uderstadig ad followig the istructios i this maual are madatory for the user. Cautio:! Itegrated circuits (ICs) are iserted o the module. They are sesitive to static electricity. Do ot touch compoets without first dischargig yourself. Touchig a radiator or other grouded metal part will discharge you. Page 2

WIB-13.2 Eglish Checkig the package cotets Please make sure that your package cotais: oe or six carriage lightig a CD (cotaiig the maual ad further iformatio) Required materials For coectig the carriage ligthig you eed: a electroic solderig iro (max. 30 Watt) or a regulated solderig iro with a fie tip ad a solderig iro stad, a tip-cleaig spoge, a heat-resistat mat, a small side cutter ad wire stripper, as ecessary a pair of tweezers ad log ose pliers, electroic ti solder (0,5 mm. Diameter), wire (diameter: > 0,05 mm² for all coectios). If you ited to shorte the module: a small metal saw. If ecessary for the exteral power supply of the LEDs: bridgig capacitors with a voltage sustaiig capability of > 16 V (whe coected to a power supply < 18 V) or > 25 V (whe coected to a power supply > 18 V) ad / or goldcaps with a voltage sustaiig capability of > 5,5 V. If ecessary additioal LEDs (e.g. for the trai rear lightig). If ecessary, rectifiers (see sectio 6, coectig remaiig sectios). 2. Safety istructios Mechaical hazards Cut wires ca have sharp eds ad ca cause serious ijuries. Watch out for sharp edges whe you pick up the PCB. Visibly damaged parts ca cause upredictable dager. Do ot use damaged parts: recycle ad replace them with ew oes. Electrical hazards Touchig powered, live compoets, touchig coductig compoets which are live due to malfuctio, short circuits ad coectig the circuit to aother voltage tha specified, impermissibly high humidity ad codesatio build up ca cause serious ijury due to electrical shock. Take the followig precautios to prevet this dager: Never perform wirig o a powered module. Moutig should oly be doe i closed, clea, dry rooms. Beware of humidity. Oly use low power for this module as described i this maual ad oly use certified trasformers. Coect trasformers ad solderig iros oly i approved mais sockets istalled by a authorised electricia. Observe cable diameter requiremets. After codesatio build up, allow a miimum of 2 hours for dispersio. Use oly origial spare parts if you have to repair the kit or the ready-built module. Fire risk tams elektroik Touchig flammable material with a hot solderig iro ca cause fire, which ca result i ijury or death through burs or suffocatio. Coect your solderig iro or solderig statio oly whe actually eeded. Always keep the solderig iro away from iflammable materials. Use a suitable solderig iro stad. Never leave a hot solderig iro or statio uatteded. Page 3

Eglish WIB-13.2 Thermal dager A hot solderig iro or liquid solder accidetally touchig your ski ca cause ski burs. As a precautio: use a heat-resistat mat durig solderig, always put the hot solderig iro i the solderig iro stad, poit the solderig iro tip carefully whe solderig, ad remove liquid solder with a thick wet rag or wet spoge from the solderig tip. Dagerous eviromets A workig area that is too small or cramped is usuitable ad ca cause accidets, fires ad ijury. Prevet this by workig i a clea, dry room with eough freedom of movemet. Other dagers Childre ca cause ay of the accidets metioed above because they are iattetive ad ot resposible eough. Childre uder the age of 14 should ot be allowed to mout the modules. Cautio:! Little childre ca swallow small compoets with sharp edges, with fatal results! Do ot allow compoets to reach small childre. I schools, traiig cetres, clubs ad workshops, moutig ad operatio must be supervised by qualified persoel. I idustrial istitutios, health ad safety regulatios applyig to electroic work must be adhered to. 3. Safe ad correct solderig Cautio:! Icorrect solderig ca cause dagers through fires ad heat. Avoid these dagers by readig ad followig the directios give i the chapter Safety istructios. Use a small solderig iro with max. 30 Watt. Keep the solderig tip clea so the heat of the solderig iro is applied to the solder poit effectively. Oly use electroic ti solder with flux. Whe solderig electroic circuits ever use solderig-water or solderig grease. They cotai acids that ca corrode compoets ad copper tracks. Solder quickly: holdig the iro o the joits loger tha ecessary ca destroy compoets ad ca damage copper tracks or solderig eyes. Apply the solderig tip to the solderig spot i such a way that the wire ad the solderig eye are heated at the same time. Simultaeously add solder (ot too much). As soo as the solder becomes liquid take it away. Hold the solderig tip at the spot for a few secods so that the solder flows ito the joit, the remove the solderig iro. The joit should be held still for about 5 secods after solderig. To make a good solderig joit you should use a clea ad uoxidised solderig tip. Clea the solderig tip with a damp piece of cloth, a damp spoge or a piece of silico cloth. After solderig check (preferably with a magifyig glass) tracks for accidetal solder bridges ad short circuits. This would cause faulty operatio or, i the worst case, permaet damage. You ca remove excess solder by puttig a clea solderig tip o the spot. The solder will become liquid agai ad flow from the solderig spot to the solderig tip. tams elektroik Page 4

WIB-13.2 Eglish 4. Operatio overview Possibilities of use The carriage lightig WIB-13.2 ca be coected directly to a vehicle s curret collector or the fuctio output of a digital vehicle decoder. For the power supply aalogue a.c. or d.c. trasformers or digital boosters ca be used. Desig of the PCB The carriage lightig WIB-13.2 have iserted 8 warm white LEDs. The legth of the PCB as well as umber ad layout of the LEDs correspod to the carriage lightig WIB-33.2 with itegrated fuctio decoder. Thus the (aalogue) carriage lightig WIB-13.2 are suitable especially for combiig with the lightig WIB-33.2 i a block trai. Flickerig protectio A itegrated smoothig capacitor supplies the LEDs whe short curret iterruptios occur, which prevets the lightig from flickerig whe poits or smudges o the rails are crossed. I case the itegrated smoothig capacitor is ot sufficiet, you ca coect a additioal exteral bridgig capacitor ad / or a exteral gold cap. Dividig ad shorteig the PCB The 240 mm log PCB (with 8 LEDs) ca be divided ito two 100 % equivalet parts of approx. 107 mm each (with 4 LEDs). Each part has: a solderig jumper to set the switchig o mode for the LEDs: smooth brighteig of the LEDs or simulatio of flickerig fluorescet lamps; a trimmpot to set the brightess; coectig poits for two exteral LEDs (e.g. for the trai rear lightig); a itegrated smoothig capacitor as a flickerig protectio; coectig poits for a exteral bridgig capacitor ad a exteral gold cap to supply the LEDs whe curret iterruptios occur. Each of the two parts of the PCB ca be shorteed by 30 mm to approx. 210 mm (with 7 LEDs) or 75 mm (with 3 LEDs). The remaiig segmet with oe LED ca be used e.g. as a driver s cab lightig or as lightig for the passeger etrace, by addig a small circuit (ot icluded i the package). Legth approx. Cautio: Whe usig power trasmissig coupligs pay attetio ot to exceed the maximum curret of the coupligs! tams elektroik Page 8

WIB-13.2 Eglish 6.3. Coectig bridgig capacitors I order to bridge curretless sectios you ca coect a exteral bridgig capacitor ad / or a goldcap or two exteral bridgig capacitor to each of the two parts. I order to supply the 8 LEDs of a whole PCB (or the 7 LEDs of a shorteed PCB), ormally oe capacitor or goldcap is sufficiet. Choose a electrolytic capacitor or a goldcap with a capacity as high as possible. As the housigs of electrolytic capacitors ad goldcaps are bigger whe the capacity is higher, the maximum capacity is limited by the space available to mout the capacitor. The miimum voltage sustaiig capability of the goldcaps is 5,5 V. The miimum voltage sustaiig capability of the capacitor depeds o the power supply. Solder the exteral bridgig capacitors accordig to the coectio diagram to the coectig poits E(+) ad E(-) ad the goldcaps or further bridgig capacitors to the coectig poits G(+) ad G(-). E(+) / E(-) G(+) / G(-) Bridgig capacitor > 16 V (power supply < 18 V) Bridgig capacitor > 25 V (power supply > 18 V) Bridgig capacitor > 16 V (power supply < 18 V) Bridgig capacitor > 25 V (power supply > 18 V) or Goldcap > 5,5 V 6.4. Coectig additioal LEDs SYou ca coect up to 2 additioal LEDs i series to each of the two parts (e.g. for the trai rear lightig). The ecessary series resistors are itegrated o the PCB. Solder the LEDs accordig to the coectio diagram to the coectig poits LED(-) ad LED(+). Please ote: It is ot possible to use electric bulbs istead of LEDs, as the voltage is restricted so far by the itegrated series resistors, that the bulbs would ot light. tams elektroik 6.5. Settig the switchig o mode for the LEDs You set the way the LEDs light whe switched o, separately for each of the two parts (with 4 LEDs each): smooth brighteig of the LEDs or simulatio of flickerig fluorescet lamps. The settig is doe at the two solderig jumpers o the PCB (see diagram i sectio 6.1.). I state of delivery (= solderig jumpers ot bridged) the LEDs brighte smoothly. I order to simulate flickerig fluorescet lamps you have to bridge the solderig jumper with a little ti-solder. 6.6. Settig the LEDs brightess You ca set the LEDs brightess via a trim-pot (see diagram i sectio 6.1.) separately for each of the two parts (with 4 LEDs each). This is also valid whe usig the uparted whole PCB. For settig the trim-pot use a small screw-driver. Page 9

Eglish WIB-13.2 6.7. Fixig the carriage lightig After completig the coectios, secure the lightig i place (eg. with double sided adhesive tape). 6.8. Coectig the remaiig segmets The after shorteig remaiig segmet with oe remaiig LED ca be used for istace as a driver s cab lightig or as lightig for the passegers s etrace. The remaiig segmet should be coected to the power supply via a series resistor of miimum 1 kohm. Whe coectig it to aalogue a.c. voltage, you have to coect additioally a diode 1N4148 accordig to the coectio diagram, as the LED will be otherwise damaged after a certai operatig duratio. Whe coectig it to aalogue d.c. voltage, the LED o the remaiig segmet will light i oe directio of travel oly. If you wat the LED to light i both directios of travel, you have to mout a bridge rectifier as i the coectio diagram. 7. Check list for troubleshootig Parts are gettig too hot ad/or start to smoke.! Discoect the system from the mais immediately! Possible cause: oe or more coectios are soldered icorrectly. à Check the coectios. Possible cause: Short circuit. The module is coected to locomotive or carriage groud. à Check the coectios. A short circuit ca result i irreparable damage. The LEDs do ot light.
