Funding included in the 2015 SPLOST for library technology and materials has been released. Using these funds, the library will be adding new books to the collection every month. The first major areas of the collection to see these updates will be the adult and children s nonfiction sections, along with large print. The library plans to continue adding new books to every section, so keep your eyes peeled! For technology we are planning additions to our new Launchpad collection for kids, along with improvements and additions to the patron-use computers, wireless printing capabilities, and database access. The library plays a vital role in giving the community access to the resources it needs, via print books or technology. Whether it s applying for a job or college, doing homework, getting healthcare information, learning to read, learning a new skill, or simply looking for a good book (in print, digital, or audio!), the library is here to serve you. We are excited to announce that Georgia Download Destination (GADD) has switched from Overdrive to RBdigital as the new vendor for e-books, e-audiobooks, and e-magazines. Use your PINES library card and PIN (Personal Identification Number) to register for RBdigital: http://flintriverga.rbdigital.com While RBdigital is compatible with most devices, at this time, there are some older, dedicated e-readers such as Nook Simple Touch, Kindle Voyage and Paperwhite that will not work with the RBdigital app. Overall, RBdigital offers more content, including digital magazines in an easy to use interface. Not only do we want to get everyone reading this summer, but we also want to get you moving and shaking at our phenomenal programs for kids, families, teens, and adults. We will have a special calendar of events just for our summer programs. STORIES IN MOTION This interactive story time is for toddlers and their parents or caregivers. The fun includes theme-based songs, fingerplays, activities, stories, movement, crafts, and more. Ages 1-3. Storytime and early literacy experiences are a vital part of child development. We want to partner with parents and caregivers to offer quality early literacy experiences for children that are age appropriate and fun! Ages 4-5. Seuss Celebration! Family Watershed Scavenger Hunt Saturday, April 14 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm Alexa Robinson, Watershed Protection Specialist with Griffin Public Works will meet with kids, teens and adults to educate on how to help protect our local rivers and river basin. She will lead an outdoor Scavenger Hunt and will present the Enviroscape, a working 3-D model. This event is encouraged as a pre-class for those planning to sign up for the Kid s Poetry Workshop and Art Workshop. All ages. River of Words Young Poets Workshop Tuesday, April 17 2:30 pm - 3:30 pm April is National Poetry Month. Young writers, grades K-12, are invited to learn about the power of poetic expression. Use your words in this workshop to develop poetry for the River of Words Project or your own artistic expression. The poetry and art workshops are FREE programs designed to help K-12 students understand their sense of place by studying a watershed in their own environment then expressing what they discover through poetry and art. The art and poetry can be entered into a statewide contest. River of Words Art Workshop Thursday, April 19 2:30 pm - 4:30 pm Young artists, grades K-12, are invited to express themselves through art. Captain Settles is a former Vietnam combat pilot who fought his way through employment disaster and other setbacks to succeed. Page 8 ADULT VOLUNTEERS NEEDED - SEAMLESS SUMMER LUNCH PROGRAM The library will again host the Seamless Summer lunch program, providing nutritious lunches for GRIFFIN-SPALDING children through 17 years of age. This program runs Monday through Friday from 11:30 a.m. COUNTY to 1:00 p.m. LIBRARY for June and July. Volunteers are needed from 11:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. You can come for an hour or two, or stay for the entire lunch period. APRIL IS NATIONAL POETRY MONTH - POETRY FOR FINES To celebrate National Poetry Month, the library will accept poetry as payment for fines! From April 9 through April 21 only, patrons will be credited one dollar for every line of poetry read or recited to library staff. Poetry may be original, brought from home, or borrowed from our collection. This program is limited to payment of late fees. ZOO PASS CHANGES! The Zoo Pass is no longer accepted on weekends. The Zoo Pass is accepted Monday (including Monday holidays) through Friday and is valid for up to four weeks. The Zoo is renovating parking and some animal habitats, and has limited parking; thus resulting in this change. The Zoo Atlanta DVD is a twenty-minute history of the zoo. All Georgia Public Libraries have at least one copy that may be checked out for one week with a valid library card. When returned, patrons will receive a pass for admission to the zoo for up to four people. Other passes available at the library are: State Park Pass, Puppetry Center Pass, Go Fish Pass, and the Michael C. Carlos Museum Pass. Georgia Public Library Service (GPLS) has partnered with libraries to encourage parents to read 1,000 books with their children before age 5. This program is designed to be a fun and easy way to help your child develop pre-reading skills vital to kindergarten readiness. The Griffin-Spalding County Library works with parents to help raise children who love to read and read to learn. We give parents ideas and information on helping prepare their child for lifelong learning. The library can show you how to nurture your child's literacy skills - even before he or she enrolls in school. From the time they are infants, children develop language and other early literacy skills that will help them learn to read. Register your infant - age 5 child for this program.
