6 I lied to my boss. Yep, I sure did. Not intentionally of course. We were talking about the Gale Courses Rawlins Library offers for free with your library card. I had just finished up with Windows 10 and Quick Books. Starting January 18 th, 2017 I told her I would be starting 3 new classes. Two job related and one just for me. Well.this is where I lied. They were ALL FOR ME! Seriously, I THOUGHT I had taken two job-related classes and one for me. I confessed that I had lied to her. She took it better than I imagined. She just laughed and pointed her finger at me. I thought I could ace the Windows 10 class. Not even close! I wondered, how hard can adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing be in Quick Books? Well, I gained a ton of information pretty sure I would do well on the final exam. Not so much. I think they threw in some trick questions.ha! You should give Gale Courses a try. They are amazing! They are FREE! Signed, Not such a Smarty Pants, Lisa Pfeiffer Reading Challenge Calendar Has it Been a Year Already??! Last year at this time Rawlins Library handed out calendars that had a book challenge on them. Patrons were challenged to read various types of books and keep track of it over the year. How many patrons took the Reading Challenge of 2016? If you completed reading all the various types of books on the calendar, please let us know. We would love to celebrate attaining your reading goal with you! For those of you who did not complete the challenge, don t lose hope. Reading is intended to be fun and relaxing, not at all stressful. The important thing to remember is to keep reading all the year through. Here are a few reasons why reading is so good for you: it keeps your mind sharp, it reduces stress, it improves your knowledge, it expands your vocabulary and it improves your memory along with so much more! This year I challenge you to read a little bit each day and start experiencing all the benefits it has to offer. 6.

8 Need somewhere quiet and more private to study or read? Whether you are working on a project or just relaxing with a good book, Rawlins Library now offers you two new options! Pods Connect to the future of educational venues by checking out the library s two new study pod stations. These self-contained study booths give students everything they need to get to work and get comfortable. A built-in table, power supply with USB ports, footrest, armrest and cushy seats provide a secure and secluded area in which to study, take an exam, or just simply enjoy reading! The high, padded sides and back reduce distractions and are equipped with connections for digital devices. The pods are located in the Periodical section and in the Teen area for the convenience of our library users. Enjoy! The public library is truly a phenomenon in today s world. Free knowledge, for anyone. Literally, anyone. I can t think of an equivalent other than going to a clothing store, checking out an outfit, wearing the outfit and returning it in four weeks, free of charge... Except books are so much better than clothes. I ve found that no matter what I read, the act of reading every day has helped me in nearly every aspect of my life. Here are a few of my favorite ways that reading has improved my quality of life, and will definitely improve yours. If you think that you don t have enough time to read. you re 1. Enhanced knowledge and intelligence 2. Stress reduction 3. Greater tranquility reading is soothing 4. Improved analytical thinking 5. Increased vocabulary 6. Improved memory 7. Improved writing skills 8. Helps prioritize goals wrong. We make time for the things that are important to us. How much TV do you watch? How much time do you spend trawling the web? You could easily replace those activities with reading. And you don t have to buy your books, just check them out at your local Rawlins Library. If you don t see a particular title you want, use our Interlibrary Loan program. You can access nearly any book on the planet! There s really no excuse not to start reading on a regular basis. The benefits far outweigh the costs, and after all, more knowledge never hurt anybody!! 8.
9 MEET YOUR LIBRARIANS A short biography of a Rawlins Library staff member each month Circulation Manager Hi everyone. I m Judy Ulvestad, Circulation Manager and Interlibrary Loan Manager for Rawlins Library. I have been employed here for 24 years; my hair still had color when I started - not that the two are related. I was born and raised in Huron, SD. I received a degree in Social Sciences from Huron College, which later became Huron University, and is now SPLASH CENTRAL (a waterpark). How fun, right? I moved to Pierre in the early 80s and my children (Reed and Amy) and I attended school, they as students and I as a teacher/computer lab aide. I spent ten years at the school and then this wonderful job opportunity came along at the library. I always wanted to work at the library so I could read all day. (Wink, wink.) Seriously, I really like my job and co-workers and the public. I especially find it satisfying to help a patron locate something they would really like through the Interlibrary Loan system. The most difficult part of my job is being exposed to so much to read, and not having the time to do so. As much as I enjoy my job, I will retire one day and hope to travel many places, enjoy family and friends (esp. my granddaughter and two grandsons), and read more than a couple of pages before falling asleep. I hope to see you often at the library and to help you experience all that Rawlins Library has to offer. We are much more than books and would appreciate any suggestions you might have to help us meet all future needs. 9.
