F. S. Brainard & Co.: Cello Setup with WinGPS 2 Install Program On Computer SETUP LOGGER 1) Setup.exe and WinGPS Installer.msi should be in the same directory on your computer. 2) Run Setup.exe. 3) Change COM port as necessary (in Options under Tools in the menubar). Set Initial comms rate = 1200; Max comms rate = 9600; Logger detection = Manual. 4) Should you need to change the configuration file for your logger, you may need to change the Configuration files directory to the Config directory under Programs. 1. Register SIM Card (if new SIM) Cello SIM cards must be modified before they will send messages. With SIM card in Cello and Cello connected to computer: 1) Close WinGPS so COM port is free 2) Run InitializeSIM_ver2.bat (in the InitializeSIM folder). 3) Follow instructions on screen 2. Configure Logger (only if necessary) (only if adding/subtracting channels or corrupt notepad) 1) In the menubar under Logger, press "Configure". 2) Select directory, then config file (*.cfg). To understand file names, see NamingFiles.txt IMPORTANT: Whenever you reconfigure a Cello, certain Dialout Settings (#6) are automatically reset to their default values. Check and, if necessary, reenter values for: (a) Dial-Out Time, and (b) Send Index. 3. Verify Cello Time ( General Tab) Cello uses the cellular network to automatically adjust its internal clock to the nearest minutes and seconds. However, hour must be set by user. To set clock to some other time besides the computer time (e.g., to compensate for daylight savings), temporarily change your computer clock before starting WinGPS. To sync Cello clock to PC time, press "Set Clock. 4. Enter Site Name And PMAC ID ( General Tab ) 1) Enter Site Name of own choice (Site Number is optional). 2) Enter 4 or 5 digit PMAC ID. Must be unique. 5. Enter Channel Information And Test Input ( Channels Tab ) For each channel, select the channel and press Edit Channel. The program will remind you to update the logger when done. 1) Enter a Channel Name to identify the Cello inputs. 2) Enter Scale Factor + space + Units. The Scale Factor is the volume per pulse (if pulse input) or per least significant register wheel digit (if encoder input). Make sure there is a space between the scale factor and unit of measure. 3) If necessary, change the logging Interval ( Rate ) for each channel. For USA encoder/ pulse loggers, rates must be same as timebase. ( Rate = logging interval or Debounce period. Timebase = lowest common denominator of all Rates.) 4) To test the channel input, press Live Input.
F. S. Brainard & Co.: Cello Setup with WinGPS 3 5) Zero the pressure value if necessary: (a) Confirm Cello is not logging; (b) Remove any plastic protective sheath over pressure connector; (c) Disconnect from any line pressure; (d) Press Edit Value and enter 0. 6) If using alarms, enable Threshold and set as desired. 6. Enter Dialout Settings ( Remote Comms Tab) 1) Click "Operate modem every to enable dialout. 2) Set time to send data. 3) Select frequency. Usually this is every day in the early morning. (In rare cases of dialing out more than once per day, select Send data sub-daily every and sync to regular dialout time.) 4) If encoder, click Send index (this is the register reading). 5) Enter dialout number after General SMS to. Ignore other Dialout numbers. DIAL-OUT NUMBER: General SMS to: is the dial-out number. The Meter-Master web service phone number for all AT&T SIM cards is the four-digit short-code: 7413 (without quotes). If you have your own base station, use the phone number of SIM card in your host computer s modem. 7. Start Logging ( General Tab) Start logging also causes Cello to send out setup info. RS232 connection is briefly cut off. 1) Press Start Logging. 2) You can monitor the connection to the cellular network if desired to confirm that the Cello is connecting to the cellular network and sending data.
F. S. Brainard & Co.: Cello Setup with WinGPS 4 Signal Strength and SIM Card Tests OTHER TASKS Check connection to network, signal strength, and SIM registration. 1) If currently communicating with the Cello (the green connection banner shows at the bottom of the window), click the banner to disconnect. 2) In the menubar, go to: Tools Terminal. 3) Right-click anywhere on the screen and select Wake GSM Modem (or press Shift-F1). 4) See if registers on network. Should connect in <50 seconds. 5) Check if Message Reserve and Update show unlimited. If not, register the SIM card (see #1 above). 6) The signal strength of various wireless towers displays in columns. With Cello in its final location (i.e., vault closed), a signal strength over 14 is fine; one below 10 is inadequate. Between 10 and 14, the Cello may work fine, intermittently, or not at all depending on variations in tower signal and other factors. Enclosing in a vault can subtract from 10 to 20 off signal strengths. 7) To exit: Press F9. You may have to wait one or two minutes before the process shuts down and you are able to connect to the Cello again. View Cello Log (for troubleshooting) In the WinGPS menubar, select: Logger GSM View Error Log. (See Cello Installation and Troubleshooting instructions for common error messages.) Send Setup Info And Monitor Outgoing Data (for troubleshooting) Starting the logger or changing the site information causes the Cello to send its settings to the base station. When the logger is started with WinGPS, the terminal screen automatically comes up showing the communication over the cellular network. To make the Cello send setup info without stopping the recording in WinGPS: 1) Change any site setting (e.g., site name), then change it back. 2) Click Save Changes to write the setup info to the Cello. This will prompt the Cello to send out the setup information. 3) Click the green connection banner at the bottom of the screen to disconnect communication with the logger. 4) In the menubar, go to: Tools Terminal. 5) Right-click anywhere on the screen and select Rate 9600 bps (or press F5). 6) Within a couple of minutes, the logger will connect to the network and send out its settings. When sending settings and looking at exact communication ( Monitor option), you should first see a lot of Errors, then a number of blocks of data of 90-160 characters in length, then a sign off. If a block of data does not transmit properly, there will be an error message followed immediately by one retry. If that fails, the Cello will end the transmission and try again two minutes later, then one last time two minutes after that. If all three efforts fail, it will wait until the next scheduled transmission before trying again. Manually Upload Recent Data You can cause the Cello to send its most recent data to the host computer. In the WinGPS menubar, select: Logger "GSM" "Send Latest Data." Download ( Read ) Data In the WinGPS menubar, select: Logger Read Data. View Modem and SIM Info (e.g., modem IMEI and serial numbers) Same as Signal Strength and SIM Card Tests above: Tools Terminal Wake GSM Modem.
