Audition information Reading: There will be a reading of the play at the Theatre on Tues 16 Feb at 7.30pm. All are welcome whether you plan to audition or not. However, attending this reading would be an advantage. Please contact the director if you intend to audition but are unavailable on this evening. Synopsis Feeling lost and unsettled in the shifting social currents of post-ww1 London, two women rent a villa in Italy. They recruit two other very different women to share the costs. Having left their husbands behind, and now in the Tuscan light and warmth, these women rediscover themselves in ways they could never have imagined. Roles available: 5 Females, 3 Males Character Description Stage Age Lotty (female) Lotty is married to a man who doesn't like to spend money therefore she has to be careful with the housekeeping and when she buys clothes for herself. At the beginning of the play she feels restless feeling there is more to life than she is experiencing. With no children she has little to occupy her except her house wifely duties. She has great intuition about what the future holds and is the first to succumb to the Tuscan beauty and tranquility. Late 20s-30s Mellersh (male) Rose (female) Frederick (male) Lady Caroline (female) Mr Wilding (male) Mrs Graves (female) A solicitor, Mellersh is frugal not wishing to spend money on unnecessary things. He would like Lotte to attend his social business commitments with him but does not worry that she doesn't. He expects her to be the 'little housewife' at home. Rose is a religious woman who attends church regularly and takes Sunday School. She and her husband lost a child. She loves her husband who was an impoverished writer when they married but when he started writing popular novels to support them she strongly disapproved and it changed her feelings towards him. She is a cautious woman who does not realise she still loves her husband until her holiday in Italy. Rose's husband. A writer who is enjoying his new found success and would like Rose to approve of it and share with him the social life it has bought them. Because of the rift in their marriage Frederick has started to stray A socialite. Caroline has been married but her husband died in the war. To stop thinking about her loss she throws herself into the social roundabout becoming 'one of the bright young things'. Being very beautiful she is more than popular with the opposite sex but when the play opens she is beginning to bore of the social roundabout and young men falling at her feet. Wilding is an artist and owns the castle in Tuscany which he rents out when he's not residing there. He has served in the war and seems to be a lonely person. He probably lost many friends in WW1. A widow, Mrs Graves is a very lonely old lady. She lives in the past and the loss of her husband and her friends and made her somewhat bitter. Constanza Italian housekeeper, doubling as maids in Act 1. (female) DIRECTOR S NOTES: Act I is dogged with depression that the English winter often brings. Added to this is the effect the war had on the country. Lotte, with her tiny speck of hope must lead the cast through a path to the ultimate scene where the promise of sun shines in front of us. Act 2 must be magical where one by one the women find their inner selves and their husbands come to realise their wives real worth.
