(4) SWEDEN: COMMENTARY With a population of nine million, Sweden is easily the largest of the Nordic countries, with 40% of the region s screens and 34% of the area s total box office. It is also home to one of the region s cinematic powerhouses, Svensk Filmindustri (the other is Denmark s Nordisk), and has recently established itself as the regional centre for pay-tv and VOD services. But there are more than a few signs of stagnation in the Swedish film sector. The number of screens has dropped by almost 8% over the five years surveyed (Sweden now has the second lowest screens-per-capita ratio in Scandinavia), with both box office and admissions largely stagnant over the same period. Having increased slightly between 2010 and 2012, the other figures notably visits to the cinema have also begun to slip. Sweden s status as northern European cinema s cultural and economic powerhouse declined internationally decades ago, and it looks as though the home market might be beginning to slip, too. Few European arthouse films penetrate much beyond the metropolitan centres of Stockholm, Göteborg and Malmö, which have traditionally been arthouse friendly. But where Sweden is emerging as a somewhat more significant player is on the home entertainment market. It is the home base for such pan- Scandinavian giants as C More Entertainment (formerly Canal+ Sweden), Filmnet, Headweb and Voddler; as a result, it dominates the Nordic pay-tv and VOD 11 Market Study Sweden 2010-2014, Oct 2015, by Split Screen for German Films

business, with the local audience for the latter doubling in size over each of the past two years. Swedes appear more ready to embrace home entertainment rather than going out, at any rate by comparison with other European countries: spending on DVD and Blu-Ray is double that on cinema tickets. Thus, as the figures above indicate, DVD is still a force to be reckoned with, while VOD is just beginning to make a significant impact on the home market. Indeed, to square the circle, the slow decline in the theatrical business and the gradual rise of digital home entertainment is part of the same phenomenon. The next few years will tell whether Sweden will be the first European nation to enter the post-theatrical era. (5) GERMAN FILMS IN SWEDEN Sweden may be the largest of the Nordic markets, but it releases proportionally a smaller number of German films than its neighbours: 31 over the five years surveyed, or an average of just over six a year. What is more, almost a quarter of the tickets sold were to the latest German-produced episode in the PETTERSSON & FINDUS franchise, easily the most successful German film of the period. The rest of the releases were dominated by English-language movies (198,460 admissions), children s films (167,904), arthouse (79,467) and German stories (17,806). If PETTERSSON & FINDUS was classified under children s rather than local interest, kid flicks would be by far the largest category. The 31 German titles were mainly split between distributors Svensk (the majority), state-owned Folkets Bio, Atlantic Film and NonStop. And, as in far less sophisticated markets than Sweden, it was the mainstream movies which drew the crowds, with only one German-language film making it into the Top 10 or, to put it another way, the top third of German films released in Sweden between 2010 and 2014. The one consolation was that Sweden has some of the highest admission prices in Europe, with an average ticket costing just over EUR 13. As a result, the average revenue for a German film in Sweden between 2010 and 2014 was EUR 204,736; this, however, drops to EUR 164,773 if Pettersson and his friend are taken out of the equation. The charts on the following page show numbers of releases and box office revenue for the key groups identified in the introduction to this Report. 12 Market Study Sweden 2010-2014, Oct 2015, by Split Screen for German Films
