15 (5) SPAIN: THEATRICAL MARKET OVERVIEW, The Spanish film business seems to have weathered the storm of , which saw admissions plunge by over 20% from their 100-plus million tally in 2012, with box office down by 24% over the same period. But there can be no denying that the problem described by some as the death of the arthouse sector has left its mark on the Spanish theatrical market, notably in the closing down of over 500 (mainly arthouse) screens. As a result, Spain has slipped a place in the European pecking order, with Italy overtaking it to claim fourth position after the UK, Germany and France. Cinema admissions, moreover, have been hit by a 250% increase in VAT on cinema tickets (from 8% to 21%). Probably as a result, the territory has largely escaped the trend for an ever-increasing number of weekly theatrical openings, with only 13% more films released in 2016 than in 2010, and with an actual year-on-year drop in the number of openings between 2011 and The balance between US and European titles has remained about the same, although the number of domestic (Spanish) titles has dropped by around 25% by comparison with 2010, accounting for an average market share of just under 20%. Indeed Spanish film production, which used to rely heavily on Spanish television for finance, has been hit hard by the almost complete withdrawal of broadcasters from the film business. All this initially had particular significance for German producers and their sales agents, since Spain was, in the 2000s, a regular outlet for German films, crossover as well as arthouse. But the number of German releases has held quite steady over the latest seven years surveyed, even if they have made little impact on the Spanish box office. In only one year of the seven 2011, which saw the release of THE THREE MUSKETEERS and A DANGEROUS METHOD, selling over 833,000 tickets between them have German films and majority co-productions managed to account for more than 1% of the Spanish theatrical market. Although 2015 saw the largest number of German films released in Spain since 2011 (17), only one of them children s film OOOPS! DIE ARCHE IST WEG made any real impact, totalling 136,000 admissions. The 16 others drew less than half that amount, with 10 of them selling less than 20,000 tickets and five less than 1, was the worst year in a decade for German films in terms of market share, with 12 films between them accounting for a mere 0.17% of tickets sold. 15

16 The German films that appealed most to Spanish audiences between 2010 and 2016 fall into the same three broad categories which can be found in most territories: international films originally made in English (although likely to have been shown dubbed in Spain), which are German only in financial terms: THE THREE MUSKETEERS and A DANGEROUS METHOD in 2011; RESIDENT EVIL: RETRIBUTION in 2012; and DER MEDICUS and CLOUD ATLAS in children s movies which, again, are animated and/or dubbed: HEXE LILLI DIE REISE NACH MANDOLAN, KONFERENZ DER TIERE and WICKIE AUF GROSSER FAHRT in 2011; DIE BIENE MAJA - DER KINOFILM and TARZAN 3D in 2014; OOOPS! DIE ARCHE IST WEG in 2015; and HEIDI in arthouse movies from the higher end of the budget spectrum which centre on major moments in 20th-century history such as WWII and the division and reunification of Germany: DAS WEISSE BAND and SOUL KITCHEN in 2010; HANNAH ARENDT and BARBARA in 2013; ZWEI LEBEN in 2014; PHOENIX and IM LABYRINTH DES SCHWEIGENS in 2015; and DER STAAT GEGEN FRITZ BAUER in A name director Wim Wenders in the case of PINA in 2011 also yields results. Between them, however, the three groups of titles listed above account for three-quarters of Spanish admissions to German films over the period surveyed. Note also the performance of DER MEDICUS, which is the only German movie in the survey to have sold over one million tickets. But, despite the economic conditions, the web is still spread wider for German films in Spain than in most other major European countries (with the exception of France), suggesting that arthouse channels are still open, albeit not flowing as freely as they once did. Indeed, of the 94 German films released in the seven-year period as a whole, 60 of them around two thirds sold less than 20,000 tickets. The distributors who acquired the most films from were Flins & Piniculas (14 titles); Karma Films (11); Golem Distribución (nine); and Paycom Multimedia (seven). Acquisitions as a whole were not restricted to Cannes and Berlin, with pick-ups made through regular contact or at smaller festivals or commercial events like the American Film Market. In this respect at least, the Spanish distribution business remains on its traditional track. And the cultural profile of German films remains relatively high in Spain, even if the economic prospects for their producers (and distributors) are more modest than they were. 16

17 (6) SPAIN: GERMAN FILMS ON TELEVISION OVERVIEW Spanish television is as diversified as any in Europe, with a wide range of channels covering the usual spectrum, from news and family viewing to movies and sport (with the latter list including channels dedicated to football giants Real Madrid and Barcelona). The first chart below indicates the breakdown of channels available by cable, satellite and IPTV delivery by cable-and-satellite giant Movistar+. Spain: Movistar+ TV Channels by Content General/News Sports Children and Family Entertainment Lifestyle Movies Music Regional Foreign The second chart shows the nationality of titles available on DCine. Available in the Movistar package, DCine is a partially curated 24-hours-aday movie channel showing recent independent US movies, some older films, one or two blockbusters and a smattering of films from elsewhere in Europe. Its pitch is box-office hits in a place where classic cinema never dies. One German film was programmed: the 1984 children s adventure story DIE UNENDLICHE GESCHICHTE. 17
