(4) UK & IRELAND: COMMENTARY While the Republic of Ireland has been an independent country since 1923, theatrical distributors continue to regard it as part of the UK market and all boxoffice data contains Irish receipts as well as those from the UK. Several of the major US companies maintain separate Irish operations and there are a small number of independent local distributors. A very few titles are released in Ireland only STELLA DAYS, released by Eclipse in 2012 is an example; DER MONDMANN, released by Wildcard in 2013 is another but the vast majority of films are released day-and-date in the UK and Ireland; and Irish admissions are not recorded separately. This historical quirk apart, the UK is a sophisticated and mature market that has changed dramatically over the past 20 years. Having operated for three quarters of a century as an offshore outlet for Hollywood, the UK market has embraced arthouse releases in the past decade, with the number of European openings doubling in the past five years. Screens have been modernised and new ones built (the screen count rose by 6.5% between 2010 and 2014), but other indicators have remained much the same, although box office, boosted by increased ticket prices especially for 3D and super-especially for 3D in the West End, where tickets can cost EUR 25 has risen by 32% over the period surveyed. The UK is characterised increasingly by a number of boutique distributors and a heavy release schedule, with an average of 14 films opening each week. In 2014, 117 different distributors (down from a 2013 high of 139) released films in the UK more than in either France or Germany, markets which wrote the rules for micro-distributors. Many of the smaller companies use a one-week theatrical window as a way of boosting VOD sales. Inevitably, few of the 712 films released in 2014 made much impact at the box office and, in commercial terms, the market remains Hollywood-dominated. Domestic films claim up to a 25% market share, but this has largely to do with one s interpretation of the word domestic, since Hollywood films produced and registered in the UK for tax purposes are counted as British. Independent British films average out annually at around 15-16%. As suggested above, the VOD market is highly developed. The UK is a major success story for Netflix, and the operator has responded by diversifying what was initially a heavily English-language line-up (see above). A number of other distributors have moved into the digital market, notably Curzon (owner of veteran theatrical exhibitor/distributor Artificial Eye), which regularly releases titles day-and-date in its London cinemas and on its VOD site. The British Film Institute also has a curated VOD site, BFI Player, which makes limited-market documentaries and foreign-language films available to cinéphiles, and there are a number of other similar sites. All in all, then, the UK has gone from being a very traditional, Hollywood-oriented theatrical territory to a much more open market, with multiple opportunities for adventurous digital distribution, albeit still on a scale which means limited returns to the producer. The potential is there, however, and anyone interested in how the delivery of films to audiences is likely to develop over the next half-decade would do well to keep an eye on the UK. 14 Market Study UK & Ireland 2010-2014, Oct 2015, by Split Screen for German Films

(5) GERMAN FILMS IN THE UK & IRELAND All the developments in and opportunities offered by the UK market have not been of much benefit to German-speaking films: the films which show up in the Top 10 German titles between 2010 and 2014 are the same English-language commercial films that have shown up in similar territories during the same period: the solid foundations laid by hits such as DAS LEBEN DER ANDEREN and DER UNTERGANG seem to have evaporated, and the market shares indicated in the second (box office) chart below show the lion s share going to mainstream English-language movies and children s films. Indeed, one of the more depressing things about the annual statistics shown in 2 (b) above is the way the figures drop off from hundreds of thousands of admissions to low five figures once the mainstream movies have been accounted for. LORE (45,915 admissions) and BARBARA (28,402) are with the exception of the multilingual PINA the only ones to sell more than 20,000 tickets. Veteran Artificial Eye and boutique newcomer Soda Pictures were the most active in buying German titles over the period surveyed, and Netflix has also recently added a dozen German titles to its site. But overall, German films in whatever language only take more than 0.5% of the UK market in one year of the five, 2011, thanks mainly to the THREE MUSKETEERS, and then by just 0.01%. To set things in perspective, MUSKETEERS, by far the most successful German film in the UK over the period surveyed, was the 76th most successful film of 2011. One area of the UK market that seems to be prospering, however, is new-print re-releases of classic films in the current case titles from the New German Cinema movement, with three movies by Werner Herzog selling over 15,000 tickets between them. Indeed, along with France, the UK is the only market in which classic re-releases have found a niche. To sum up, with 57 films released over the five-year period, the UK remains in the top bracket of European territories in terms of the number of German films made available to audiences, and registers about the same overall admissions as Poland. The charts below show numbers of releases and box office revenue for the key groups identified in the introduction to this Report. 15 Market Study UK & Ireland 2010-2014, Oct 2015, by Split Screen for German Films
