RULES OF THE 1ST KAROL SZYMANOWSKI INTERNATIONAL MUSIC COMPETITION The Rules of the 1st Karol Szymanowski International Music Competition contain: I. Specific rules of the 1st Karol Szymanowski International Music Competition in the disciplines of piano, violin, voice and string quartet; II. Specific rules of the 1st Karol Szymanowski International Music Competition in the discipline of composition; III. Final provisions. The Organiser of the Competition is Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice, hereinafter called Organiser. I. Specific rules of the 1st Karol Szymanowski International Music Competition in the disciplines of piano, violin, voice and string quartet Article I 1. The Competition is open to professional-level performers who meet the following age requirements: a) instrumentalists: 17 32 years of age; b) singers: 20 32 years of age for women and 20 35 years of age for men; c) string quartet: the sum of the ages of all quartet members cannot exceed 120 years of age, and no member of the ensemble can be older than 35. 2. The age of participants is determined as of the first day of the Competition, that is, 10 September 2018. 3. Each participant can take part in only one discipline. Article II The Jury for each discipline of the Competition will consist of distinguished musicians from Poland and abroad. The composition of the Jury will be announced not later than five months before the opening of the Competition. Article III 1. To enter the Competition, complete application documents must be submitted by 31 May 2018 (see Article IV paragraph 1 of the Rules). 2. The Organiser reserves the right to select participants on the basis of the DVD materials received (see Article IV paragraph 1 point f) of the Rules). Article IV 1. the application form available on the Competition s website, printed, correctly completed and signed by hand by the candidate for the Competition; b) a short bio note (up to approximately half an A4 sheet, i.e., about 1000 characters); c) a copy of an official document to confirm the date of birth (identity card, passport); d) three current photographs, including at least one portrait photo, to be used in Competition publications (digital image 300 1200 dpi, accepted formats: jpg, gif, bmp, jpeg); e) two letters of recommendation (by music pedagogues or outstanding music personalities); f) a video recording; detailed guidelines regarding the repertoire for each discipline are included in the Annexes to the Rules, as indicated in I. Article VI paragraph 14; g) detailed repertoire for particular stages of the Competition, including the key of the pieces, their parts and their duration; 1

h) a proof of payment of the application fee of 100 Euro (per person), or its equivalent in PLN (at the average NBP exchange rate as of the day of payment), to the Organiser s account: POLISH NATIONAL RADIO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA IN KATOWICE BANK GOSPODARSTWA KRAJOWEGO IBAN: PL53 1130 1091 0003 9112 5320 0001 SWIFT/BIC: GOSKPLPW The full name of the candidate for the Competition should be indicated in the title of the payment, together with the following information: The First Karol Szymanowski International Music Competition discipline The application fee is non-refundable; the costs of wire transfer are borne by the payer. The application form and all correspondence related to the participation in the Competition should be in Polish or in English, or translated into one of these two languages. An incomplete application, a defective DVD file, or failure to meet the above requirement may result in the rejection of the application. The Organiser does not return the submitted documents and materials, which become the Organiser s property. 2. The application for the Competition should be submitted to the Organiser, by mail or personally, to the following address: Narodowa Orkiestra Symfoniczna Polskiego Radia z siedzibą w Katowicach plac Wojciecha Kilara 1 40 202 Katowice, Polska The application should be submitted to the Organiser by 31 May 2018 (if sent by traditional mail, the date of the postmark is considered the submission date). Upon receipt of the complete application, the Organiser will confirm that the application for the Competition has been received. 3. By submitting the application for the Competition, the candidate accepts these Rules. The notification of receipt of the candidate s application means that an agreement has been concluded between the Organiser and the candidate concerning matters provided for in these Rules. Article V 1. For the Competition, the Committee will accept up to 48 pianists, 48 violinists, 48 singers and 12 string quartets. 2. The Organiser reserves the right to change the limits specified in paragraph 1. 3. The list of performers / ensembles accepted for the Competition will be made public on the Organiser s website by 30 June 2018. Article VI 1. The Organiser, in cooperation with the Karol Szymanowski Academy of Music in Katowice, will make instruments (pianos) and practice rooms available to the participants for the time of the Competition. 2. Participants will be provided an opportunity to play on the competition instruments (pianos) before their contest performance at the time determined by the Organiser. The participant may change the instrument (piano) at any time, but an additional rehearsal with the instrument is only possible before the third stage of the competition (the final) begins. 3. The order of contest performances will be determined by a public draw on 9 September 2018. 4. For organisation and programme related reasons, the Organiser has the right to change the order of performances scheduled for the same day. In the event of a participant s illness, confirmed by the Competition s medical service, the participant may be permitted to perform outside the schedule, at the end of the auditions. 5. Contest performances will be open to the public and held in two stages followed by the final. 2

6. Up to 12 pianists, 12 violinists, 24 singers and 9 string quartets will pass to the second stage of the Competition; up to 6 pianists, 6 violinists, 6 singers and 6 string quartets will pass to the final stage. 7. In the first and second stages of the Competition, the violinists and singers will be accompanied by a chamber pianist. 8. The chamber pianist will be present during Competition auditions. 9. During the Competition, a participant may perform with his/her own pianist. The Organiser should be notified of this arrangement in the Competition application form. The travel and accommodation costs of the pianist are covered by the participant. 10. Before each stage of the Competition, participants are entitled to one rehearsal with the pianist (the competition pianist or their own pianist). 11. In the final stage of the Competition (with the exception of the discipline of string quartet), participants will perform with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice. 12. Before the final stage of the Competition, participants will have one rehearsal with the Orchestra. 13. The time and order of rehearsals before all stages of the Competition will be determined by a draw. The participants will be promptly notified of the results of the draw. 14. The Competition repertoire is stated in the Annex to these Rules: for the discipline of piano Annex 1 to the Rules; for the discipline of violin Annex 2 to the Rules; for the discipline of string quartet Annex 3 to the Rules; and for the discipline of voice Annex 4 to the Rules. 15. Except for the discipline of string quartet, the Competition repertoire must be played from memory. Contestants in the discipline of piano and violin may be granted permission to play part of the repertoire from the score only in cases specified in Annex 1 and Annex 2 to the Rules, as indicated in paragraph 14. All necessary scores must be obtained and brought by the participant. By entering the Competition, the participant guarantees that the music scores that s/he intends to use are legal. 16. The Competition Office should be notified in writing of all changes to the Competition repertoire by 31 July 2018. Article VII 1. The Organiser does not assist Competition participants in obtaining visas. Upon request, the Competition Office will provide a note confirming that the participant has been accepted for the Competition. 2. Participants should have health insurance coverage for the duration of their stay in Poland for the time of the Competition. Insurance of the participant s instrument is the responsibility of the participant. 3. The Organiser will cover the accommodation costs of: the participants accepted for the second stage of the Competition, for the time of the second stage; and the participants accepted for the third stage of the Competition, from 10 September to 24 September 2018 provided they accept accommodation at the location recommended by the Organiser. Article VIII 1. The following main prizes will be awarded to the top finalists in each of the disciplines of the Competition: Soloist disciplines: 1st prize 25 000 2nd prize 18 000 3rd prize 10 000 The discipline of string quartet: 1st prize 38 000 2nd prize 26 000 3rd prize 14 000 3

The main prize winners are awarded the title of Laureate of the First Karol Szymanowski International Music Competition. 2. Other finalists in the disciplines may be awarded distinctions by the Competition Jury; the number of distinction awarded and their amount are at the Jury s discretion. Irrespective of the Jury s decision, all finalists receive diplomas. 3. Apart from the prizes and distinctions above, the following special prizes are planned: special prize for the best performance of a work by Karol Szymanowski 6 000 in the disciplines of piano, violin and voice; and 10 000 in the discipline of string quartet; distinction for the best chamber pianist (in the disciplines of voice and violin) 2000 4. The sums specified above are subject to applicable taxes, as required by law. Article IX 1. The decision to award the main prizes, distinctions and special prizes is made by the Competition Jury for each of the disciplines. 2. The Jury has the right to change the number of main prizes and their classification provided that the total amount of money for main prizes and distinctions is not increased and that the amounts of individual main prizes and distinctions remain unchanged. 3. The Jury has the right not to award individual main prizes or special prizes in particular disciplines. 4. The Jury reserves the right to award extra-statutory prizes in particular disciplines. 5. All decisions made by the Jury are final and not subject to appeal. 6. Competition results will be made public after the final stage auditions are completed and following the Jury s deliberations on 22 September 2018. 7. The presentation ceremony of the winners of main prizes, special prizes and distinctions will be held on 23 September 2018 Article X 1. All laureates are required to appear in the concert of laureates without remunera tion. 2. The programme of the concert of laureates will be determined by the Organiser, in consultation with the Presidents of the Jury for particular disciplines and the laureates. The laureates will be required to perform the programme as determined by the Organiser. 3. An unexcused absence from the concert of laureates means that the laureate gives up the prize money. Article XI 1. Each participant in the Competition: a) grants the Organiser permission to make audio and video recordings of his/her performances in the Competition and in the concert of laureates and allows Polish Radio through the agency of the Organiser to use, and dispose the fixed recording in its entirety or in part, and without any time limit, for radio dissemination in the following fields of operation: registration of the performance by digital audio technique, multiple copying of the recording on audio carriers for broadcasting purposes only, multiple broadcasting by ground stations and via satellite, gratuitous exchange of the recording with other radio organisations within the framework of EBU (European Broadcasting Union) internet broadcasting, b) grants the Organiser permission to make audio and video recordings of his/her image, statements made and interviews given during the Competition and the concert of laureates, or relating to the Competition or the concert of laureates; transfers to the Organiser all economic rights to such statements and interviews; and permits the Organiser to disseminate his/her image recorded in connection with his/her participation in the Competition and the concert of laureates; c) transfers to the Organiser an exclusive, temporally and territorially unlimited right to permit to exercise derivative copyright to the works specified in point b) above; in particular, to dispose of and use adaptations of the works, 4

including translations into other languages; the participant also undertakes that s/he will not take any action limiting this right in the future; d) authorises the Organiser to execute its personal rights with respect to the works and performances mentioned in points a) and b) above, and undertakes not to exercise his/her personal rights in a way that would restrict the Organiser in the exercise of its rights acquired in accordance with the provisions specified in this Article; e) grants the Organiser permission to use his/her performances, interviews, statements and image, in full or in any part of its choice, and to produce adaptations, abridged versions, alterations and translations; and declares that such use of them will not be seen as damaging his/her good name; the participant also gives consent to mark his/ her performances, statements, interviews and images specified in points a) and b) above with his/her first and last name. 2. The transfer and granting of the rights (including permissions) specified in paragraph 1 of this Article, is not limited in time or space and covers all areas of exploitation known at the time of making these Rules public, in particular: a) fixing, reproduction (including transfer into the memory of a computer or another device) and producing copies with the use of any technology available, including printing, reprography or mag-netic recording and digital technology b) trading of the original and its copies produced according to point a) above offering for sale, lending, leasing and renting; c) disseminating in a way other than specified in point b) above - public performance, displaying, displaying, reproducing and broadcasting and reemitting, as well as making the work publicly available, so that everyone can have access to it in a place and time chosen by them; d) producing foreign-language versions. 3. The transfer and granting of the rights (including permissions) specified in this Article takes effect as soon as the performances, statements and interviews are scheduled and does not involve remuneration. If it is possible under the law, the participant relinquishes his/her rights to royalties from Internet, television and radio broadcasts of his/her performances, statements and interviews specified in paragraph 1 of this Article. 4. Within the scope of the rights acquired under these Rules, the Organiser is fully authorised to transfer these rights to other parties and to grant licenses and further permissions. The participant is not entitled to any additional remuneration for the above. II. Specific rules of the 1st Karol Szymanowski International Music Competition in the discipline of composition Article I 1. The subject of the Competition is a composition for a full symphonic orchestra. The maximum instrumentation (configuration of choice): 3 flauti (3. muta in fl picc.), 3 oboe (3. muta in cr.ing.), 3 clarinetti (3. muta in cl.b.), 3 fagotti (3. muta in cfg), 4 corni - 3 trombe, 3 tromboni, tuba, batteria (4 esecutori), arpa, pianoforte (celesta), archi (16-14-12-10-8) 2. The organiser will accept compositions with the participation of soloists-singers (up to four voices) and/or soloists-instrumentalists (up to four instruments) and/or a choir. 3. The Competition is open to composers of any nationality and without any age restrictions 4. Each participant may submit more than one scores. Article II 1. Duration of the composition: strictly from 10 minutes to 20 minutes. 2. The following compositions are excluded from the Competition: published, in whole or in part, or in the course of publication, awarded in other competitions 5

Article III 1. The scores should be submitted anonymously by 16.08.2018 (as per postmark) to the following address: Narodowa Orkiestra Symfoniczna Polskiego Radia z siedzibą w Katowicach plac Wojciecha Kilara 1 40 202 Katowice with the annotation: The 1st Karol Szymanowski International Music Competition discipline: composition. 2. The scores should be submitted anonymously and marked with an emblem. The scores with the author s name and/or surname will be disqualified. 3. Two copies of the composition should be sent. 4. The scores may be hand-written or computer-generated. There should be a closed envelope attached to the scores, containing the same emblem and the application for the competition: a) the application form available on the Competition s website, printed, correctly completed and signed by hand by the candidate for the Competition; b) a short bio note (up to approximately half an A4 sheet, i.e., about 1000 characters); c) three current photographs, including at least one portrait photo, to be used in Competition publications (digital image 300 1200 dpi, accepted formats: jpg, gif, bmp, jpeg); d) a proof of payment of the application fee of 50 Euro, or its equivalent in PLN (at the average NBP exchange rate as of the day of payment), to the Organiser s account: POLISH NATIONAL RADIO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA IN KATOWICE BANK GOSPODARSTWA KRAJOWEGO IBAN: PL53 1130 1091 0003 9112 5320 0001 SWIFT/BIC: GOSKPLPW The full name of the candidate for the Competition should be indicated in the title of the payment, together with the following information: The First Karol Szymanowski International Music Competition discipline of composition The application fee is non-refundable; the costs of wire transfer are borne by the payer. The amount of the fee does not depend on the number of submitted compositions. 5. By submitting the application for the Competition, the candidate accepts these Rules. The notification of receipt of the candidate s application means that an agreement has been concluded between the Organiser and the candidate concerning matters provided for in these Rules. 6. The scores may be returned at the express request of the competitor, cash on delivery. 7. Competition results will be made public after on 23 September 2018. Article IV 1. The following prizes will be awarded for three best compositions: 1st prize 9 000 2nd prize 6 000 3rd prize 3 000 The organiser undertakes to organise performances of all awarded works. The dates and places of the performances will be subject to separate agreements with the authors of the awarded compositions. 2. The sums specified above are subject to applicable taxes, as required by law. 3. The Jury has the right to change the number of main prizes and their classification provided that the total amount of money for main prizes and distinctions is not increased. 4. The Jury has the right not to award individual main prizes. 5. All decisions made by the Jury are final and not subject to appeal. 6

Article V 1. The scores not complying with the Rules will not be considered by the Jury. 2. The scores of the awarded works, necessary for the performance, shall be prepared by the composers at their own expense and sent to the Organiser s address at the laetst 2 months prior to the performance referred to in IV.1 3. The composers of the awarded compositions grant the Polish Radio through the agency of the Organiser an exclusive permission to use, and dispose the fixed recordings specified in Article 4 point 1 without any time limit, for radio dissemination in the following fields of operation: registration of the performance by digital audio technique, multiple copying of the recording on audio carriers for broadcasting purposes only, broadcasting and time-deferred broadcasting multiple broadcasting by ground stations and via satellite, gratuitous exchange of the recording with other radio organisations within the framework of EBU (European Broadcasting Union) internet broadcasting public performance. Polish Radio has the right to use the recording of the work (in whole or in part) in order to advertise the work and in production of educational, archival or monographic radio programmes concerning the work III. Article 1 By entering the Competition, the candidate accepts these Rules. Article 2 The Organiser reserves the right to change the shcedule of the Competition should any circumstances appear that could not be predicted prior to its announcement, including incidents of force majeure, or the impossibility to continue the Competition in the manner stipulated in the Rules. Article 3 In all matters beyond the competence of the Jury, decisions will be made by the Director of the Competition. The decisions of the Director of the Competition are final and not subject to appeal. Article 4 1. All doubts regarding the provisions of these Rules will be resolved on the basis of their Polish language version. 2. In any matters not regulated by these Rules, the provisions of the Polish law shall apply. 3. Any possible legal disputes shall be settled by a Polish court having jurisdiction over the registered office of the Organiser. 7
