1 1 RULES AND REGULATIONS We are pleased to offer an opportunity for young pianists to compete and showcase their pianistic artistry to the Indianapolis community and surrounding areas as well as take masterclasses and private lessons from world renowned pedagogues. The Carmel Klavier International Piano Competition is positioned to become a significant source of music education and advancement for young piano talents worldwide, providing them with evaluation by a distinguished panel of international judges and the opportunity to perform at a world-class facility. DATES: June 27 to July 1, 2018 AGE REQUIREMENTS: Contestants must be at least 5 years old and no older than 18 years old on June 1 st, 2018 (pre-college students only). CONTESTANT ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to young pianists of any nationality. Previous Grand Prize winners may not compete again in the same category. Contestants may apply in one or more following categories (no limit): a) Solo d) Concerto b) Duet e) Contemporary/Featured Composers c) Ensemble (4 hands-2 pianos, 6 hands-1 piano or 2 pianos, 8 hands- 2 pianos) Accompanist for Concerto category may be provided by Carmel Klavier for an additional fee of $100 for Elementary and $150 for Intermediate and Advanced levels (includes one rehearsal and performances times). LEVELS: Carmel Klavier Competition levels are determined by the contestant s age as of June 1 st, Elementary A: (ages up to 7) Elementary B: (ages up to 9) Intermediate A: (ages up to 11) Intermediate B: (ages up to 13) Advanced A: (ages up to 15) Advanced B: (ages up to 18) The competition consists of three rounds for Solo Category: Preliminary, Semifinal, and Final. For all other categories, contestants will proceed to the final round based on the preliminary audition. Contestants are not allowed to play the same repertoire in different categories.
2 2 If a contestant chooses to withdraw from the competition, he/she is asked to notify the competition committee at least 48 hours prior to the beginning of the designated round. Any violation of the rules and regulations by the contestant may result in his/her expulsion from the competition, which is irrevocable. COMPETITIVE ROUNDS: 1. PRELIMINARY AUDITION The adjudication committee will evaluate the contestant s video submission. All videos are to be submitted online or with a YouTube link/links. The video(s) may be recorded within nine months prior to March 18 th, Late fee of $50.00 will apply for the entrees submitted after March 18 th, All applicants will be informed of the jury s decision regarding the preliminary round no later than April 15 th, Semifinalists / Finalists will be invited to participate in the live competition. The Preliminary Audition requirements apply to all levels and categories. Preliminary Repertoire Requirements for Solo category: Two complete contrasting style original piano compositions of the contestant s choice. For Sonata or Sonatina, any movement(s) can be played. Preliminary Repertoire Requirements for Duet category: One duet for one piano / four hands. Original compositions, arrangements, and transcriptions are acceptable. Memorization is not required. Preliminary Repertoire Requirements for Ensemble category: One complete piano ensemble work for one piano-six hands, one piano eight hands, two pianos-four hands, two pianos-six hands, two pianos-eight hands. Original compositions, arrangements, and transcriptions are all acceptable. Memorization is not required. Preliminary Repertoire Requirements for Concerto category: Any movement of a Piano Concerto. Memorization and accompaniment are not required for this round. Excerpts of the concerto may be recorded for the Preliminary Round. Preliminary Repertoire Requirements for Contemporary / Featured Composers category: One complete original piano composition written after Memorization is optional. 3 3 2. SOLO CATEGORY SEMIFINAL LIVE AUDITION The Solo Category Semifinal round will be held June 27 to June 30 th, 2017 and will be open to the general public. Each contestant must appear before the panel of judges at his/her designated time. The order of performances will be determined randomly by the website: Warm up rooms and assigned warm up times will be available to all semifinalists. Solo Category Semifinal Repertoire Requirements: Two complete contrasting style original piano compositions of the contestant s choice within the time limit. Solo Category Semifinal Time Limit: The performance time will be determined by the level entered, and the contestant s performance may be stopped once the time limit is exceeded. Elementary A: Elementary B: Intermediate A: Intermediate B: Advanced A: Advanced B: up to 4 minutes up to 6 minutes up to 8 minutes up to 10 minutes up to 15 minutes up to 20 minutes 3. FINAL LIVE AUDITION The Final round will be open to the general public. Each contestant must appear before the panel of judges at his/her designated time. Warm up rooms and assigned warm up times will be available to all finalists. Additional practice times will be available to all the participants on first come first serve basis at the Center of the Performing Arts and other locations (TBA). A closing award ceremony and winners gala concert will conclude the competition. Final Round Time Limit: The performance time will be determined by the level entered, and the contestant s performance may/may not be stopped once the time limit is exceeded by the judges discretion. Memorization is required. Final Round Repertoire Requirements for Concerto category all levels: Any movement of a piano concerto. Memorization is required. Final Round Repertoire Requirements for Duet category: Two Piano Duets. Memorization is optional. Final Round Repertoire Requirements for Ensemble category all levels: One Piano Ensemble. Memorization is optional. Final Round Repertoire Requirements for Contemporary/Featured Composers category: Two complete original piano compositions by contemporary composers, written after Memorization is required. (Contestants need to provide three copies of the score for the judges.) 4. MASTERCLASSES and PRIVATE LESSONS SERIES As part of our mission to inspire and educate the next generation of classical music lovers and performers, we design and implement a variety of programs focused on students. Masterclasses and private lessons will present young artists with a unique opportunity to engage with and learn from the International Jury Members of Carmel Klavier. Masterclasses and private lessons are available to all the participants of Carmel Klavier and other piano students who do not wish to compete. Masterclasses and private lessons will take place at The Center of the Performing Arts and other local venues in Carmel, IN during the days of the competition from June 27 to July 1, Masterclasses are open to the general public. Private lessons are individual lessons. The students may take up to three master classes or private lessons per day. The fee for each 30 min. master class is $50.00.
5 5 The fee for each 45 min. private lesson is $75.00 AWARDS Grand Prizes in each competitive category by judges discretion Solo Elementary - $500 Solo Intermediate- $750 Concerto Elementary/Intermediate- $500 Solo Advanced - $1000 Concerto Advanced - $1000 Featured composer special award Duet- $500 Ensemble - $500 Contemporary Composers - $500 Monetary awards for all 1 st, 2 nd, 3 rd places and Honorable Mentions. Semifinal medals, certificates and judges comments to all semifinalists who don t proceed to Final Round. ENTRANCE APPLICATION PROCEDURES: By signing the application, participants agree to all terms and regulations of the competition. The application must be completed online. Registration opens on January 1 st, Application deadline: March 18 th, Entrees submitted after March 18 th, 2018 will require an additional $50 late fee. Documents required for Preliminary Round: 1. Completed preliminary application submitted online. 2. A scanned copy of birth certificate or another ID (in pdf / jpg) that serves as proof of the contestant s age and country of residence (if the participant entered the competition previously, this document is not required). 3. An unedited video recording (submitted online or with a YouTube link/links) of contestant s performance of required works. No simplified arrangements will be accepted. 4. A non-refundable $75.00 application fee. For Duet and Ensemble categories, the fee is $40 per person. If more than two partners, the fee is $30 per person.
6 6 Application documents for Semifinal and Final Rounds must be submitted before or on May 1 st, No late submissions will be accepted. 1. Complete semifinal application submitted online. 2. One recent digital photograph (head and shoulders) for publication. 3. A non-refundable $ application fee. For Duet category and Ensemble categories the fee is $60 per person. If more than two partners, the fee is $40 per person. 4. A non-refundable accompanist fee of $ for Elementary level, and $ for Intermediate and Advanced levels to be submitted with your application if accompanist is needed for concerto entry. 5. Information about the composers and their compositions can be found at Prizes are awarded by jurors discretion. JURY All decisions of the jury are final and are not subject to appeal. If performances do not meet the established performance quality criteria for the competition, the jury reserves the right to not award a prize in one or all categories. The jury reserves the right to interrupt any performance exceeding the allotted time limit.
