LORETO NEDLANDS INSTRUMENTAL PROGRAM 2014

INTRODUCTION The Loreto Nedlands Private Instrumental Program aims to develop and nurture instrumental skills, musicianship, and a love and appreciation of the Performing Arts. Learning an instrument is beneficial for children of all ages. It helps to develop concentration and self-discipline through commitment to daily practice and weekly lessons. Co-ordination and motor-skills are enhanced, together with a sense of achievement gained from developing instrumental proficiency and the excitement of sharing the music making experience with others. Loreto Nedlands offers a range of ensemble opportunities to students. Playing in an ensemble creates rewarding music making experiences that can be shared with peers. Currently, our musical ensembles include Junior Choir, Senior Choir, Beethoven Strings, Bach Strings, Junior String Quartet, Senior String Quartet, Rock Band, Jazz Band and Concert Band. Membership to ensembles is through invitation by the Music Co-ordinator. There are many performance opportunities at Loreto Nedlands and students are encouraged to play at School Gatherings, Festivals and Concerts throughout the year. External examinations such as AMEB (Australian Music Examination Board) are also offered. Loreto Nedlands encourages excellence in Music and the Performing Arts. Jennifer Healey Principal

ENROLMENT Parents are required to complete an Enrolment Form for their child. Following the allocation of a Music Tutor and lesson day, a Confirmation of Enrolment letter will be forwarded. PARENTAL SUPPORT Parental encouragement is vital for students to progress in an instrumental program. The major role parents play is to help their child establish a regular practice routine, and encourage a positive attitude by praising the child s efforts and achievements. Parents are asked to use the Music Record Book to communicate with the Music Tutor. PUNCTUALITY AND RESPONSIBILITY Students must be punctual for their lessons and arrive with their music books, instrument and music record book on the day of their lesson. Students will be collected from class by the Music Tutor.

MISSED LESSONS & NON ATTENDANCE If a student is unable to attend a lesson, for any reason, notice must be given in advance to the Music Tutor. This can be done via the Music Record Book. Lessons may be made up if missed, provided the student has given the Music Tutor sufficient notice and circumstances allow. Students are asked to advise their Music Tutor as early as possible if a lesson is to be missed due to a class excursion or other school activity. The students and Music Tutors can then coordinate to make up for a missed lesson at a later date. If a student is absent due to sickness, the office must be informed by 8.30am, specific mention is to be made regarding Music Lessons. Failure to do so will result in the lesson being charged. Tutors are NOT required to make up lessons for students who are absent without notice or have forgotten their instrument. If the student intends to be away from school for any length of time, please inform the Music Co-ordinator and Music Tutor in writing for teaching and accounting purposes. WITHDRAWAL FROM LESSONS Should a student wish to discontinue lessons, at least one term s notice in writing is required to both the Music Coordinator and the Music Tutor involved. Failure to give the required notice will result in the full term s fee being charged. PROGRAM FEES The Instrumental Program Fees are $30.60 per lesson. 36 lessons in 2014 19 in Semester 1 17 in Semester 2. A $50 levy is charged towards administration of the program. A $50 fee is charged per semester for students participating in ensembles, bands and orchestra. End of Year workshops - If an accompanist is required, one of the allotted lessons will be divided, resulting in a shorter lesson time along with performance time. ACCOUNTS Music Fees will be billed on the school account each Semester. Lessons will be tallied at the end of the school year. If the student has not received their allotment of 36 lessons, a credit will be processed via the school fee account for eligible lesson credits.

EXAMINATIONS Participation in Music Exams is encouraged as a way of maintaining focus and ensuring development. EXAMS AND FESTIVALS Students participating in exams and festivals will be enrolled in consultation with, and by the Music Tutor/Music Co-ordinator. Parents will be notified of the exam or festival fee and payment must be made by the parent prior to the entry form being submitted. An accompanist, if required, is to be arranged directly between Tutor and Parent, and will be added to the school fee account. ENSEMBLES Students may be invited to join an ensemble when they have reached a required level of proficiency on their instrument. Membership of an ensemble is through invitation by the Music Co-ordinator. Ensembles are conducted by Music Tutors and/or the Music Co-ordinator. The Loreto Nedlands Junior and Senior Choirs are open to all students in Year 1 to Year 6. New members may join a choir throughout the year at the beginning of a new season of repertoire, usually at the beginning of a term. Ensembles offered at Loreto Nedlands include: Junior Choir, Senior Choir, Beethoven Strings, Bach Strings, Junior String Quartet, Senior String Quartet, Rock Band, Jazz Band and Concert Band. MUSIC RECORD BOOK Each student will be issued with a Music Record Book. This is essential for parent communication and setting the work needed to be done for successful home practice. Parents are expected to initial the book every week to indicate that the required amount of practice has been done. Music is chosen by the Music Tutor according to the level of the student. REPORTS Written reports will be available at the end of each semester.
