1 RULES AND REGULATIONS We are pleased to offer an opportunity for young pianists to compete and showcase their pianistic artistry to the Indianapolis community and surrounding areas. The Carmel Debut International Piano Competition and Festival is positioned to become a significant source of music education and advancement for young piano talents worldwide, providing them with evaluation by a distinguished panel of judges and the opportunity to perform at a world-class facility. DATES: June 22 to June 26, 2016 AGE REQUIREMENTS: Competitors must be at least 5 y.o. and no older than age 18 on June 1 st, 2016 (pre-college students only). CONTESTANT ELIGIBILITY: The competition is open to young pianists of any nationality, ages 5-18. Previous Grand Prize winners may not compete in the same category. Contestants may apply in one or more following categories (no limit): a) Solo d) Concerto b) Duet e) Contemporary Composers c) Duo (2 pianos) f) Master classes Accompanist for Concerto category may be provided by Carmel Debut for an additional fee of $100 (includes one 30 min. rehearsal and performance times). LEVELS: Carmel Debut Competition levels are determined by the competitor s age as of June 1 st, 2016) Elementary A: (ages up to 7) Elementary B: (ages up to 9) Intermediate A: (ages up to 11) Intermediate B: (ages up to 13) Advanced A: (ages up to 15) Advanced B: (ages up to 18) The competition consists of three rounds: Preliminary, Semifinal, and Final. If a contestant chooses to withdraw from the competition, he/she is asked to notify the competition committee at least 48 hours before the beginning of the designated round. Any violation of the rules and regulations by the contestant may result in his/her expulsion from the competition, which is irrevocable.
2 THREE COMPETITIVE ROUNDS: 1. PRELIMINARY AUDITION The judging committee will evaluate the contestant s video submission. All videos are to be submitted by February 15 th, 2016 via DVD or YouTube link/links. The videos must not be edited. All applicants will be informed of the jury s decision regarding the preliminary round no later than April 1 st, 2016. Semifinalists will be invited to participate in the live Semifinal round of the competition. The Preliminary Audition requirements apply to all levels. Preliminary Repertoire Requirements for Solo category: Two contrasting style piano compositions of the contestant s choice: at least one must be a complete piano work (Example: one movement of Sonata); the second may another complete work or a collection of shorter works by one composer (example: 2-3 Preludes by Debussy, Suite of Dances). Memorization is not required for this round. Preliminary Repertoire Requirements for Duet category: Two original piano duets or orchestral transcriptions. Memorization is not required for this round. Preliminary Repertoire Requirements for Duo category: One complete original piano duo work or orchestral transcriptions for two pianos four hands. Memorization is not required for this round. Preliminary Repertoire Requirements for Concerto category: A fast movement of a Piano Concerto. Memorization and accompaniment are not required for this round. Preliminary Repertoire Requirements for Contemporary Composers category: Any composition written after 1900 s by DVD or video link. If the contestant proceeds to the semifinal round, he/she will receive the commissioned piece by Indiana Local Composer to be performed at the live semifinal round. The commissioned piece will be e-mailed to the contestant on or before March 1 st, 2016.Memorization is optional for preliminary round.
3 2. SEMIFINAL LIVE AUDITION The Semifinal round will be held on June 22 to June 24, 2016 and will be open to the general public. Each contestant must appear before the panel of judges at his/her designated time. The order of performances will be determined randomly by the website: www.random.com Practice rooms and assigned practice times will be available to all semifinalists. Semifinal Time Limit: The performance time will be determined by the level entered, and the contestant s performance may be stopped once the time limit is exceeded. Solo Duet Concerto Elementary A: up to 3 minutes Elementary Elementary Elementary B: up to 5 minutes up to 6 minutes up to 8 minutes Intermediate A: up to 8 minutes Intermediate Intermediate Intermediate B: up to 10 minutes up to 8 minutes up to 14 minutes Advanced A: up to 15 minutes Advanced Advanced Advanced B: up to 20 minutes up to 12 minutes up to 20 minutes Duo (2 pianos 4 hands) Contemporary Composers (the time limit does not include the commissioned work) Elementary: up to 4 minutes Elementary: up to 4 minutes Intermediate: up to 7 minutes Intermediate: up to 6 minutes Advanced: up to 10 minutes Advanced: up to 8 minutes Semifinal Repertoire Requirements for Solo category: Two contrasting style piano compositions of the contestant s choice: one complete piano work (such as one movement of Sonata); the second work might be a collection of shorter pieces by one composer (such as Preludes, Dances etc.) performed by memory, without repeats. Semifinal Repertoire Requirements for Duo category: One complete original piano duo work or orchestral transcriptions for two pianos four hands. Memorization is optional. 4 3. FINAL LIVE AUDITION The Final round will be held on the last two days of the competition and will be open to the general public. Each contestant must appear before the panel of judges at his/her designated time. The order of performances will be determined randomly by the website: www.random.com Practice rooms and assigned practice times will be available to all finalists. A closing award ceremony and winners concert will conclude the auditions. Final Time Limit: The performance time will be determined by the level entered, and the contestant s performance might be stopped once the time limit is exceeded. Final Round Repertoire Requirements for Contemporary Composers category: Commissioned work from Semifinal round and a work of any living composer of contestant s country. Memorization is optional for the commissioned work.
5 4. MASTER CLASS SERIES As part of our mission to inspire and educate the next generation of classical music lovers and performers, we design and implement a variety of programs focused on children. Master classes will present young artists with a unique opportunity to engage with and learn from the International Jury Members of Carmel Debut. Master classes are available to all the participants of Carmel Debut and other piano students who do not wish to compete. Master classes will take place at The Center of the Performing Arts and Piano Solutions piano store in Carmel, IN during the days of the competition from June 22 to June 26. Master classes are open to the general public. Repertoire selected for the master classes must not include the contestant s competition pieces for their participation in Carmel Debut 2016. The students may take one master class per day. The fee for each 30 min. master class is $50.00; for three or more master classes, $40.00 each. ENTRANCE APPLICATION PROCEDURES: By signing the application, participants agree to all terms and regulations of the competition. The organization committee is not responsible for lost documents. A copy of birth certificate or another ID that serves as a proof of the contestant s age and country of residence. 3. An unedited video recording (DVD) or YouTube link/links of contestant s performance of required works. No simplified arrangements will be accepted. 4. A non-refundable $75.00 application fee submitted with your application, by check, money order or online, payable to Carmel Debut, Inc. For Duet and Duo category, the fees are to be split between duet partners.
6 Application documents for Master Classes Series must be submitted before or on April 1 st, 2016. 1. Completed application for the master classes. 2. A non-refundable master class fee. ($50.00 per single master class, $40.00 per each master class for three to five master classes.) Application documents for Semifinal and Final Rounds must be submitted before or on April 1 st, 2016. 1. Completed semifinal application printed or filled out in bold capital letters. 2. One recent photograph (3 x 5 ) for publication. 3. A non-refundable $100.00 application fee submitted with your application by check or money order, payable to Carmel Debut, Inc. For duet or duo category, the fees are to be split between two duet partners. 4. A non-refundable $100.00 accompaniment fee submitted with your application if accompanist needed for concerto competition. 5. Short biography. If performances do not meet the established performance quality criteria for the competition, the jury reserves the right not to award a prize in one or all categories. The jury reserves the right to interrupt any performance exceeding the allotted time limit.
