Abstract Forest i the City is a soudscae comositio or strig orchestra (5/4/3/2/2), divided ito to cocetric circles cosistig o ier ad outer grous, ad electroics. Satializatio o strig orchestra, loudseakers, ad audiece is a major ocus o Forest i the City, as essetial as dyamics ad orchestratio. The electroics are cotrolled by a lato erormer via sotare created i Max 5, a real-time grahical object rogrammig eviromet or music, that allos the comuter to uctio as a musical istrumet uder the guidace o the coductor. The irst chater deals ith the overvie o acoustic ecology ad soudscae, ad ho Forest i the City is situated ithi the rubric o soudscae comositio. I also discuss the imortace o the aurage, or soud-image, as the sychological imrit o a soudscae o the listeer ad its role i Forest i the City. The secod chater covers methodology, rom the iitial ield recordigs, to the soud documets, to the choice o ial soudscaes to be used i Forest i the City. A quartet, cosistig o oe o each striged istrumet, is laced i a ier circle aroud the coductor. The audiece is seated i a cocetric circle betee these ier ad outer rigs. 1 1.2 Soudscae Music What is Soudscae A soud eviromet reers to the sum total o erceivable souds, the medium i hich they are situated, their locatios ad acigs, their iteractios ith oe aother ad the listeer, ad the circumstaces o the listeer. R. Murray Schaer deies soudscae as The soud eviromet. Techically, ay ortio o the soic eviromet regarded as a ield or study. The term may reer to actual eviromets, or to abstract costructios such as musical comositios ad tae motages, articularly he cosidered as a eviromet. These selectios also had to be comositioally iterestig by icludig both recurrig ad uique oregroud ideas as ell as texturally dieret backgrouds. 2.4 From Soud Documets to Soud aks The audio selectios comrisig the soud documets are i tur urther slit ito idividual soud layers, hich together orm soud baks that ould be used as material or each sectio i order to adat the soudscae or erormace. Aother goal o the rogram is to build i eough cotext sesitivity such that a ide variety o souds ca be made available ithout comlicatig the cotrol scheme. The sotare s rimary urose is to serve as a iteractive lato istrumet or cotrollig the soudscaes o the Edmoto River Valley. I the Edmoto River Valley, soud sigals ca geerally be heard clearly above the oise loor i both atural ad techological situatios. The degree to hich the orest ad the city are reset relative to oe aother are deedet o the time o day as the majority o city-based souds, such as traic ad costructio, are diural i ature. While may aimal souds are also diural, some are octural, ad eather-based souds are ot aected by the time o day. The soudscae teds to be sarse at times, but ca also become somehat saturated, as i the case o the Valley Zoo recordig.
