Each program allows students to explore areas such as performance, technology, theory, auditioning and conducting. (Instrumental Music does not include the study of guitar or piano.) BCPS Magnet Transportation Information: (Southeast Area) Transportation is provided at community pick-up points only for students zoned for Southeast or Northeast high schools, as well as those who would otherwise attend Loch Raven High School. Schedule your appointment online at the BCPS Magnet Programs Web site (http://www.tinyurl.com/bcpsmagnet) or call BCPS Magnet Programs at (443) 809-4127 (NOT BOTH). All applicants will be scheduled for a two hour assessment and interview at Patapsco High School & Center for the Arts, beginning at 9am. Students will be reminded of their appointments during the week prior to the assessment. Applicants must attend the school-based assessment for the program to which they applied. Assessment Prep Night: November 29, 2018 6 p.m. Applicants may choose to come for this optional hour and a half workshop to fine tune their assessment skills. Teachers will be on hand to work with students on technique and repertoire in preparation for the January assessments. Make your reservation no later than November 26, 2018, for the Assessment Prep Night by contacting Trisha Dunn, Patapsco Magnet Coordinator, at 443-809-7127 or PHSCFAmagnet@bcps.org. Unforeseen Illness or Emergency: Parent(s) must inform the school immediately if the applicant cannot attend or complete the scheduled assessment due to an unforeseen illness or emergency. Please be aware that assessments will not be rescheduled without documentation verifying the illness or emergency. Inclement Weather Date: Saturday, January 12, 2019, at the previously scheduled appointment time. Inclement Weather: In the event schools are closed due to inclement weather, weeknight magnet assessments will be postponed. Weekend magnet assessments will be postponed if the snow emergency plan is put into effect or Baltimore County. Postponed assessments will occur on the designated inclement weather date. All emergency closing and cancellation information may be posted on the BCPS automated information line, 443-809-5555. Closings and cancellation announcements may also be made through local media. Directions to Patapsco High School & Center for the Arts From Interstate 695 East Take the Merritt Blvd. Exit, Exit 39, toward Dundalk. Drive approximately 1.5 miles to the intersection of Merritt Blvd. and Wise Ave. Turn left on Wise Ave. Drive approximately 1 mile. The school is on the left side of Wise Ave.

Prior to the Assessment All applicants will be scheduled for an instrumental or vocal assessment, based on the selection marked on the student s application. Applicants to Instrumental Music should be prepared to assessment on one of the instruments listed below. Please note that PHSCFA does not have an instrumental program for guitar or piano. Applicants are encouraged to seek assistance in preparation for the assessment. Your middle school teacher may be your best resource. An Assessment Prep Night is also available (see previous section for details). Instrumental Music Please select one of the following instruments for assessment. Woodwinds Flute/Piccolo Bb, Eb and Bass Clarinet Bassoon Oboe Alto/Tenor/Bari. Sax Brass Trumpet French Horn Trombone Euphonium (Treble or Bass Clef) Tuba Strings Violin Viola Cello Double Bass Percussion Percussion students are required to play the mallets on either a marimba or xylophone, as well as either the snare or the timpani Sight Reading (Instrumental and Vocal) All applicants should be prepared to sight-read a simple exercise to demonstrate their knowledge of melodic and rhythmic music (Vocal) or major and minor scales (Instrumental). Prepared Selections Applicants will be asked to perform: Instrumental: Two prepared selections from the BCPS Middle School Honors music. See Middle School Instrumental Teachers for music. Two major scales should be memorized and performed at quarter note = 72 for strings, and at quarter note = 120 for winds and percussion, one octave in a comfortable range for your instrument, ascending and descending. Winds and Percussion Two Major Scales, which will be selected from Concert F, Bb, Eb. Scales should be performed at Quarter note = 120, at least one octave in a comfortable range. Percussion should perform the same scales with the mallets on either a marimba or xylophone. Vocal: Simple Gifts (without accompaniment) music provided at the end of this assessment guideline Sing We Alleluia music provided at the end of this assessment guideline On the Day of the Assessment The assessment takes about 1 hour. It is the responsibility of the parent(s) to: Ensure that the applicant attends the assessment on the scheduled date and time. Contact the schools if scheduled magnet assessment appointments conflict. Failure to attend an assessment WILL result in disqualification. Registration Information Individual assessment appointments must be scheduled no later than November 22, 2018. Please arrive 15 minutes prior to the scheduled appointment time. Use the Main Entrance at Wise Ave. and Inverness Ave. Students more than 15 minutes late may not be admitted into the assessment. Parents may not stay on-site during the assessment. If the applicant cannot attend or complete the scheduled assessment due to an unforeseen illness or emergency, please contact Patapsco High School and Center for the Arts at 443-809- 7127. Instrumental and Vocal Music Interview (Instrumental and Vocal) Applicants will be interviewed during the assessment. Questions for the interview portion of the assessment will concern why the applicant wants to be part of the magnet, what he/she can offer the program, areas of strength, and leadership skills. Sight Reading (Instrumental and Vocal) All applicants will be asked to sight-read a simple exercise to demonstrate their knowledge of melodic and rhythmic music (Vocal) or major and minor scales (Instrumental). Instrumental Instrumental applicants will be asked to perform: Two prepared selections from the BCPS Middle School Honors music. For a copy of the required musical selections see your middle school instrumental teacher. If you are applying from a private school call Patapsco for a packet (410-887-7060 ext. 256). Two major scales (see Prior to Assessment section of Assessment Guidelines) scales should be memorized and performed at quarter note = 72 for strings, and at quarter note = 120 for winds and percussion, one octave in a comfortable range for your instrument, ascending and descending. Vocal Applicants will vocalize with the teacher to determine vocal range. Please be prepared to sing two solos (music provided below): Simple Gifts (without accompaniment) Sing We Alleluia by Jay Althouse These solos will allow the student to demonstrate their vocal ability and musicianship. For Sing We Alleluia, you may be accompanied by our pianist or bring your own accompanist if you wish. Magnet Application Deadline Friday, November 16, 2018 Applications are available on the BCPS Magnet Programs Web site (www.tinyurl.com/bcpsmagnet) beginning at 12 noon on Monday, September 17, 2018. Applications must be submitted on or before Friday, November 16, 2018. Late applications are not processed. You are encouraged to apply online on the BCPS Magnet Programs Web site (www.tinyurl.com/bcpsmagnet). Online applications may be submitted until 1:00 p.m. on Friday, November 16, 2018.
