DEAR FRIENDS, It has been my hope since the Festival was founded in to present West Side Story, one of the five mega-masterpieces of the American Lyric Stage, in the way it was envisioned by Leonard Bernstein. He imagined it with a philharmonic sound in the pit and the finest dancers, actors and musicians the culmination of the best of everything in the art form of American Musical Theatre. fortune to visit the Winter Garden Theatre in New York City between September,, and June,, it is very unlikely. Until now. Here s another question: How do you justify hiring 0 world-class dancers and 0 instrumentalists for just one of six shows performed in repertory? You can t. You imaginate about how to use these amazing performers to their full extent without killing them off. So we looked to Walt Disney. What is his all-time favorite musical? Mary Poppins. How about having an intimate conversation with the greatest diva and divo of all time in the comfort and splendor of the? Turn back the clock and be part of Maria Callas s Master Class at the Juilliard School in March. There has never been a season like this let s triumph with some toetapping terpsichore! FOUNDING GENERAL DIRECTOR Have you ever witnessed live, on stage, West Side Story given the kind of respect with which Lenny aspired? Unless you had the good
