2 #36 Department of Music, Pittsburg State University Collection, Boxes INTRODUCTION Recital Programs from the Department of Music at Pittsburg State University. The collection also includes some photos of opera productions, high school festivals, as well as photos, recital guest books, and correspondence from Miss Margaret Thunemann s vocal master classes. DONOR INFORMATION Recital programs were donated by the Department of Music at Pittsburg State University and Miss Margaret Thunemann. ORGANIZATIONAL HISTORY The Department of Music was organized in Dr. Walter McCray ( ), the second chairperson for the Music Department, organized the college s annual Music Festival in 1915 which was a week-long event featuring guest soloists, orchestras, and operas. The highlight of each festival was the presentation of Handel s Messiah. In 1920 Dr. Walter McCray organized the Interstate High School Music Contest which brought nationally and internationally known performers and groups to the college. Today, the Department of Music sponsors numerous ensembles: Chorale, University Choir, and Jazz Choir; the Wind Ensemble and Symphonic Band, and Jazz Ensembles; the Symphony Orchestra, Chamber Orchestra, and the Opera Workshop. These organizations, along with soloists and small ensembles from the students and faculty provide numerous recitals and concerts throughout the year. In addition, the university sponsors two outstanding concert/recital series by national and international guest artists, the Solo and Music Chamber Series and the Fisk Organ Recital Series. The annual Jazz Festival brings in national jazz artists and groups each year. SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The Department of Music, Pittsburg State University, Collection consists primarily of recital and concert programs. There are some photos of opera productions, jazz festivals, and photos, correspondence, news clippings, and guest books of Miss Margaret Thunemann s vocal master classes and Solo Vocal Lit classes. For purposes of arrangement and to accommodate future additions to the collection, each series is designated by a letter of the alphabet, A-NNN, and folders in each series are numbered consecutively from one to the end. Each series is arranged in chronological order.
