Franklin Middle School Band Handbook Hello Parent(s)/ Guardian(s) to our fantastic Instrumentalist, Welcome to the Franklin Middle School 7 th and 8 th Bands new school year!!! We at FMS are excited about this coming year, and have many wonderful musical events planned. Over the course of many years, the band program has been huge highlight of the middle school experience for all involved in concerts, school shows, Teen Arts Festivals, and Competition in Allentown P.A. The 7th and 8th Grade Band course at FMS is an EVERYDAY elective and these are the two pinnacle years that every student makes the largest growth in performance, knowledge, and kinesthetic skills. In this document you will find: Band Grading Policy/ Concert Dress Attire information for performances Materials Required for Band Band Practice Logs Due on Google Class Room every Sunday by 9pm. Band Student Information Sheet (emailed before the start of the school year) Video Consent Form (emailed before the start of the school year) Rental Companies information It is important for all students and parents to thoroughly review the information contained in this

packet. Making sure that everyone understands what is expected and allows us to provide an outstanding beginning to our musical journey together. *If your child have not signed up for band do not worry. Please email your child s guidance counselor to request the change and they will graciously do so. The 3 guidance counselors name and emails are listed below. FMS Band Grading Policy Combined equals to 75% of the Marking Period (MP) Grade Participation and Performance(s) 50% (Includes any performance test/ quiz) Behavior 25% Live Performance (Concerts only MP 2&4 40% and remaining section grading scale will adjust) Remaining Below Combined Makes up 25% Home Work 5% Listening Activities 10% Written Assignments 10% Class Participation Students are expected to be respectful to each other, and to all building staff, as well as treat all personal and school property with respect. Students are expected to arrive on time, quietly prepare for class, and follow instructions. All students should be active listeners, well behaved, and make their best effort throughout the class period. Performance Quizzes/ Test Students will be periodically assessed based on their performance. Each assessment will be announced in advance, and will be graded based on the FMS Band Performance Rubric. Quizzes will be based on materials covered in class, and can be made up at the teacher s discretion. Concert Performance Concert attendance is essential for the band to have a successful performance. All students must attend our concerts in December and May/June. The concerts will count as 40% of the instrumentalist 2 nd and 4 th marking period grade. Students may be excused from a performance for the same reason they would be excused from school (severe illness, death in family, emergency, etc.), and will be given an alternate means of assessment in the form of writing. Our concert dates are TBA, dates will be listed on Google Classroom in September. **Concert Dress Attire Required for Concert or any Performance event** Male Instrumentalist Female Instrumentalist 1. Solid White Long Sleeve Dress Shirt 2. Black Dress Pants with Black Belt 3. Black Dress Shoes with Black Socks 4. Tie (Any Color) 1. Solid White Long Sleeve Dress Shirt or Solid White Blouse (no sheer/ see through) 2. Black Dress Pants with Black Belt or Ankle Length Skirt (no slits) 3. Black Dress Shoes (Max 1 inch heel) 4. Instrumentalist can opt for Ankle Length Solid Black Dress in Lieu of #1 and #2 5. No Lip Gloss/ Color Gloss/ Lipstick ^*If the student is not dressed accordingly in concert attire he/ she will be not be allowed to perform in the concert

1. Instrument: Wind Instruments: Materials for FMS BAND Rental companies www.themusicshop.com or www.russomusic.com 1. Rent or Buy your own instruments for Flutes, Clarinets, Trumpet, Alto Saxophone, or any small instruments. 2. Larger Instrument s such as Trombone, Baritone Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Tuba, Bass-Clarinet will be provided to the students BUT only 1 instrument will be loaned to the student a 2 nd can be rented from any music company. 3. **Purchase Supplies for Instruments Based on your instrumental needs:(size 3 reeds and Cork Grease for Wood Wind instruments or Oils/ Grease for Brass Instruments). Percussionist: 1. Rent or Buy the Percussion Kit. (Includes, Snare/ Practice Pad and Xylophone) 2. Percussionists require purchasing following items to avoid transfer of Germs/ Pathogens between students. 3. 1-2 sets of Vic Firth SD1 GENERAL drum sticks 4. 1 set of Mallets Nylon tip for Marimba (Medium) 5. 1 Set of Rubber Mallets for Xylophone. 2. Rudiment Book: Price $7-15 based on instrument. 1. Sound Innovation for Concert Band for your students instrument- Percussionist order the Percussion and Mallet Combination Book Book 1 (7 th Grade) color is Blue Book 2 (8 th Grade) color is Red You can purchase these items online at Amazon.com, Ebay.com, or any online music store. You can also physically purchase the book at Russo Music In Hamilton. The Music Shop, or Sam Ash. *** Rented Instruments from Russo s and The Music Shop Comes with the Rudiment Book free. 3. Should there be a desire on the part of the parent/guardian to prevent a child s involvement in any program, it is important that this be communicated to the teacher in advance. A request to NOT have your child video taped may necessitate exclusion from a performance. Please let the teacher know if this is the case. Otherwise, indicate your authorization below, sign and return to your child s teacher.
