Teens will have a kick-off movie event, Doctor Who, on Friday evening, May 30, after the library is closed. Then the Children s kick-off will be on Saturday morning, May 31, and the Adult kick-off event, a presentation about synchronous fireflies and an exhibit about firefly- and butterfly-friendly gardens, will be Saturday afternoon at 2 p.m. Throughout June and July there will be multiple events, activities, and fun and, of course, lots of reading! Nichols will discuss many of the species of fireflies that occur in Great Smoky Mountains National Park, as well as in surrounding areas. She will cover their ecology and behavior as well as how to identify different species based on flash patterns. Of course, the main discussion will be regarding the synchronous firefly and how it became so famous. The program will be in the Sharon Lawson Room. Monday, June 16, 7 p.m., History of the Gallup Poll: the Inside Story will be presented by Alison Gallup, daughter of George Gallup, III, and granddaughter of George Gallup, Jr. Gallup, Jr., developed the survey methodology for the opinion poll, and Gallup, III, ran the Gallup Poll surveys as a business for many years, even continuing to serve as Chairman for nearly two decades after he sold the business. Alison will discuss the history of the poll, its significance in politics and other studies and the impact on citizens. She will also talk about her family and share anecdotes of life as the daughter/granddaughter of the George Gallups, Jr. and Sr. The presentation will be in the Sharon Lawson Room of the library. Microsoft Computer Courses: Blount County Adult Education teachers offer computer courses at the Blount County Public Library. All Microsoft multi-session courses offered at the library will have a fee of $25 per course or $40 for some evening courses. These courses are offered during the year: Welcome to the World of Computers, Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Publisher. Classes meet in the Computer Lab.
