Iowa Bandmasters Association Conference 207 These are some books that I really use a lot and that I think offer great opportunities for learning musical style and technique. For the young student, late elementary to early middle school: 50 Saxophone Rambles by Leon Lester This book is GREAT for teaching beginning adults that have reached a level II. It's so much more interesting that the mediocre songs in the method books. Each piece offers the opportunity for dynamic difference, alternate fingerings, musical instruction in style, breathing, and all pieces have an interesting melodic line. Kids love it, makes them feel like they're finally out of the method book! Love this book? 27 Rhythmic and Melodious Studies by J L Small Great book for middle school, early high school. Difficult pieces for sure with lots of opportunities to teach alternate fingerings, style, keys, and musical line. Lots of technical challenges. I use this book a lot! 48 Ferling Etudes, edited by Ronald Caravan (Ethos) Offers a fast and slow etude in every major and minor key. Caravan has edited the music for phrasing and breath control. Well explained instruction for ornamentation included. This book is for high school students, advanced adults. The Saxophonists Workbook by Larry Teal I have my beginners buy this book and it takes them through college. Lots of fixes for many problems, explains alternate fingerings and where and why to use them, articulation instruction, palm key exercises, many scales and chords. GREAT BOOK!
