Essential Question: How do we find central idea? Questions: What is a social commentary? What contributes to finding the central idea? Notes: Summary: (Answer the essential question and summarize the notes)

Social Commentary Social commentary is the act of using rhetorical strategies to provide commentary on issues in a society. This is often done with the idea of implementing or promoting change by informing the general populace about a given problem and appealing to people's sense of justice.

Where do we see this? Social commentary is done EVERYWHERE. Ads, articles, movies, books, short stories, poems, etc! It s where someone uses art or print to get their point across. In fiction, it s a little more subtle. Authors use characters, mood, tone, figurative language, and events to make this point. This is why we need to talk about central idea!

How is the central idea developed? The central idea is the point the author is trying to make. For a social commentary, this point will be about what the author wants to see change or a problem they see within society! What was the central idea of Address to Congress on Women s Suffrage?

How is the central idea developed? The writer develops the central idea through supporting details. These supporting details are anything that proves the central idea!! For example, when we read Address to Congress on Women s Suffrage, what were some of the details she used to support her idea that women s suffrage was inevitable?

How is the central idea developed? Another important thing to pay attention to when looking for central idea is mood and tone. Remember!!! Mood is how we feel while we re reading. Tone is the attitude the author takes toward the subject.

Background information on The Jungle The Jungle was written in 1906. It was written by Upton Sinclair who was a writer and political activist at the time. He was considered a muckraker aka someone that exposed corruption within business and government. Muckrakers were known to stir things up in a desire to make things just or fair in the world.

Background information on The Jungle(Part 2) Between 1877-1900, there were about 7,348,000 people who immigrated to the United States in hopes of new and better opportunities. Many of these families were from Germany, Ireland, Scandinavia, and Eastern Europe.

The Jungle is about Ona and Jurgis Rudkus, a couple who just got married from Lithuania. We are started in chapter 14, and up until this point, Jurgis and Ona have faced many hardships, including struggling to find work and going into deep debt trying to find a place to live. They also have a child, Antanas, who they are struggling to support through his illnesses. Where we pick up, Jurgis is working at a meatpacking factory and Ona is working at a sewing factory. They are both struggling to pay their bills and support their son.

Bell Ringer Find all 10 errors! Correct them. Do you know the name Gertrude Ederle. Born in new York City, Ederle won three swimming medals at the olympic Games in 1924. However, her bigest fame came two years later. On August 6 1926, Ederle became the first women to swim across the English Channel. She broke the mens record for that swim by two hours! The English Channel is the body of water that separates the countrys of england and france.

SNAP READ We re going to snap read and stop and write as we read. Split a sheet of paper with your neighbor because as we read, I will be pausing to ask you questions. These will be graded!

Turn and talk Don t write this one. What have we learned in paragraph one?(topic introduced) How do you feel as you read this paragraph?(mood) What type of figurative language is being used and why?

Stop and Write 1 1. Make a prediction about what Upton Sinclair is criticizing. Give me a piece of evidence from the text to support your answer.

Stop and Write 2+3 2. Look at all the detail in these first paragraphs. Why does the author include this much detail? 3. What is his attitude toward these factories? (tone)

To close What is a social commentary? What did you learn about central idea? What injustice has Upton Sinclair begun to point out in this text?

Review What is social commentary? Where do we see this? What did we read yesterday?

Turn and talk In this paragraph, the author begins to describe the main characters: Elzbieta, Jurgis and Ona. How would you feel if you were in their shoes?

Stop and Write 1. Sinclair is using metaphors in this paragraph to develop his central idea. What metaphors are being used and how do they shift the mood of the text?

Stop and Write 2. What types of figurative language are being used here to develop the central idea? Why would Sinclair include these?

Stop and Write 3. Why does Sinclair begin with descriptions of the factory first? Why does he then move into their lives at home? How does this make the reader feel?

To Close: What has Sinclair mainly used so far to make his social commentary? Why? Think about this: Why write a fictional story about this instead of an exposé that is nonfiction?
