1 Summer Reading Assignment 2016 Advanced English 12 Read the novel 1984 by George Orwell. While reading, complete the Major Works Data Sheet provided using the guidelines below. 1. For Biographical, Historical, and Genre information, you may use Internet sources. However, for sources you use to find information, you must cite them in the correct MLA format. If you write in the web address, you will lose points; this is not correctly citing a source. For help, The Owl Purdue ( a. Use only credible sources (edu, gov, org). Do not use Wikipedia, Sparknotes, Pink Monkey, etc. b. Do not use direct quotes; summarize or paraphrase information. 2. For Plot Summary, make sure you include summary for each of the twelve chapters. 3. Describing the Author s Style- Discuss the style of the author and give quotes from the text for support. Use the elements below as a guide. a. Syntax- Sentence structure -short, long, choppy, complex? b. Word choice: does the author use simple words or long, formal ones? c. Tone: what sort of feeling do you have about the writing? Is it loose and casual, formal and proper, or something different? d. Dialogue: do the characters speak in slang or dialect? Does their language seem realistic and believable? e. Sensory details: does the author use words that appeal to your five senses? f. Figurative language: does the author use words to paint pictures? are similes and metaphors an important part of the author's style? 4. Memorable Quotations- As you are reading, mark quotes that are important to the characterization, plot, tone, theme, etc. Write down the quote, page number, and discuss the significance of the quote in its context in the novel (2-3 sentences per quote). 5. Characters- Fill in each part of the characterization graphic organizer. Discuss the character s role in the plot, the significance of the character, and list at least three adjectives describing the character. 6. Setting- Describe in detail each setting, its importance, and its role in the plot. 7. Significance of Opening and Closing Scene(s)- How does the novel begin and end and what is the importance of the scene in the context of the entire novel? 8. Symbols- Discuss each of the three symbols, what they represent, and their importance to the theme or plot of the novel. 9. Possible Themes- Identify at least five possible themes for the novel as a whole. Then, in one sentence tell how it is a theme. [RL ]- Determine two or more themes or central ideas of a text and analyze their development over the course of the text, including how they interact and build on one another to produce a complex account; provide an objective summary of the text. [RI ]- Read and comprehend literary nonfiction at the high end of the Grades 11-College and Career Readiness (CCR) text complexity band independently and proficiently. [RI ]- Analyze a complex set of ideas or sequence of events and explain how specific individuals, ideas, or events interact and develop over the course of the text.
