2 From the editor... Giovanni Pierluigi da Palestra is the acknoledged master of the sixteenthcentury sacred polyphonic style, and his music represents the epitome of the classic Renaissance ideals of restrat, concordance, and alance. Palestra orked most of his life Rome, and the maority of his orks ere composed as service music for the Roman Catholic Church. Revered his lifetime, his music has ecome the asis for many texts on sixteenthcentury counterpot the 400+ years sce his death. This settg of Salve Rega first appeared a collection of motets (Motectorum lier secundus) pulished Venice 1584. The ases for this edition are several collections of collected orks that clude this motet. For this edition the origal mensuration sign has een changed from C to c, the note values have een halved and arles and a tempo suggestion have een ded. It should e noted as ell that the pitch has een raised a mor third from the source materials. Suggested accidentals are dicated y parentheses ( ) over no the score. The prospective performer ill notice a lack of dynamic markgs this score. Rather than clutter the score, the editor ould like to suggest that hen performg this ork the conductor rememer those Renaissance ideals of restrat and alance, and ork ith a suggested dynamic range of piano to mezzo forte. Understated shapg of phrases and a sutle emphasis on entrances and repeated pots of imitation ill also mata clarity of texture hile allog the listener to recognize the structural signposts of this motet. ne fal remark concerng appropriate choral tone: the presentday concept of straight tone ould seem to have little asis fact. While extensive virato ould fact muddy the texture of this music and make it untelligile to the listener, a udicious amount ill impart a vocal armth that ill enhance the overall effect of the music. Ray Sprague Translation: Hail Queen, thou mother of mercy; our life, our seetness, and our hope, hail. To you e cry, e anished sons of Eve. To you e sigh, groang and eepg this valley of tears. We therefore implore you, vocate of ours, to turn those eyes of mercy toards us. And after this exile sho us esus, the lessed fruit of your om. mild, dutiful, seet Virg Mary. 15/1853R2
