THE COMOSER Brad Ciechomski (b959) is currently the Director o Bands at Harrison Middle School in Yarmouth, Maine here he as the 005 006 teacher o the year and is one o 5 teachers in the SA to receive the 008 American Star o Teaching In Yarmouth, he conducts our concert bands and three azz bands Brad received his bachelor s and master s degrees rom the niversity o Ne Hampshire here he studied composition ith Andre Boysen, r Brad has received commissions by bands at every level, middle school through college, as ell as having his compositions shocased at MENC s national convention His Kos concert band publications include Microburst and Three Moods or Concert Band His azz band publications include Crusin the Back Bay, The Kicker, and Sotly Aside rom composing and teaching, Brad is active in Ne England as a clinician, adudicator and guest conductor as district and state music estivals and competitions A busy perormer, Brad keeps a ull schedule as a reelance drummer ith local, regional and national artists in the greater Ne England area Brad has appeared on stage ith azz greats such as Clark Terry, Slide Hampton, Bobby She, The Sammy Kaye Orchestra, Mel Torme, Bob Mintzer, The Ne York Voices, Wayne Bergeron, and Conrad Herig ust to name a e He has even rocked out ith David Crosby o Crosby, Stills and Nash! Brad lives in ortland, Maine ith his bass-playing ie and to onderul daughters THE COMOSITION In speaking ith the conductor o the Southern Maine unior Music Academy Band, e discussed certain criteria he ished or in this piece: exciting to play, up-beat, interesting parts or all players, lots o percussion, etc Instead o the oten-used minor keys, I decided to have the main theme in Eb Maor ith the opening eliciting a sense o celebration (it as or the 5th anniversary o the camp) I spent time thinking about music camps and ho they impact students (and teachers ) lives; hat it means to have students rom many communities and varied musical backgrounds coming together to ork, experience and perorm music in a eek (sometimes to) Music camps happen throughout the country each summer and share these common traits This concept o coming together rames the piece: themes coming together individually and then ultimately as one, as does the inal perormance The perpetuating rhythm present throughout the piece, represents the band camp experience; vibrant and consistent When I have taught at music camps, I have observed students arriving ith excitement, nervousness, and onder about hat ne experiences aait them The opening measures signiy the arrival o students ith this sense o eagerness Three themes are played (trumpet-meas, clarinet-meas 55, and lo brass-meas 96) representing the reunion o riends as ell as beginning o ne riendships As the piece heads to the conclusion, all layers are played simultaneously, simulating this temporary community o musicians coming together or the camp s concluding perormance The inal chord o the piece is olloed by the perpetuating rhythm as the clarinets ade into the distance This ending evokes the thought that although the music camp may have ended, the memories and experiences o the eek live on indeinitely I hope that your students are able to attend music camps and ill relate their on eelings and experiences to this piece Having students share their on camp experiences ill make a deeper connection to the music Enoy, Brad Ciechomski
