INSPIRATION JONATHAN ZAWADA / TIPS FROM OUR LYRICAL MASTER Jonathan Zawada has been with The Presets from the beginning. With a 15 year partnership spanning 4 studio albums he has shaped the bands visual aesthetic like no one else. We asked the man himself about his process so you can become a Lyrical Master just like him. 1. Choose a lyric that appeals to you There are heaps of lyrics within Tools Down. The first step for me was to pick a lyric that appealed to me and I felt would be interesting to bring to life. Picking the right lyric is important. If it gives you a smile when you read it or an idea pops into your head straight away, it s probably the right one for you so go forth! 2. Start on paper I don t always start with a pen and paper but it s the quickest way of thinking about form and composition without feeling like you have to work them up too much. Sketch, sketch and sketch again. Iterate on your ideas until a form starts to take shape. 3. Think about the lyrical intent Have some fun with what the words are saying and have some fun with this in the form of your design. Thinking about them in isolation can often be helpful in finding a unique approach as often it can be a little hard to see the trees for the forest when you re looking at an entire song. For example, for my interpretation of Tools Down, I thought about literal tools with a thought of them laying in the environment as if being placed to the ground. Once my mind was in that space I starting thinking about that idea in the abstract and just started evolving from there. 4. Choose your tools wisely We re all more competent at different software. For me, I often scan or photograph my sketches and start working them up in vector format in Adobe Illustrator. I ll iterate again on screen, constantly perfecting the form factor, refining geometry and exploring colour. I then take the design into Photoshop to add further shading and textures to give my design another dimension, detail and subtlety. 5. Get everything you need Of course, starting from a blank canvas can always be daunting so to kick-start your creativity and to get you on your way to becoming a Lyrical Master, my friends at Adobe have pulled together a little starter pack. Inside you ll find some handy backgrounds and assets to get you going. Download the starter kit
