Library News It s National Library Week Volume 4, Issue 4 April 2016 In the mid-1950s, research showed that Americans were spending less on books and more on radios, televisions and musical instruments. Concerned that the nation was reading less, the American Library Association (ALA) and the American Book Publishers formed a nonprofit citizens organization called the National Book Committee in 1954. The committee s goals were ambitious. They ranged from encouraging people to read in their increasing leisure time to improving incomes and health and developing strong and happy family life. In 1957, the committee developed a plan for National Library Week based on the idea that once people were motivated to read, they would support and use libraries. With the cooperation of ALA and with help from the Advertising Council, the first National Library Week was observed in 1958 with the theme Wake Up and Read! National Library Week was observed again in 1959, and the ALA Council voted to continue the annual celebration. When the National Book Committee disbanded in 1974, ALA assumed full sponsorship. American Library Association (03/19/2016), National Library Week, History This year National Library Week is April 10th through the 16th. The Mountain Home Library will mark the occasion with Snapshot Day on Wednesday, April 13th. Page 2 Library News News from the Front Desk The Winter Adult Reading Program came to an end with a total circulation of 182 items. Well done everyone! Our congratulations go to the winners of the WARP prizes, Judy Little ($25.00 Walmart Gift Card), Pamela Jackson ($25.00 Walmart Gift Card), Dan Page (Amazon Fire Tablet) and Nora Prentice (Amazon Fire Tablet). A big thank you goes to the Friends of the Library for making those prizes possible. Idaho Day was featured during the W.A.R.P. project and featured title Sign-Talker by James A. Thom. The work of fiction had been read and was discussed in an enjoyable hour long program at the Library on March 3rd, 2016. The Friends of the Mountain Home Public Library continue to offer used books for sale to benefit the Library. In addition to their quarterly sales events, patrons can find titles on many subjects such as fine art, quilting, gardening, health, and kids books on the Friends sale shelves every day. As donations come in, new items find their way to the sales area every week. We invite you to come browse the used book selections located by the Circulation Desk and support our Friends, who in turn support library programs and events throughout the year. Donations Welcomed The Library is now accepting used ereader and tablet donations. The tablets should be factory reset and in good or better condition. The devices will be made available for patrons to check-out. Thanks in advance for any donation! Individuals and corporations who contribute to libraries are eligible for tax savings! Volume 4, Issue 4 Page 3 D.E.A.R. Drop Everything and Read What is D.E.A.R.? D.E.A.R., Drop Everything and Read, a is national month-long celebration of reading designed to remind folks of all ages to make reading a priority activity in their lives, because really, what s more fun-damental than reading? When is D.E.A.R. celebrated? D.E.A.R. programs have been held nationwide on April 12th in honor of author Beverly Cleary s birthday since she first wrote about D.E.A.R. in Ramona Quimby, Age 8 (pages 40-41). Inspired by letters from readers sharing their enthusiasm for the D.E.A.R. activities implemented in their schools, Mrs. Cleary decided to give the same experience to Ramona and her classmates. As D.E.A.R. has grown in popularity and scope, the program has expanded to span the entire month of April... offering classrooms and communities additional time to celebrate! Can D.E.A.R. be celebrated anytime? Yes, of course! We encourage you to Drop Everything and Read every day throughout the year. The goal of the program is to prompt people to make reading a regular part of their routine, whether they re reading solo or together with classmates, parents, friends or in reading clubs. So, go ahead and join the millions of families, schools, bookstores, and communities who have participated throughout the years and pledge to drop what you re doing and grab a good book. How can I participate? Just Drop Everything and come to the Library s celebration on April 13 from 10:30 a.m. to noon. Youth Services has arranged for a special Storytime presentation by guest reader, Mountain Home s Mayor, Rich Sykes. In Cleary s book, Ramona loves to decorate her last initial Q to look like a cat after Miss Binney showed her that her initial is "A nice round O with a little tail like a cat. We invite you to come decorate your initial to look like an animal by turning a G into a giraffe, an A to an alligator or an S to a Snake using some crafty tools. Additionally, we are challenging everyone to read for 100 minutes to mark Cleary s 100th birthday! Reading charts will be available and you will have until the end of April to complete 100 minutes of fun reading. Of course, great prizes will be given to those turning in completed charts!

Finalizing the selection of technology equipment has taken longer than we anticipated but, by the end of April that equipment should be on order! It will take some time to get everything installed and configured and we are planning to open Geared Up in May with programming to start in June. We are excited about our partnership with Parks & Recreation to offer the Mountain Home community a DIY Tech Center, featuring programs, instructors and great hardware! 790 North 10th East Mountain Home, Idaho 83647 208-587-4716 - Phone 208-587-6645 - Fax Whether you are dropping by to check out a good book, use the Internet, attend a program, or visit with friends in the Commons Coffee Bar area, the Mountain Home Library has a spot for you. We invite you to explore the Library to learn more about our resources and services. If you don t find what you are looking for, visit our Information Center in the Commons or give us a call and we will be glad to help. Coming Soon - a new Circulation System for the Library Mountain Home Public Library, a member of the LYNX! Consortium, is currently undergoing preparations to migrate to our new circulation system, Polaris. We are excited about updating to a new product and staff have been attending training sessions in anticipation of going live. The new system will provide better functionality and options for both Library staff and patrons. There are a couple of important dates and information that I wanted to pass along. May 18 th Last day to able to place holds or pay fines until after we are live. May 19 th thru 24 th Systems are down for migration to new circulation system. The Library will only be able to checkout and register new patrons. We will be unable to process fines, holds or interlibrary loans during the migration period. You can still use the Catalog to search for materials. May 25 th The new circulation system, Polaris, will be live! No items will be due May 19 th thru June 1 st and no fines will be charged. If you use the My List feature inside the Catalog, be sure to print a copy because it WILL NOT transfer over to the new system. There are a lot of changes coming with this new circulation system and with that comes some headaches. We envision there will be limited impact to you during this time but it may take a bit of adjustment to work out any kinks that weren t found during the current training phase. We will be releasing new features over the next few weeks as part of this upgrade. It is an exciting time for our Library and the LYNX! Consortium. Please let any of the staff know if you have any questions. Sincerely, William Lamb Circulation Specialist

Easter Egg Hunt Extravaganza! The Mountain Home Public Library hosted its Second Annual Easter Egg Hunt on Friday, March 25 th. There were a whopping 120 patrons that came by the Library to enjoy the festivities and kids searched through the Youth Services Department with baskets in hand. A story, craft & drawing followed for 19 stuffed animals and 12 books. We would like to thank the Friends of the Library, the Idaho Commission for Libraries, Pete Humm and Bonnie Sharp for their sponsorship of the project.

The Mountain Home Library s celebration for Teen Tech Week was held on March 31. We had over 60 participants that represented a wide age range. Gaming stations using the Xbox360, Wii and Playstation 3 filled the area in Youth Services. The Library s new Geared Up Tech Center housed the Makey Makeys, Edisons robots, Circuit blocks, Spheros and old computers to take apart. This all day event had some participants honing in on one component with others sampling the whole set up. We had our 3D printer in action making Chess pieces. We will be planning more opportunities to play and explore these resources in the coming months. Check our website or Like us on Facebook to find out when!
