MUSICAL THEATRE AT PALM TREE STUDIOS Nate Butler s Studio in association with Canberra Academy of Dramatic Art (RTO 40859) is pleased to present a range of programs of study in Musical Theatre. Why Study Musical Theatre? Musical theatre is a passion-driven pursuit. Singing, dance and acting all enrich our lives as human beings, both as spectators and performers. For some, participation in musical theatre is a personal pleasure, for others, it becomes a lifestyle through regular involvement in local theatre, while for others it becomes a career which takes them to all corners of the earth. Musical theatre training can be a pathway to work in a range of employment contexts, which may include job roles such as: Actor Vocalist Dancer Cabaret performer Theatre producing and management Performance artist Arts administration More than this, creative thinking skills, the ability to stand up and present in front of others confidently, and the ability to solve problems and think theatrically, all have broad application in other fields of endeavour. Your Study Options At Palm Tree Studios we offer a foundations course (CUA40513 Certificate IV in Musical Theatre) and an extension program (CUA50213 Diploma of Musical Theatre). If you love singing, dancing and acting, and want to develop your skills in a disciplined manner within a warm and friendly artistic community, Palm Tree Studios could be the place for you. In this day and age, we understand that flexible study options are needed to work in with modern lifestyles. You can now study musical theatre full-time, for only 3 days a week. This allows you to be able to work while you study. Full-Time Studies One-Year Full-time Courses 3 days per week, 9am-5pm, Over one year in term time CUA40513 Certificate IV in Musical Theatre (Wed Fri) CUA50213 Diploma of Musical Theatre (Mon Wed) Students wishing to do both courses this will complete over a two-year period in term time. Students who complete the full two-year program will be able to demonstrate a high level of skill as musical theatre performers.

Course dates for 2019 Semester 1 Term 1: Mon 7 th Jan Fri 15 th March (10 teaching weeks) Term 2: Mon 1 st April Fri 10 th May (6 teaching weeks) Mon 13 th May Fri 14 th June (5 production weeks) Semester 2 Term 3: Mon 8 th July Fri 17 th Sept (10 teaching weeks) Term 4: Mon 30 th Sept Fri 8 th Nov (6 teaching weeks) Mon 11 th Nov Sat 14 th Dec (5 production weeks) Training Venue NSW-based students train at our studio at 457 Pacific Highway, Wyoming, 2250, NSW What You Study Palm Tree Studios musical theatre programs take an integrated approach to training in dance, acting and singing. Singing Palm Tree Studios training in vocal development includes ensemble work, masterclass, and individual tutoring. All students have a weekly individual singing lesson with one of our highly skilled tutors, to support the core work of the course. In your private lesson you will work on vocal strength, correction, and personal performance pieces for other classes. A variety of musical forms and approaches to voice work are explored in this subject. Acting In this subject you will be introduced to a range of acting techniques and their proponents, including Konstantin Stanislavski, Sanford Meisner, Viola Spolin and others. Training is rigorous and challenging and involves specialist exercises on specific techniques, right through to work on monologues, scenes and larger-scale performances. Through script work, improvisation, and play, you will be equipped to create memorable, believable characters. You will also undertake training in screen acting, to maximise your employment opportunities as a performer. Dance & Movement In dance and movement classes you will develop and refine your existing dance skills by working towards performances. Dance styles explored include ballet, jazz, and associated Broadway dance techniques. Fitness is an important part of this subject; you will also receive advice and training on maintaining your physique. Another significant component in Movement Studies is Palm Tree Studios special emphasis on movement for the actor, recognising the significance of non-dance movement in the performer s repertoire. Musical Theatre Production Throughout your training you will undertake a range of musical and theatrical performances, including solo performances, cabaret nights, and works from more traditional music theatre. Musical productions and works that we use in performance will be tailored to the particular student group in any given year. You will learn to integrate acting, vocal and dance technique in traditional and nontraditional musical theatre contexts, as well as devise your own work for performance if you continue to Diploma level. Industry Skills So you have the performance skills but how do you get into the industry? In industry classes you

will develop an understanding of the life of the professional performer. In the Certificate IV you learn how to engage in professional dialogue and how to audition for and acquire roles in a competitive environment, while at Diploma level you move into more depth: how to establish your own business as a freelancer, how to promote yourself, how to build networks and assess and manage employment contracts.
