Editor s Note The great Austrian cooser Franz Schubert was born in Vienna, where he began his musical education by studying the violin, piano, organ, singing and theory. He eventually became a member o the Court Chapel Cir and also studied music at the Stadkonvict, a training scol or court singers. Ater leaving that scol, he continued to study music with the esteemed Antonio Salieri and spent a ew years as an elementary scol teacher. With many works written and numerous contacts made with other musicians in Vienna, he ultimately spent the rest o his lie coosing music. Like Mozart, he lacked a secure patronage and a steady income. wever, Schubert coosed an incredible amount o music in his brie lie o only 31 years. Included in Schubert s works are nine synies, 22 piano sonatas, many srt piano pieces or two and our hands, 35 chamber works, six masses, 17 operas, and over 600 songs. This publication provides the Sanctus movement ound in Schubert s Mass No. 4 in C Major, D.452. It was one o our masses that he coosed in his youth or perormance in the Lichtental parish church, where Schubert had sung as a boy. The source o this edition is Franz Schubert s Werke, Series 13, published by Breitkop and Härtel in 1887. Originally coosed in 1816 or S.A.T.B. crus, S.A.T.B. solo voices and a small instrumental ensemble o Violin I and Violin II and continuo (cello, bass and organ), the mass was revised by Schubert in 1825 with the addition o ad libitum parts or oboes or clarinets, two truets and tiani or perormance in St. Ulrich Church in Vienna. Also in 1825, Schubert sold the mass to Anton Diabelli or publication. It was the only mass published during Schubert s lietime, and he dedicated that publication to Michael lzer, his teacher and the organist and cirmaster at the Lichtental Church. This arrangement o Sanctus includes a keyboard reduction o the instrumental parts rom Schubert s 1825 version as the accoaniment. Modern cles and the metronomic indications have also been added to this publication. Additionally, the dynamic indications provided here have been derived rom the original cral and instrumental parts by the editor. Intended by Schubert or use in the main worship service o the Roman Catlic Church, this tuneul crus is a rather concise statement o the Sanctus text. Because Schubert set this movement as part o a missa brevis (brie mass), ew instruments were eloyed and it was common or the voices to sing through the work witut pausing or the instruments to play alone. This exuberant Sanctus suld be perormed very energetically while ehasizing the normally stressed syllables o the Latin text. Tse syllables are underlined in the ollowing pronunciation guide.
